Summary: Disappointing user
Review: I owned three HP products including printer and scanner. And this one is the most disappointing product that I have. The feeder just does not work properly. Now I know what the problem is and I am going to buy a new one - not a HP this time.

Summary: not windows xp ready!
Review: I received this gift for Christmas and have enjoyed it ...However, please keep in mind that the drivers and software are NOT windows XP compatible. You can still utilize the front panel of the v40 to operate it but the full HP software is not available yet. If you are expecting ease of use when connected to your xp based PC ...well...it is not happening!

Summary: Good buy for the money
Review: I run a small office from home. I needed a device that could print, fax, scan and copy documents. HP V40 does the job. It only took me a little over 30 minutes to hook it up and get it running. Everything was automatic and easy. It is a great device for anyone who wants value for their money.

Summary: better then I thought
Review: I thought I couldn't go wrong with this product for only [$$$'s], but it's better then I expected. Since it isn't a flatbed scanner, you have to send single pages through (can't copy a page from a book). Besides that, the color copying and printing looks great, and all the fax functions are working fine.
I have Windows 2000, and my computer crashed (blue screen) half way through set-up. I rebooted, uninstalled / reinstalled the software, and now everything works great.
I still don't see anything on the market at this price that beats it.

Summary: Works great for one year!
Review: I used this machine to copy and fax. I thought it worked great, until.... I got the infamous "Carriage Jam" that has rendered it useless after just over a year - and out of warranty! If you think buying a new machine every year is reasonable, then I recommend this product. If it burns you to see your hard-earned money go into the garbage, then I would say buy something different. Google it and you'll see that hundreds of people have had this same problem.
I hope this helps!

Summary: Set Up Issues
Review: I was excited to receive my HP v40, but unfortunately spent hours trying to get it set up. I constantly had problems with the "Align Print Cartridge" message on the LCD that would not disappear. Unfortunately, the HP Help Center was closed (at 8pm EST) when I started my setup around 10pm - and I was up past midnight trying to resolve the set up difficulty myself to no avail. As it turned out, after making a couple calls to Technical Support at my expense the next day, it was determined that I had a defective print cartridge. You would think that by now, HP would have enough experience that a set up message would indicate such a problem. But instead, during my setup I received a message that said my computer might not meet the minimum requirements - which turned out to be incorrect and almost caused me to send the unit back.

Anyway, I needed to pick up a color cartridge which took me another hour of time and a cost of [money]. Although I apparently will receive a color replacement cartridge, and the HP v40 now works, this doesn't make up for the inconvenience I went through. And, there are some other issues.

The cartridges seem to be on the expensive side with the black cartridge selling at [money], for a total ink replacement of [money]. The USB caable is not included which is an added cost and may require an extra trip - and this is the only way you can hook up this device. It doesn't take parrallel or serial cables. The modem is 14.4 vs. 33.6 with competitive makes, and the metal holder for sheets used with the auto feeder is unattractive and has some functional issues. Although less important, the printing on the display panel has some inconsistencies that take away from its appearance and there is no built in handset. Although HPs tech support is good, HP skimped on some corners with this unit and their defective cartridge policy needs improvement. Doing it again, I'd probably take a closer look at the new Brother machine.

Summary: 10 minute setup - works like a champ!
Review: I was looking for a good, inexpensive plain paper fax machine when I came across this HP V40. I've used a lot of HP printers, scanners, etc., so I knew that HP was probably a safe choice. I compared it against the Brother and Panasonic models.

Color wasn't a requirement, as far as faxing goes, and we have a lot of other color printers, and scanners around, so at first I thought it might be too much machine. I was pleasantly surprised.

First, the unit took less than ten minutes to unpack, setup, and align. If you can read simple two and three step instructions, you can easily handle this unit.

As soon as I had it set up, and had programmed in the time and date, then company name and fax no., I grabbed a full color postcard that we use in our mailings and fed it through to make a copy. In about ten seconds I had a stunning duplicate on even basic ink-jet paper.

The fax functions are flawless, with 8 bit grayscale you can see incredible detail in the fax image. The unit is fast, easy, great quality, all typical of HP.

Summary: Great features but major slow
Review: I was so pleased wit this unit. It had all the features I wanted, but wow is it slow when printing!

Its not all the time, it seems to happen randomly, but its 75% of the time, which is really bad.

When I say slow, I mean, the head goes across real slow...... sits there and seems to think about it........ then goes back across and repeats the thinking.... does that the whole page.

This is a nightmare when printing out a 20 page paper for college. Thats another thing it seems like I was loading paper every other day, this machine doesn't hold much for a OfficeJet.

The features however were great; if you want a machine that has thing like "auto phone/fax switch" (this is a feature that makes it so the fax machine will only pick up fax calls and not disturb normal calls without using distinctive ring) it also has the feature distinctive ring, but you really dont need it.

The fax feeder never once jammed, no matter how many pages i faxed off, very nice.

Like I said, great machine, just prints really slow, i had a HP P1000 before this machine, I went back to that one.

If you buy this HP V40, don't say I didnt warn you, and keep your receipt, (u got 14 days to return)

Summary: Perfect Device
Review: I've owned mine for over a year now and still there has been no problems with it so far.....not even a paper jam. It prints, faxes and makes copies perfectly. I have only used it to scan once and that turned out well. It's a very handy space saver but the thing I love about it also is the fact that it lets you know the extent to which you are about to run out of ink. This device can be used with or without your PC. This piece of machine is great for small business or just regular private use. HP stuff ROCKS!!!!

Summary: The best all-in-one for small businesses on a budget
Review: If you work from home, or operate a small personal business, then you probably have clearly defined wants and needs in your office equipment. You want a high-quality fax machine that you can trust to send and receive documents without your attention. You want a printer that will produce presentation-quality results without wasting ink. You might want to scan receipts or invoices into your computer, and a low-volume copier would be nice. Most of all, you need this equipment to be well-made, reliable, and easy to use, and you'd like it all to cost as little as possible.

With the OfficeJet V40, you get all of that.

As a consultant, I have recommended this machine to a variety of Mom & Pop shops and executives who like to take paperwork home. I have never heard a complaint nor seen a return. The V40 (both SE and XI - the only difference is in the distribution channels) isn't a speed demon, and it lacks flatbed scanning, but its price and versatility make it an excellent value. Large office? Get two!
