Rating: Summary: Nice Except For Ink Thirst Review: Overall this is a very good inexpensive ink jet printer. The image quality, black and white or color, plain paper or photo paper, is outstanding. It's fairly fast and fairly quiet. My only real complaint with it is that it goes through ink like crazy. More specifically though, the small ink cartridges tend to dry out rapidly once opened. If you don't do a lot of printing, you will be replacing the cartridges very often (per page). For example, I only print about 50-100 pages per year. But, I have to replace the (black only) ink cartridge 2-3 times per year, so I end up getting 20-30 pages per cartridge. However, if you do a lot of printing, I'm sure you'd get much more use out of a cartridge, as it would not have time to dry out and you'd be using all the ink. Fortunately you can replace only the black or only the color catridges separately, and while not cheap, they're not ridiculously expensive as some others are. That's my only knock on it, it's a fine little beast otherwise.
Rating: Summary: very nice printer- but needed new ink after ~100 pages. Review: setup was easy. print beautiful, quick. price great. after having lexmark printers, i shopped with regard to replacement ink prices. canon replacement ink prices seemed reasonable. after purchase, i saw the ink tanks were tiny (9ml black, 5mlx3 color). my old lexmark tanks don't indicate volume, but they look to be 3 times larger than the canon. with the lexmark, i was getting 6 months(about 1000 pages) of printing. with the canon, i used up the black ink after only about 100 pages (half of them cd covers) in 16 days. print quality was set at "standard"- and did not "clean heads" or do other ink-wasting activities. i got far less than the 300 pages the manual says you'll get, esp. when you consider the number of pages that were plain cd covers. i used the tank until it failed- did not replace when the warning came up (worked for about 20 pages). i haven't done much color printing yet, only a few photos and mixed documents. i'm sure the color won't last long, either (manual says 170 pages). i recommend the printer, but be sure to have replacement ink tanks on hand.
Rating: Summary: Worst printer I have ever owned Review: The Canon S300 has been a nightmare. My invoices come out fuzzy and or faded. After two months of lite work it needed a part replaced. Plus the ink cartridges are so small that you have to replace them very often and office depot and other suppliers don't carry them, so you better not run out. The only place I have found them is on the internet.
Rating: Summary: This Printer Rocks For The Price Review: The Canon S300 outperforms most printers costing twice the price. I checked out numerous models from various manufacturers and I bought the lowest priced printer of all, the S300. Text and graphic output is stunning. Plus, this printer is unbelievabley FAST! The S300 even out performs higher end models from Canon! I don't know how Canon can sell a printer of this quality for under a $(...). Some say the S300 looks ugly and boxy but I LIKE its styling.(12/27/01) A month later and this printer STILL rocks for the price. I found that the printer requires some tweaking. There are numerous color, brightness, contrast and other controls in the printer driver software. Configuring these settings AND using glossy photo paper will yield some jaw-dropping results. Text is speedy and crisp. I would buy this printer again in a heartbeat!
Rating: Summary: Low Price, Good Mileage with Ink, Great Results Review: The Consumer's Reports review detailed how sparing with ink the S300 is. That same rating gave this printer high marks for print quality, both photo and text. I have run off probably 1000 pages so far, mostly MS Publisher, text and photo combined. I say the ratings are true. Don't worry about the noises some people report. Sure, it does click and clack when hybernating and waking up, but you'll quickly get used to it. The S300's output on regular paper seems to benefit from generations of technology beyond the HP 697C (about 5 years old, I guess) that it replaced in my home. Plug and play with my XP operating system was simple and fast. By the way, I do order replacement cartridges online, 3 or 4 B&W and 1 or 2 color at a time. Ink costs are very reasonable if you shop around. All my experiences have been positive with this printer, I highly recommend it, for photos or text. Update: January 2004. Color will no longer print. Tried cleaning heads, reinstalling drivers, NEW INK CART, etc. It just half died, still prints nice B&W. It had hard use, but only lasted a little over one year...
Rating: Summary: Good printing too much whirring and clicking Review: This is a good printer no doubt about it. The speed is superb for the price and the quality is excellent. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the amount of time the thing spends "cleaning its print heads and capping the ink tanks" which is what tech support tells me all the whirring and clicking is all about. When you turn it on it will spend 20-30 seconds whirring and clicking. If you don't print anything for a little while it will spend another 20-30 seconds doing the same thing as goes into a kind of resting mode. When you decide to print again guess what another 20-30 seconds of activity. When you turn it off another 20-30 seconds of mucking about. What worries me is that it sounds like something has broken inside the printer while its doing this but tech support assures me its normal. The speed of printing per page is rather irrelevant when it spends so long doing this... I like the separate ink cartidge as well. I've set mine up for b/w printing so that I can save the ink in the expensive color cartridge for when I really need it.
Rating: Summary: Canon S300 Printer is Very Good Review: This is an excellent printer for the price. I print text, graphics and photos and it does a very good job and is fast. The ink lasts surprisingly long given the size of the cartridges. I expect you would really have to go to the high end (...) before you would see a printer significantly different for the price (I looked around quite a bit). I am satisfied and recommend this printer.
Rating: Summary: FAST and FURIOUS Review: This is by far one of the best printers out in the market. Bar none. But the little things Canon could do if they could just add one little extra: Parallel port. Yep, this is a USB only printer and as a gadgets man, I have a scanner, external burner, digital camera, etc. I've got uses for my limited USB ports and I'm not happy to hog one with a PRINTER when a PRINTER already has its own PARALLEL port. Oh well, strike one for Canon. The speed is FAST. So fast and quiet that I'm so amazed. Generally, I get around 9 pages a minute. I print color as well and it takes around 5 pages a minute. Not too shabby! The design is awesome. Just like the S100 and S200, it looks good and is very compact. But it is heavier than the previous models, but that's only because it is quieter and faster. The paper feed is adequate. Hold around 30 pages. Not too bad. Glossy paper would get you amazing effects. I use it even for reports. Just looks great.
Rating: Summary: Big on Quality Small on Ink Tanks Review: This printer is capable of outstanding performance. I have printed photos on Office Depot Premium High Gloss Photo Paper and gotten PERFECT PRINTS. My only objection to this printer is the small size of the ink tanks. They do not last long. I have shopped around and found BestBuy the cheapest place to buy new cartridges. It is not recommend to refill the bci-24 because it does not have an attatched print head and for some reason refilling increases risk of damaging print head. $99 to replace head. I would recommend this printer.
Rating: Summary: I was suprised... Review: This was the first Canon printer I've owned and am kicking myself for not buying Canons earlier. The S300 is very reliable and unlike most other printers, after purchase it continues to be economical. Unlike most Lexmark and Epson printers (which I'm most familiar with), the S300 uses ink cartridges that are independent of the printer heads, cutting their cost by nearly 75%. Aside from the economic benefits of it, this printer prints brilliant and crisp color that seems to mix perfectly with black ink. On some of my previous printers, the black spots in photos looked a little dull or out of place because of the color and quality of the ink. This printer, if used with Canon cartridges will produce beautiful pictures every time. Then there are the added print features such as monochrome (which basically will print a black and white version of your picture), illustration (which will make your picture appear as if it had been drawn or painted), and other quality and color enhancing effects. Overall, this is an outstanding printer that is more than worth every penny. If you're looking for a printer that will print a report or photo with little problem, this is the printer for you. Pros: -Economical -Brilliant Colors -Reliable -Compact -Can print on large assortment of media Cons: -Not the fastest printer on the market
