Summary: Not reliable
Review: I bought this printer almost a year ago and it still works great. It is very easy to install. It is lightweight and prints at a considerable speed (in type). A bad thing about it though is, it might be just me, but the paper gets jammed about every 3 pages which really irritates me. I'm not using special paper, just the standard HP 92 paper. I recommend it to anyone who moves their computer around a lot. It is so easy to fold up and move. I guess I could sacrifice a few paper jams and noisyness for its convenience

Summary: Beware!
Review: I bought this printer in August '03 and used it occasionally; however, by November '03 it was broken. A small black plastic part jumped out of the printer, exactly as other reviewers of this product had encountered with their own printer.

Summary: not bad for the price
Review: i had no problems getting it to work on my winXP pro machine. i plugged the puppy in, windows fired up the new hardware wizard, i put in the cd that came with the unit and finished the install w/o incident.

the "best" print quality for text pages is ok, but i wouldn't use it to print out a resume, ie, if you're trying to impress someone(i have a laser printer for that).

i bought this printer just to print out text stuff really quick since my laser printer prints at a slow 4ppm. the 10ppm rating is for draft mode not for best quality mode which is ok for me.

altho i didn't intend on printing color stuff i did pick up a box of photo quality paper just on a whim. i was pleasantly surprised how well a low-budget printer can print photo-quality graphics. as long as you don't try to print small pics into 8x10s the photo-quality print is pretty impressive. it got me to wonder how well mid or high-end inkjets will print if this cheapo model can do this well.

one quirk i noticed is that the printer will pull the paper from the feed unevenly, you can't really tell on the print out...but when you see the paper going in crooked it makes you worry.

all in all i'm satisfied with the printer, it does what i need it to do adequately...it does what i really didn't need it for(color photo printing) way better than i expected.

Summary: Broke on me too!
Review: I have had this for under 1 year, and the same thing happened to me! I googled hp 3420 and found this, and now I see what happened, little plastic piece broke and, like the other lady, I can fix things, but this isn't fixable.
what a rip off HP.
I only bought this since I could refill the ink myself, ( many of the new ones won't let you!) but Im very dissapointed that they haven't issued a recall or offered to replace these, when obviously everyone is finding the same problem, and it is defect in thier product!

Summary: Decent Printer If you don't do much Printing
Review: I have seen the 1 star reviews and I am sure they are probably right, but if you don't print much, this is a ok budget printer. I've had no problems with it in the 6 months I've had it but then again, I print like maybe 5 pages per month. It's a good printer if you need to provide a printer to your grandma or someone who uses a printer not much.

Summary: Great Printer for a Cheap Price
Review: I just bought this printer, and I have been trying them out for a couple of days now. So far it has been working great. Here is my input about this Item.

Pros:
1. VERY Simple to install. Just plug the USB wire from the printer to your pc/laptop or mac (and the power-chord too) and you ready to go.
2. Works great with Windows XP.
3. Compact in space, excelent for small rooms.
4. Prints great photo picture.
5. You can see how much ink you have left on your monitor.
6. Ink easy to install.
7. Black ink cartridge is cheap too. (Which I always buy since I print a lot of documents. Average Cost: $18)
8. Prints really fast in Econofast mode. And the quality is still good.

Cons:
1. Uses ink fast, if you print a lot of pictures.
2. Coloured ink cartrige is expensive for something so small.(Average Cost: $25)
3. Kind of noisy when printing in normal-mode.
4. You have to buy the USB wire separately, (but so does every printer that you buy. Cost about 20 dollars or less.)

Who should buy it?
1. People that lives in dorms.
2. People that prints schoolworks, homeworks, letters, reports several times a week.
3. People who prints photos once-in-a-while.

Who should NOT buy it?
1. Heavy printer uses.
2. Digital Photographers, cause you will end up buying a lot of coloured ink cartridges.

So my overall comment is:
NOT BAD for something cheap and and small.

Summary: Not reliable
Review: I purchased the 3420 originally in March 2003. It broke in June 2003 - luckily within the 90 day warranty. HP Shipped my a refurbished 3420 and that just November 17th - outside of the 90 day warranty for the refurbished printer. There is a plastic piece that connects the printer cartridge to the belt - this is what broke in both printers. I received no compensation for the 2nd printer breaking down, and HP really had nothing to say. I do not recommend you purchasing this printer. Spend a little more money and purchase anything other than an HP!

Summary: Excellent Choice
Review: It's tiny and quiet and ...most of all ,
the price is really NOT EXPENSIVE !!!

Also , it prints well when I print
photos from my digital camera ,
the quality is not bad ,
still I can see dots , but ...
I don't have to stare at every picture that close , right ?
