Summary: I love this printer!
Review: I'm partial to Epson products anyway, but this is the fastest, highest-quality inkjet printer I've ever had. It's especially good for the price range.

I generally use a laser printer for my writing business, but I've purchased a few inkjet printers over the years because I need the color capability. This printer is faster than my HP LaserJet with more standard features (such as double-sided printing) and has a much cleaner text output than many other inkjets. You have to take a much closer look to know that it's not a laser printer. Using the color features and high-gloss paper, I created a complete marketing campaign for myself, and few people could tell that it wasn't professionally printed.

The C80 also seems to not eat as much ink as other models, with the added benefit of using separate ink cartridges for each color. It's also very quiet. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a good but inexpensive inkjet printer!

Summary: A great printer for the price
Review: I've had this printer for a little over a year, and I think it's great. The speed and print quality are very good for photos and documents - just as good as the very expensive HP inkjet printer I use at work. A couple of times I've had to clean the heads because of white or off-colored bands through a printing job, but it seems like I have had to do it a lot more often with other printers.

I don't believe that this printer uses more ink than others, and I believe that I've saved money on ink because each color is a separate cartridge. If you run out of blue, you only have to replace the blue instead of wasting all of the rest of the ink. Also, I appreciate that the ink dries very quickly so it doesn't smudge - a problem I've had with other printers in this humid climate.

I do think that the "double sided printing" function is a little cheesy, since it requires you to turn the paper over. But I can't say that the function hasn't come in handy. My only real complaint is that I wish the printer were a little smaller. I have limited space, and it does seem to take up quite a bit. Otherwise, I think it's a great printer for the price!

Summary: Run, run fast...
Review: Not only does this printer run through ink *way* too fast, it dies right around the time your warranty expires. My first one just stopped printing (well, it went through the motions, but produced a blank sheet of paper) just under a year after I bought it. Epson was familiar with the problem and walked me through all the possible fixes. They finally sent me a replacement, which died in just a few months -- but past the end of my warranty, of course. This was my first experience with Epson, and I'm not so sure I'll buy from them again.

Summary: Epson C80 Inkjet Printer
Review: I've had this printer for about six months now and there are a few things to know to get the best print. I mainly print on Epson Matte Paper-Heavyweight, if you like glossy prints I would suggest you get one of the Stylus Photo printers (Epson 785EPX) which has the six color cartridges. I've tried most all of the settings (and there are plenty) in the driver software and found that using 1440 dpi, high speed OFF, PhotoEnhance4 color management, and Vivid tone gives you an excellent print. It is my understanding that the black cartridge is not used when printing on glossy paper, which is why the prints appear washed out and dull. You can trick the driver into using black ink by selecting Matte-Heavyweight and you will get a much better print on glossy paper, however the black will smear easily. I print a small image six to eight times on a single sheet of paper using different settings and compare them to find what works best for a particular paper type.

The paper feed mechanism is loud but the printer is very quiet once the printing starts. The cartridges last reasonably well and can be replaced individually. The nozzles do clog if you let the printer set for long periods of time without using it, there is plenty of information on the Internet related to printhead/nozzle problems and how to avoid them.

The reason I gave this printer four stars instead of five is that it doesn't print on glossy paper as well as the Stylus Photo models and the first one I bought had a defective cyan cartridge, returned it for a replacement which believe it or not also had a defective cyan cartridge. I called Epson Support and they sent me a good cyan cartridge by UPS 2nd day air.

The Epson C80 prints beautiful photos, you just need to tweak the driver software, in fact Epson has perfected the inkjet printer to the to point that the quality is equal to or better than actual photographs. Now if they will just pay a little closer attention to quality control everything would be perfect.

Summary: Printer died right after warranty expired
Review: I have always been very happy with Epson Printers in the past. I like the print quality and the quiet printer. The Epson C80 I bought in February 2003 died in April 2004, just after warranty expired. I replaced yellow ink cartridge, it stopped printing yellow, a few days later I replaced the black TWICE and it stopped printing black. I am not interested in buying more expensive "disposable" hardware, and will switch to another manufacturer.

Summary: Lost trust in Epson
Review: This is my third Epson in the last 6 years. And it gives me the worst experience. First, I got the software problem. The printer just randomly stops during printing process (under win2k , USB) and not responding. Restart the printer doesn't solve the communication problem. I have to reboot the computer. I also tried to reinstall the driver. Still had same problem. Hooked it to a difference machine and installed the driver and the monitor software. It worked better. It didn't stop as often as before. But the problem still exist.

That's not the only problem. The mechanism on this printer is [stunk]. I got paper jam 2 out of 3 times I tried to print with big quantity (10-20 copies).

Changing the setting sometimes doesn't take affect. Sometimes it is set on black, but still printing out color

This printer is very quiet, one of the most quiet printer on the market. I had no complaint about the print quality coming out of this printer. These are the only 2 positives among zillions of negative.

I would NOT recommend this printer to anyone. Safe yourself time and headaches, go buy something else. I will look for different brand. To me, Epson was a good company that made high quality products. But that was history.

Summary: Still Makes the Grade...
Review: It had been time to supplement my 6-year-old Epson Stylus II, which still functions perfectly, and I wanted to be able to do decent photos at home. Spent months looking at the various "specialty" photo printers, including Epson's, but had bought a C80 for a client and was impressed with its general speed and solidity. Finally, an Epson rep at a computer store confided that the two extra colors in the photo printers weren't necessarily that meaningful, given the smaller ink droplets in the C80, and he had the prints to prove it. That, the separate ink cartridges for economy's sake, and figuring I could always return the product if dissatisfied, convinced me to order one. Must admit that some of the negative reviews ... did give me some pause.

In my experience, however, the C80 has been about all I'd hoped for the 3 weeks that I've had it. Text is very fast and extremely sharp (after the longer-than-used-to spooling period that many reviewers have mentioned), and the photos that I've printed I have been proud to give as gifts. This doesn't mean that I'm closing my Ofoto account, but for most ordinary purposes it more than fills the bill. Have not experienced the "dull" colors that several reviewers wrote about. Haven't done that much experimenting with different setting, since the Digital Photo option and Kodak Premium High Gloss paper have done so well for me, but it will be interesting to see if Epson papers (or Fuji, which has been strongly recommended to me) make any difference.

Summary: DO NOT BUY A C80
Review: Hands down, the worst printer I've had. Sure, when it works great, it's wonderful. Nice clear printing, fast, blah blah blah. My Epson c80 has been the most problem-filled printer I've ever owned. Goes through ink way too fast, smears pages, has required frequent cleaning with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol just so there aren't horizontal lines through my prints, plus it broke right after the warranty expired. However, the most annoying thing: it uses color cartridges for black printing. This means a) you cannot print in black if you are out of blue, yellow, or red, and b) you end up buying color cartridges even if you never print in color. Very poorly designed printer, I'll never buy another Epson product after my experience with the Epson C80 printer.

Summary: Frequent Trouble, Smearing, Expensive Ink
Review: I bought the C80 based on very favorable press reviews and regret it. When it wants to, it can print beautifully. But it often feeds more than one page, smears ink, and needs frequent nozzle cleaning/adjustment. It seems to eat ink, and the cartridges are more expensive than others (around 50 bucks for a set a couple of times each year). I'm switching back to HP.

Summary: This printer will cost you in the long run
Review: It may be inexpensive and work well to begin with but if you plan on using it for longer than a year beware! I waste most of the expen$ive ink cartridge$ on 'cleaning' and after about 1.5 yr of moderate use it's a hunk of garbage and will not print anything without horizontal stripes throughout the page. My epson 740 and 600 lasted much longer and produced better output despite being lower res. It seems that the quality of Epson printers is declining with each new model that appears. I am switching to an HP or Canon.
