Summary: a terrific machine
Review: I've read all of the assessments below, and I must say that they don't reflect my experience. Then again, I'm using it with the Mac OS. I use it primarily for large format printing of musical scores, which are quite graphics intensive. I also now do a lot of photo printing. With music layout, it has performed brilliantly, producing copy that I find to equal that from professional houses. I've also found the photo production to be very fine, though at the best setting it will perform slower than some prefer. (This doesn't bother me.) There is also an occasional paper slippage when using glossy. (This does bother me, but hasn't occurred with enough frequency to damn the machine.) I've had no problems with the computer communicating with the machine.

All told, a terrific machine. I'd buy it again.

Summary: some good, some bad
Review: Pros: Great print quality, nice diagnostic tools (for Mac & PC), can print 11x17-size prints, stingy with ink. Post-Script compatable (Windows & Mac OS9).

Cons: Does not ship with a USB cable, frequently eats #10 envelopes, ink cartridges are ridiculously expensive, does not print as fast as other comparable printers, does not print well with HP glossy photo paper. W/respect to the last con, the rollers have a hard time "grabbing" the photo paper. I usually go through 5 sheets of photo paper with the photo 1/2 on it before one sheet that works. Then again, maybe that's part of HP's master plan to make $$$ on photo paper...

Summary: Great except for one key defect
Review: This printer prints beautifully. The tragic thing about this printer is that a few months after buying it, it won't turn on anymore. If you go to cnet or the HP website, you will find that many people have experienced this. Unfortunately it happened to us right after the warranty ran out, so we were stuck with it. Not a good thing for a product with this price tag...

Summary: Pathetic with photo paper, OK with everything else.
Review: This printer's plusses are that it can print 11 x 17, and it prints text at a fairly fast clip. The biggest minus is trying photo paper in this lemon. If it doesn't jam in the printer, it slips, meaning that 1/4 of your 8x 10 ends up off the page. You can imagine the cost of throwing out photo paper can be pretty expensive. I've never printed a successful photo with this thing.

This printer also has PostScript capabilities as well, which is a small plus if you prepare stuff for the print shop.

I have an HP PhotoSmart 1115 with the opposite problem - great with photo paper, horrible with office paper. I just don't think HP is getting it right.

Summary: Worst printer ever made.
Review: You do not want this printer. Paper pickup is unpredictable, color image is poor (even with new cartridges), and it occassionally just shuts OFF.
