Summary: Reliable machine
Review: After reading these reviews, I must say I have experienced none of the problems these people describe. It does not eat envelopes. It prints fast and well. Cartridges are expensive but I had it over a year before I needed one. I would still recommend it.

Summary: Great except for one key defect
Review: From the point of a 13 year old:

I was given this for Hanukkah. When it first came it did not work because there had been a error in the line. The error: The top did not put enough pressure on the printer so it always thought it was open unless you held it down while printing. We called the company and they said they would send a free replacement top because it was there error.
If you are like me this is what you want to see:

PROS:
Awesome Printing
So close to a photo printer (why spend the extra money?)
Can print up to 13x19 posters ( AWESOME )
Easy to install
And Evrything else about it except...

CON: (NOTICE ONLY ONE)
You have to send for the top.....unless you have got a newly released one and that would make the printer

CONLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH yeah HP is an excellent company to work with if there are any problems

Summary: An update on my previous review
Review: Frustration has driven me to write another review, this time based solely on the "special" features of this printer.

As I said before, it still works fine on the regular stuff - letters, e-mail, documents, even envelopes, other than the problem with having to press the "resume" button to print them. That's what the 2 star rating is about. If you look beyond the mundane - it's a ZERO star rating or less.

Printing anything out of the ordinary has become a major pain, which seems to be getting worse as the printer gets older.

Any paper that is even slightly glossy is now slipping on the rollers - not all the time, but enough to drive you mad, especially when you need to print something in a hurry. The printer also gets quite upset when you try to cancel the print, even when you use the button designed for this purpose.

The paper wastage is tremendous after a job is spoilt due to the slippage, because not only do you lose the special paper you put in, but also a ton of regular paper, as the machine continues to spew out reams of gibberish in protest. Having to reboot the machine to solve a print error is totally ridiculous. This is a recurring problem with HP printers in my experience.

If you do most of your printing on cardboard, glossy paper, transparencies or other special paper, think twice before buying this printer, as it can send you stark staring crazy in a very short time.

Summary: Good, but not bug-free
Review: I do a lot of color printing, and needed a printer that would stand up to pressure in the office. I bought this printer in spite of the bad reviews, because I didn't believe that HP would make a printer THAT bad and still have it on the market.

So far, it looks like HP has solved some of the bugs, as the printer worked fine straight out of the box. It is aesthetically pleasing, but takes up a lot of space. This is because it can print up to 13 inches x 19 inches, and has to be wide to accommodate the paper tray. Definitely not for your home if you're short on space.

It has some nice features, as it can print posters, shrink and enlarge documents, do mirror images, create banners, do tiling for bigger jobs, and print booklets. I had a small problem with the two-sided printing feature, because even though the manual says there should be easy-to-follow on-screen instructions, none come up on my system. (Win 2000) The manual is not very detailed, and you may have to go to the "Help" to find your way around the special features. The Grayscale and Sepia imaging options are useful in my line of work, and you can also optimize the contrasts for faxing and enhance your images with the tick of a box.

I had no problems printing on glossy paper, except that when printing color photographs on the "best" quality setting it is a bit slow. Documents in Word, Excel, and Publisher, and e-mail printed quickly with no problems. I had a problem (still unresolved) where pictures will no longer print through Microsoft Photo Editor, so I had to use alternative software.

You can load paper through three different places, and the one at the back comes in handy if you have to print a poster on cardboard and don't want it bent. However, this depends on whether you have clear access to the back of the printer, and would be difficult to use if your printer is against a wall. The alternative top media feed is very convenient when you just have one of two pages to print, and when you're using up "scrap" paper to print rough drafts. Something to note is that when you are using the top feed for large sheets of paper, you have to take out the paper in the bottom tray, because sometimes it also picks up the top sheet from the bottom tray, and prints it on top of your larger sheet.

Envelope printing has some bugs, because if you insert the envelope the way the diagram on the printer tray indicates, the address comes out upside down in Word, but correctly in Publisher. Also the printer sometimes doesn't register that an envelope is in the tray, and you have to press the "resume" button before it accepts the envelope. Same thing for labels.

Overall it's a good printer if you are just doing straight-forward documents, but slightly less good if you want to get creative with the features.

Summary: I WANT TO THROW IT OUT OF THE WINDOW !
Review: I do a lot of printing. I can no longer work with photo paper or thick paper, because I get to upset with this printer. I have turned down a lot of work , so this printer has made me lose money.
HP GIVE EVERYONE A REFUND THAT ASK, AND I'M ASKING.
DO NOT BUY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PULL YOUR HAIR OUT.

Summary: Real Disappointment.
Review: I've had color printers since they first came out..... I've worked in IT Out Sourcing since the mid 70's and have worked with, used, set up and trouble shot thousands of printers of every make, brand and price range.... For many years, HP has been a great maker of printers... not always the best price, out always the most features, and not always the highest resolution... but a printer that did a great job, was dependable and had a great company willing to help you out with any problem..... When I brought this 1220C, I found out how far HP has come down in the printer world. The electronics for the cartridges misfires, a call to HP gets you a guy in India, that wants $25 to talk to you...(like talking is going to help bad wiring)... Oh,,, you've had this for 60 days... not our problem ! Back to Epson for me....
