Rating: Summary: Real problems with XP Review: As reported by other reviewers, my 8500 worked well with Windows 98, but I've had nothing but problems making it work using a new computer with Windows XP. Most of the time neither the native printer driver on the installation CD nor the one downloaded from the Brother web site work. I never got the inbox XP driver to work. After numerous installation attempts, I gave up and am using an older, but much more reliable Canon inkjet. Unless Brother gets a trouble-free set of XP drivers out to users, they shouldn't advertise this product as XP-compatible.
Rating: Summary: No Support for 2003 Review: I am generally happy with the quality of printing, faxing, and copying, however scanning does not work. I run Windows Server 2003 and there simply are no drivers for it (nor, as far as I can tell, intention to create drivers).
Rating: Summary: Do not buy untill the software is updated Review: I am so happy with my Brother MFC8500. I've printed 250 page, two-sided, workbooks for classes I teach. They come out sharp, and fast. I've used the fax, the scanner, and the copier functions too. It is easy, reliable, and reasonably priced. What more could you want?

Rating: Summary: One year old now Review: I bought this after having trouble with paper feed on the HP5L and HP Laser multifunction. I am happy to report the paper feed works great on this unit! I found the 8500MFC to be easy to install, and have had no compatibility problems. The printing, copying and fax functions have worked flawlessly. I have a stand alone scanner so have not used the scan function. I like the way the unit is normally powered down in "sleep" mode, yet comes up quickly when needed. Unlike the HP model I got rid of, this unit delivers as promised.
Rating: Summary: prints gray background Review: I bought this less than 2 years ago. All of a sudden it has started printing a light gray background on all printed pages. I am using high yield toner cartridge and it is not showing toner as being low. I tried cleaning the toner/drum components with compressed air - it doesn't help. Has anyone experienced this?
Rating: Summary: Almost flawless performance ! Review: I bought this machine 2 months ago for my small business. We use it both as a fax machine and a laser printer. So far, it has handled just about any type of task we have thrown at it flawlessly. It handles hundreds of pages of "normal" size documents every day. We were especially impressed when we printed on hundreds of "odd" size envelopes with various thickness and had only four paper jams. (that's when we pushed it's limits)The machine is efficient and very fast. Print quality is adequate for text but only fair for photos. The availability of a high yield (6000 pages) ink cartridge is a plus. It is only slightly higher in price and it's capacity is unmatched by competitors. The only major fault with this machine is, all of it's functions can not be used with windows XP. Hopefully, Brother will update it's current XP software on line. Long term reliability is unknown. Good luck.
Rating: Summary: still working great without any problems Review: i bought this this multifunction center for my new medical practice...i've had it for seven months now with over 3000+ trouble-free pages thus far...i'm quite pleased with this product...well worth the money for home use or small business.
Rating: Summary: Do not buy untill the software is updated Review: I cannot scan. I called technical support and I was told that I need to reinstall window XP professional. The problem was not fixed. I am still under warranty and I do not knwo if brother will take the machine back. I can see from the other reviews that I am not the only one with software problem.
Rating: Summary: Fast, quiet, great price! Review: I have owned this printer about 2 months now, and could not be happier. It is silent when not in operation, warm-up is only 2-3 seconds, and a single sheet pops out in seconds. Have done print jobs as large as 300 pages or so, and the printer really does crank them at 10-12 pages/minute. Print quality is excellent. Mac OS 10.1 works great with the printer; kudos to Brother for staying up-to-date. Don't know about long-term durability, but seems solid enough. The Fax works fine. Can't go wrong at this price.
