Summary: Stunning photo quality prints for pocket change price
Review: If you are looking to print your digital photographs this is the printer for you! Online photo printing sites can't hold a candle to the quality this printer produces, both in price and in consistent results.

As an amateur professional who works with real photographic prints I can tell you I was amazed at the level of detail this printer was able to reproduce. My limitation is my digital camera not this printer.

Summary: A great all around home printer!
Review: After having used an HP laser printer at home for so many years, I was skeptical about buying an ink jet. They're slow, they gobble up ink, and if you get the printouts wet, the ink will run. Well, when I heard about the 5550 I knew it was time to "get color". And I was totally blown away by the performance of this affordable little printer.

Text and color graphics are great, of course. Color photos come out perfect, limited only by the quality of the source image. I even borrowed a good digital camera from work, and was amazed by the quality of photos produced by the 5550, far better than what we ever got from our regular 35mm camera. It's kind of a hassle to switch the ink cartridge and paper when printing photos, but if you only do this once in a great while, it's not a big deal. Takes just a few seconds.

So far I've printed a ton of pages, many with lots of color, and still haven't replaced any ink cartridges, so they seem to last quite a while. Plus, it's faster than my old laser printer. So I highly recommend this as a great HOME printer, especially if you'd like to print photos once in a while. For an office environment, I'd recommend sticking with laser (I've worked as a lan administrator, and have purchased a lot of printers over the years).

The only downside is that the ink on the printouts can run if you get them wet. But that's not likely to happen often, and the high quality color printouts are worth it. I believe that this is the best overall home printer available.

Summary: HUZZAH!
Review: I picked up the DeskJet 5550 yesterday from a local retailer (via Amazon.com), took it home, and had it up and running within ten minutes--at least half of which was unpacking time. I can't imagine a quicker, simpler installation! Obviously I haven't had a lot of time yet for hoop-jumping, but in my initial tests it really shines. With the standard tri-color ink cartridge on cheap paper, photo quality is very good to excellent, so I expect nothing short of exceptional with the photo cartridge and six-color printing on good paper. Plain black text is as crisp and clear as any laser printer, and although it's not as quick as I might prefer, I can muster some patience when I know the quality is going to be this good. I still have a long way to go before I can make a final judgement on the 5550, but my initial impression could not be better. Again . . . HUZZAH!

Summary: Prints great, no problems!
Review: This printer has been working great for 3 months and I'm excited to say I haven't had a major problem. I usually only print a couple times a week, but thats enough for me. I still have full ink cartridges and the drivers work well with Windows 2000. I'll let you know if it goes hay-wire. For now, its a good product for a good price.

Summary: A great, affordable printer.
Review: I purchased this printer to replace my fragile, and now nonfunctioning, Lexmark 5700. The HP 5550 has been reliable and efficient.

Summary: Excellent printer for text & photos
Review: If you can afford only one printer, the HP 5550 is it. This printer not only prints great text, it also so an excellent job on photos (with photo cartidge).

Summary: Has AC Adapter
Review: The printer performs well with good quality photo prints. And it is fast when using draft mode. But beware that the ink carts are expensive (I couldn't find other vendor compatible carts). And the thing that I dislike the most is the huge AC adapter. It's 4 1/2 inches long and takes up a lot of space on a power strip. Had I known about the AC adapter I would not have bought this printer. That's why I give it only three stars.

Summary: This is one beautiful printer
Review: It may seem weird to love a printer so much that you want to tell everyone you know about it, but I love this printer! When I say it's "beautiful", I mean both the quality of the printing and the printer itself. It has a very stylish, modern look, a big change from that boxy old beige printer I had previously. Plus, it prints about 3 times as fast as my old printer. Anyone wanting a printer for home use cannot go wrong by choosing this one. It's a winner!

Summary: Good printer for a Good Price
Review: This is a solid little entry-level photo printer. It uses the new HP 56, 57, and 58 cartridges. It is rather low-profile, and it looks a bit like a U.F.O. It has top-of-the-line resolution (4800x1200 d.p.i.) like it's big brothers, the 7150, the 7350, and the 7550. For the price, this is a good little printer. I don't want to sound like it isn't. But, there are a few disadvantages. One, like the 7150 and 7350, it only uses two of the three cartridges at a time. The black #56 and the photo #58 cartridges must be exchanged every time one changes the type of print they are using. This can be rather cumbersome. Not impossible, but a touch annoying. The other disadvantage is no 4x6 photo tray for automatic uptake. The tray is available on the 7150 and up. Also, the text printing is top shelf. My dislike of the cartridge swapping goes for the 7150 and 7350. It only goes away on the 7550. It uses all three. Also, the text printing is top shelf. If money is an issue, this is still a fine printer. It will have the same output as its big brothers in the line. But it lacks some of their features. It is not bad all. The body of the printer is very solid. It is good if there are little hands around it. As said before, it is low profile. It feeds and ejects from the front side like most HP, which means you need little room above it. The cartridges are pretty typical. The 56 is cheaper than most other HP black cartridges, the 57 color is about the usual price. The 58 photo color is generally somewhere between 56 and 57 in price.

Summary: HP DeskJet 5550 Color Printer
Review: After just a few days using this printer, I am convinced it's a real winner at a very resonable price (especially for HP). The color, speed, and price are what led me to buy this printer. I am not disappointed; and I rate it at 5 stars based on this.

However, the ink jets are typically pricey, therefore a 3-star rating for this. And I realize that HP is really in the supply business and not the printer business. So, all-in-all, a 4.5-star rating.
