Summary: Rip off
Review: This printer is designed to waste ink! You do not have the option of printing only in black ink, so if you print from the internet, you waste colored ink on things you don't want in color.

This printer will not operate without a full color cartridge. Obviously, this was designed to make you keep buying more cartridges. It was not designed for your convenience or ease of use.

I've used an Epson Stylus Photo 700 since 1997, it has the option of using a black ink default. You control if you print in color or black and white.

This printer is fast and the copy is decent, but an obvious ink rip off and I'm not impressed with HP and their ink selling schemes.

I'll be glad when it dies. I might give it an early grave.

Update: March 10, 2004. It died. I was printing on card stock and something is now jammed and it does not seem fixable. It is not worth the shipping to mail it to someone to try to salvage it. I think I'll take a hammer to it.

Summary: Massive Ink Consumer
Review: This printer is well-designed in terms of size, but in terms of ink consumption, it is poor. Firstly, the ink cartridges are veyr expensive(about $$$ each), and they are consumed so quickly that the low price of the printer is quickly counteracted by the high price of maintenance.

Summary: Great Printer
Review: When my wife needed to take her printer (an Epson Stylus) back, I needed another printer. Because I print letters and envelopes mostly, I just wanted a no-nonsense inkjet that I could use to print out reports, articles and so forth as well.

After looking around, I settled on the 3420. I didn't expect much from the printer, considering the price. However, it has consistently exceeded my expectations; inkjet printer technology has come a long way in the two years since we bought our last printer!

This printer is very fast; text documents come flying out. This is good, considering speed was a big concern for me. The print quality is also excellent; photos look better than they do from our Stylus 500. The setup is very easy and the print driver is a breeze to use from both Windows XP and MacOS X. The other big selling point of this printer is the form factor; it's very small, and because the paper tray and output are both on the front, it doesn't take a lot of desk space. It looks good as well.

The only minor problems I've had have been with ink smudging; the ink needs to dry a little bit before you can touch it, but once you know that, it's fine. Envelopes also tend to smudge a bit in the corner, but then I realised that loading about five envelopes in the paper tray fixes this problem.

Unless you need specific features from a higher-end inkjet (e.g., larger paper sides, a duplexer, full-bleed printing, etc.) I'd recommend this; save yourself some money for ink cartridges!

Summary: broken in 6 months...
Review: worked fine for a while, the usual paper jam every once in a while, but other that that it was pretty good... then all of a sudden, something inside broke, out of the 90-day warranty of course, and this thing is unusable. not recommended.

Summary: Junk
Review: Worked for about a month and then it started smearing the print at the bottom of every page. Now it only prints in blue. I've changed print cartridges and spent hours tinkering with the software to no avail.

You get what you pay for, I guess.
