Summary: seems great, but do not remove ink tanks you will still use
Review: I do not know if this product works well or not yet because i made an easy to make mistake. When you put in the ink cartrige, it pokes a whole in the plastic for you, but i wasn't sure, so I checked to see. BIG MISTAKE. Unlike the Cannon i have for my PC (this one is for my mac) once you remove the ink carteige, i is unusable, because it will leave big gaps in the printout. This is in the manual, but i didn't see it untill after I made the mistake. On a good note, it prints fast, and if you set aside the gaps made by the bad ink, it prints well. Another problem, however is that if the cartriges must remain in, they are not refillable, and it is expensive to replace the 3 color in one cartrige. If you own an iMac and need a cheap printer that you will not use much (so that the ink won't get expensive) then this is a good choice.

Summary: Re-review
Review: I gave this printer 3 stars before, because I couldn't get it to print well becasuse of ink tanks. Now that I got it to print after cleaning the cartriges many times (and usung up literally more than half of the ink in the tanks, probably around $15 worth of ink) I've gotten it to work, and it works well! It is a very fast printer, and very high quality. Un 1440x720 dpi on photo paper (5 sheets included) it cretes pictures that cannot be distinguished from photographs. it doesn't use up too much ink (but having the 3 colors in one cartrige makes it less efficien for people who use alot of one color, and if you refill the cartiges (which I don't know how you would do because if you remove the ink tanks they don't work untill you complete numerous cleanings) be careful, because using a wrong brand may void the warranty (check the epson website to be sure.) Other than that detail, the printer is great! other advantages are, it has 3 ports in the back (one for older macs, one for newer macs and one for PCs) so it can be used on more than one (type) of computers. And at this price, who could complain? Also check the Epson 740i. it is an identical printer with an iMac color case (blueberry, but the collor may be changed with a $15 case cover.) It costs $30 more, but last I checked it came with some extra software (I don't know if it's PC or mac or if they are still offering it) so you might want to check and see. If not, I don't see why you need to spend $30 or $45 more (depending on color) to get a matching printer (see, even an iMac user would say that)

note: for all fellow mac users, not all of the programs that come with it are mac compatible, only 2 of the 3, but that's ok, because the other 2 are enough

Summary: Undependable and lousy!
Review: I had an Epson 740 for 14 months, and it was a colossal waste of money! Numerous times this printer did not print on command. The alignment is poor, printing slightly sideways. The printing ink light would come on even though there was an ink cartridge with ink in the printer. The paper feed is poor. The printer is loud when printing. I can't count how many times it printed in red when all I wanted is black ink. I finally bought a Non-Epson printer, and it is FAR SUPERIOR to the Epson I had to live with for 14 unreliable months. Shall I go on?

Summary: Happy until ink runs out
Review: I have had my Epson 740 for about 6 months now. It seems to be fine except for a couple things. One is that is doesn't hold much paper. More importantly is the cost of the ink cartridges. They are about $20 for black and $26 for color. I'm on my third black and second color cartridge in 6 months. Beyond that, the printer quits working if either cartridge is out of ink. My color ink was out and the printer refused to print a paper that had no color. This was upsetting.

Summary: Huge disappointment
Review: I have had nothing but problems with my Epson 740. The printing quality is lousy, it frequently crashes my computer and support stinks. Don't waste your money.

Summary: Long lasting printer
Review: I have had the Epson Stylus Color 740 printer since 2000. It prints plane text documents quickly. Color photos on the highest setting (1440 X 740) take a little long to print, but the images come out very well, especially on photo paper.

The only things I dont like about this printer are:

1.It is a noisy printer. Most of the newer printers out now are much quieter.

2. Even though the printer seems to be popular the price for an individual ink cart. is a little high at around $35.00 for Epison brand ink.

Summary: Piece of junk
Review: I have had this printer for about 2 years, and have had headaches with it ever since. I cannot even describe what the problem is - when I turn it on (from time to time), it makes awful noise and all of the "trouble" lights turn on. This happens intermittently, and always at the worst possible time, but I am always unable to print indefinitely when it happens (until it magically decides to work again). Print heads clog easily and streak all over the page - I have rarely had decent print quality from this printer. I have been putting up with this piece of junk for far too long and after not being able to print at a crucial time today, have decided to give up and buy a new printer. I hate this printer.

Summary: EXCELLENT Choice for a color printer!
Review: I have owned the Epson 740 for about a year and have used it extensively for business and personal applications. From t-shirt transfers to 8 x 10 color photos which are virtually undistinguishable from those I receive from the photo lab, this printer does it all, and never misses a beat.

Summary: Epson 740, a good printer
Review: I have used the Epson 740 at my office since 1996. I use it for letters, and photographs for case presentations. I am now on my second 740, the first one wore out so I took the second one that I had at home to the office, and am still using it, constantly. It is important for an inkjet printer to be used regularly, for it to be reliable. Outside of the occasional head cleaning the 740 has worked flawlessly. Ink can be purchased inexpensively, and I would not hesitate to purchase one again.

Summary: sudden death
Review: I loved my Epson Stylus Color 740 and used it for about 2 yrs with no problems. A month ago it just outright died. But before it died it had been spreading red or black ink all over the documents I had been printing. Not all the time, but seemed to be if I used a lot o red or black at once. Contact with Epson was clean the print heads or "take it to a tech". I did that and it was one they recommended. The tech asked me why I would pay 99 dollars an hour when I could buy a new one cheaper. Cleaning did not work. I've been told their might be a color counter in some printers and when it comes to the end there is no fixing it.

I have been searching and searching for another 740 in a resonable price range and hope to find a new or refurbished one from a reputable source. I have not found one, only the new c40, c60 etc. which are compatible with comuters with usb and parellel while my mac performa has printer port and scsi.

I am totally dissalusioned with Epson for not standing behind their 740 which appears to be obsolete by 2 yrs. I think their color is superb. If they would change their design of the print heads or whatever we would most likely have no problem for many years. It appears to me that this 740's sudden death was meant to be. Just think of the new Epson printers that will be sold to take their place. I will think long and hard and investigate Epson's design of stylus color printers before I purchase one of their new ones... Jewel B
