Rating: Summary: Very pleased Review: I upgraded to the S600 from the BJC-6000, and am very glad I did. There is a noticeable improvement in the quality of images, and the speed is much faster. I recently purchased a Canon PowerShot S110 Digital Elph camera, and printing images from that even on plain paper is impressive. But, on photo paper, WOW! I'm sure there are better printers out there, but for me, the S600 does the job.
Rating: Summary: The Best Home Printer a Mac Owner can Have Review: I've been living with this little guy for 6 months, and I've been very happy with it. And, I bought it right here [...] for about $175 or so, and I didn't have to pay shipping. I shopped several online shops and they couldn't compare price-wise. The only thing I didn't like was that the contents of the box was in no way concealed, so you might want to keep that in mind if your UPS man has a habit of leaving stuff on your porch.About the printer itself, it's a gem. In the last six months I have used one black cartridge. You can run on the low ink warning it gives for a couple months before it runs out completely, or at least I did. Granted, I don't use the printer an awful lot. I've printed some wonderful greeting cards with non-Canon photo paper (the cheaper stuff they sell at Wal-Mart), but only while I'm in the learning stage. I have not fully tested what the S600 can do. I'll buy the best possible when I start making prints off my photoCDs. The color is surprisingly good, even at the text setting. (The printer has a text, graphic, photo, and manual setting.) I use text for "proofing" on plain paper, then switch to photo when using photo paper. The cartridges are really easy to change. I've found out I can get them at Wal-Mart cheaper than I can at Office Max or Office Depot. The printer is USB, so it's plug and play, and it doesn't seem to use much energy. I've printed envelopes with it, but here's a caveat. Inkjet ink doesn't stay like laser ink, especially when wet or sprinkled on! I've bought a can of fix to spray my mailing labels with. That seems to solve that problem. The printer cleans itself when you tell it to. Unfortunately, the software on the CD is not Mac friendly, so I couldn't try out their photo program. But that's a software issue, the drivers and the print monitor work fine on my iMac. It will print a page I've saved off the Internet even when I'm not online. It spools it to my hard drive. I don't know what else I could share, I'm very happy with Canon's products. My scanner is also a Canon. They've both been very reliable, considering I didn't pay that much for them. I didn't want to buy their photo printer, the S800, but I wanted something better than entry level that would last me. I think I made the right choice.
Rating: Summary: very satisfied with my purchase Review: i previously owned a lexmark 3200 color printer and decided it was time to upgrade to something nicer and more economical (in reference to the ink cartridges). i did lots of research and read many reviews about the canon s600. i read some that were sub-par and was worried it would give me problems. i purchased it anyway and immediately after installing it, i printed a large bitmap picture (nearly taking up a full sheet). the quality and speed were incredible!! it's also very smooth and quiet. i'm a college student and now i can print my papers at 3 a.m. when i finish and not worry about waking up my roommate because of a loud printer. i am extremely satisfied with this printer!! i can't believe the exceptionally good photo quality at such a low price. i have scanned photos and printed them on photo paper....my friends couldn't even tell the difference! and i love the separate ink cartridges!! with the lexmark i often had to replace the color cartridge b/c one color was empty but the other two were going strong. not so with this canon!! i highly recommend it to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Great for Printing Pictures Review: I installed and began using the s600 yesterday- and I am VERY impressed. The quality of the graphics is excellent. Setup was a breeze. Picture quality varied a lot based upon the paper setting- it is important you get this right- but it is easy to do so. Those that complain about the quality most likely have the wrong paper property in the settings. My wife wanted to use the printer to do scrapbooking- and our HP wasn't cutting it. The Canon will definitely fill the bill.
Rating: Summary: No Complaints, Excellent Product Review: I bought this model after returning the Canon S400 and I can honestly say it was one of the wisest decisions I've made. The S400 was pretty cheaply constucted and not very fast. I saw that this was a top rated model on CNET. The S600 is well constucted, it has a little weight to it and the paper tray flips up for convenience. And compared to the Lexmark I owned previous this is a real money saver on the ink refills. I have not been disappointed. It prints fast and the quality is very good. It is extremely easy to install and I like the software that Canon includes. All in all a very good printer for the price.
Rating: Summary: A very good printer Review: I think this is a very good printer overall. I am sharing the printer on a Windows 98 machine and two Windows 2000 computers are printing to it over a network. No problems at all. I am using this as a home office printer. Printing photo quality documents is not important to me. I print many technical documents though for my own use. So far, this printer has worked out great. I have been printing in "draft" format to save ink and it still comes out very dark. I set it to use even less ink than in draft mode and I am still happy with the text and graphic results. I did print out some photos at high res and plain copy paper just to see the results and my wife and I were impressed. I just printed a 186 page PDF on both sides and it worked without any problems. I printed the whole thing out even pages first, flipped them and printed out the odd pages. I thought it would choke but it handled it like a champ (my old HP could have never handled it). By the way, I am printing through the parallel port. Pros: Very easy to install. Easy to configure and use. Workes great on a network. Driver seems to work well both on win98 and win2000. Very good graphics even at low quality. Cons: Sort of noisy when preparing itself to print. Quite a large footprint on the desktop. Seems to use lots of ink by default but is user configurable. When refilling paper on empty, need to press a button to tell it paper has been refilled.
Rating: Summary: What a GREAT Printer!! Review: After scouring the internet for product reviews, comparisons, etc on photo quality printers, I saw the Canon S600 at Ritz camera while picking up some prints. After talking with the salesperson for about 20 minutes, and after assurances that I could return it if I was not satisfied, I decided to buy it. My old workhorse, the HP 660c was no longer adequate and I am mostly interested in printing photos from my Sony DS 30 camera. Out of the box the directions for set up were exactly as stated in the easy to understand poster style foldout. The software loaded as stated and I was up and printing in less than 20 minutes. After configuring the printhead and printing a test page, I printed an 8x10 copy of a sample photo that was included in the Canon software bundle. I used heavy glossy photo paper with the printer set to "High" quality print. Although the print speed was slow, the result was nothing short of astounding! I could not tell the difference between it and an actual photo. I have since printed shots from my digital camera and the results are equally as good. Needless to say, this printer will NOT be returned and I couldn't be more pleased with it.
Rating: Summary: Very Nice! Review: (. . .)out of the box it was fairly easy to unpack and set up. Quick setup instructions were exact. The driver installation was straight forward. The head calibration was straight forward. I would say that it took me around 20 minutes from opening the box to printing my first image. I am printing through my parallel port, not USB. I have not noticed any performance degradation yet. I am running an Intel 650 mhz (100 mhz FSB) with 512 meg RAM. As far as the printing goes.... On regular white paper, the image is very good, but the paper gets damp. On the photo paper, the image was very good and the paper was fine. I have not yet tried the thicker photo paper. I am printing images from a Kodak picture CD. 800k JPGs, resolution around 1200 x 960. I wouldn't say that the printed output is equivalent to the actual developed picture, but for my purposes it was close enough. And for this price, it's a good deal. There are only four cartridges for the S600. Magenta, Yellow, Cyan and Black. The Black is roughly twice the size of the other two. Overall, I would say that this printer is worth the (amount) that I paid.
Rating: Summary: Mixed review Review: OK first thing: I'm an HP bigot, so take this with that under consideration. The OOB (out of box) experience for the Canon S600 is only so so. 1st impression: "Dang this thing is big". It fills up the portion of the desk allocated to printing that previously had room for checkbooks, pens with the HP sitting there. 2nd impression: "Dang this thing is noisy". Not that noisy printing, but before it prints it does some sort-of internal tango to juice up the heads. In doing so, and after when it tidies up, it makes a lot of agonizing mechanical sounds. 3rd impression: "Dang this thing is fussy". Had to fiddle with the paper tray adjustment to keep it from jamming. (I have never had a paper jam with HP's in over 6 years of use with different printers). 4th impression: "Dang this driver is busy". Too many ways of tweaking the printed output and no duplex feature. Even my dumb old HP would print both sides by selecting this, following the instructions on the screen and feeding the paper back in for the 2nd pass. OK I only used this feature 3 times in 6 years, but still... 5th impression: "Dang this thing sucks power". MHz that is. When printing, the AMD 1gig it's attached to gets down right sluggish. 6th impression: "Is this thing going to hold up?" The Canon's claim to fame is their 4 separate tanks that are "less expensive". We'll see. The way they accomplish this is a reusable print head the tanks plug into. With the HP you throw out the printer heads each time you refresh the cartridge. Maybe this means the Canon print head is better made. Or maybe it means I'll have to spend a LOT more money replacing it when it comes time. Oh. The Canon prints just fine. About what you'd expect from today's printers for the price... 5 days later: Be sure to get a USB cable for this thing. I tried using my old parallel cable from the old printer and that was the cause of performance problems. You need a new cable if you get a new printer. And buy the cable from Amazon; Compusa will overcharge about 100%. I'm starting to adjust to the Canon, but I still think I would've been happier sticking with HP's products.
Rating: Summary: Great Bang for the Buck Review: I purchased this printer in October. It is dollar for dollar the best printer I have ever owned. Great photo quality and, despite other reviews I have read, perfectly acceptable text (even on plain paper)
