Rating: Summary: Fine .. until it died Review: Epson definitely has the lead in photo-quality inkjet printers, and this model was easy to set up. After a year and a half -- conveniently out of warranty -- however, it suddenly up and died! Epson said it's a hardware problem, and the local Epson repair center said it'll easily cost as much to fix as to buy a whole new one; the motor's worn out. Now folks, I didn't use this printer a whole lot in those few months; I know these are cheap electronics, but this is a ridiculous, unacceptably poor level of quality. Further, the repair guy was so familiar with this problem he knew what it was before I'd barely described it, while Epson tech support pretended ignorance. Shabby, shabby, shabby.
Rating: Summary: Great color images for a low cost printer. Review: Great low cost printer for high resolution color images--far superior to HP. In black text, I find that I must increase the resolution or occasionally get 12 to 15 pt text that looks italicized (slanted) when it is not. At the higher resolution, the black text looks great.I've been very pleased with the feed mechanism and absences of jams, though the paper holder (slanted plastic) attaches somewhat flimsily to the unit. I found that I could print envelopes, though my user manual barely mentioned this feature and gave no instructions on how to do this. The user manual has some cautions which are disconcerting. For example, one must never turn the printer off while the power light is flashing unless the printer hasn't moved or made any noise for five minutes. Can you picture Epson owners watching their printers do nothing for five minutes so they can turn off the power? Apparently, the power light flashes while the print cartridges are being "charged." One is inclined to assume that if this charging is suddenly interrupted, all heck breaks loose. The booklet doesn't tell you what will happen or what you must do if this event occurs, such as in a power failure. Also, print cartridges are unusable once they are removed, even if they have ink in them. This would suggest that refilling cartridges is impossible. The ink cartridges are smaller than HP cartridges, though they are cheaper. The booklet advises that ink cartridges older than 6 months may be unusuable. I hope this is not the case as I stocked up at a recent sale. All in all, I like this printer much better than my HP855C, but I worry about what will happen if I accidently turn off the power while the power light is flashing. Yikes!
Rating: Summary: sudden death Review: I am on my second Stylus 740 and am very happy with performance and quality. In the Mac environment like mine, it performs extremely well with no service problems in four years. Some words of caution however...don't try to use bargain ink refill products. They don't work in this unit.

Rating: Summary: Great - Inexpensive Printer Review: I bought an EPSON 740 and absolutely love it. If you have the time, count the number of 5-star ratings this little beauty has recieved. Need I say more?
Rating: Summary: shame on you! epson Review: I bought the epson 740 thinking it was the best alternative to the imac computer, but after a few months it broke down. I used it for papers and It is not that I used it a lot, anyways the service at epson was very efficient they send me a new printer in a matter of days, but after a couple of months the new printer was dead I paid extra 50 dollars to have it repaired and just before a midterm paper print out it died on me again. Epson products are cheap and they die after the warranty expires SHAME ON YOU EPSON, SHAME ON YOU
Rating: Summary: I love it! Review: I bought this printer 12/99, from day 1 it misfed the paper but when I printed a picture, it blew me away! I took the picture to work with me to show everybody & I even showed the cab driver & he said "you must have an Epson Printer", only an Epson can print like that! I had it replaced it, because I was so impressed with the picture quality & the way my documents came out, I wanted the same printer. Now I have no problems whatsoever! I've been in wanting to buy a scanner & after throrough research, I insisted on an Epson & have not been disappointed! I made the right choice!
Rating: Summary: This is a horrid printer! Review: I bought this printer a couple years ago with an iMac. It initially worked fine, and I was quite happy with it. I guess for the time period when I bought it, that it was a high quality printer. But as the months wore on, it started being finicky with printing, sometimes not following commands. When I turned it on, it took about 5 minutes of deafening screeching sounds to prepare for printing, then printed very slowly. Black text was okay, but color was very bad. The only way to get a halfway decent print out of it was to put it on the highest quality mode of printing, which ATE ink. Furthermore, the color printouts were very grainy, and fuzzy at times. When I upgraded to a Gateway PC with Windows ME, I hooked up the printer to it, and it worked fine. Once. Then it just stopped printing! I reinstalled all the drives, got new ones from the epson website, emailed tech support, and nothing worked. Eventually I brought it, along with the computer, to the Gateway store to have them fix it. It came back and printed only one time. Afterward, it died again. It has been sitting dormant still hooked up to my computer, and once in awhile, just for the heck of it, I'll try to print something. It will make all the normal printing sounds, but still produce only a blank sheet of paper. Ink cartridges were very expensive..., so now I won't even consider getting a printer with the ink tanks in one cartridge. I've just ordered a Canon S520, with the individual ink tank system, and I suspect I'll be very pleased with it. Overall, this printer's life span is an embarrassment, and when it works, it's a waste of your money. Spend your money on something else, just not this printer.
Rating: Summary: Warning! Review: I bought this printer about a year ago. It worked fine for like 6 months then things started to go wrong. It uses a lot of ink, and ink cartridges are expensive. Finally at around 1 year old it died. It kept elling me there was no paper, and then when it finally took 1 piece of paper it jammed and didn't print. This is my warning to allof you, spend alittle more and buy an HP.
Rating: Summary: Good for the price Review: I bought this printer over a year ago. It is a good printer. One problem with it is that if you are ever going to print an image or important paper, and you don't want ink to line the sides of it, you will have to run the head cleaner, which uses up ink. This printer does print very good quality prints though, and is definitely worth buying for so cheap. It prints better quality images than any other printer I have seen so far. Also, when printing on normal quality is prints very fast, but high quality takes a long long time.
