Summary: HP are scammers dont buy DEFECTIVE PRODUCT
Review: this printer at first was good i didnt really need a super fast printer i dont really use it a lot. the first ink cartrage that came with the printer printed well over 300 pages the second ink cartrage printed less than 200 papers. i think that this is a [deceptive exercise] and worst of all the printer use to print the pages out in a couple of seconds but ever since ive changed the ink cartrage it prints about one page per minute(black & white)! i think its a scam. i will have to get rid of this printer. there is obviously some design defects wrong with it thats why it is not being sold anymore. you can only find this printer refurbished because evry1 is tryn to get rid of theirs. hp are scammers dont buy any hp printer. i bought this printer after looking at all the prices of ink etc but the ink lasts significantly shorter DO NOT BUY.

Summary: Paper jams and printing "slides" off the paper
Review: After one month and minimal use, my HP Deskjet 5550 went haywire. It started making a horrible, loud screeching sound after printing. Next thing I knew, the printing was sliding off the side of the page when using the color cartridge (both the regular cartridge and the photo cartridge). I bought another (expensive) cartridge thinking maybe I was out of ink, and that was a waste of money. The black cartridge worked fine for a little while, but it started doing the same thing after a while. Unfortunately, I had the printer for a while before I used it, so I passed the deadline for returning it to the store I purchased it from. I've heard of two other people who've experienced the same thing. Wish I could give it a good review. The couple of times I did print pictures (at the beginning), they were beautiful. So disappointed and frustrated that it junked out!!!!

Summary: Outstanding printer for the price
Review: When my 820Cse, which cost me roughly $400 six years ago, started to die, I bought this printer intending to "borrow" it before grandfathering it down to my kids after shopping for a new printer for myself. But I'm so happy with the printer that I'm keeping it for myself. For the money, you really can't beat it.

Granted, the estimated cost of six cents per page is steep, but that just motivated me to hook up my trusty old 4MP for black-and-white printing, which I should have done long ago. Other than the large footprint, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this printer. For the price, the quality of photo prints it turns out just blows me away. And text, when I use it for that, is very nice, too.

I don't expect a $100 printer to last forever, but I'm sure I'll be happy with this one for as long as it does last. Another quality HP product.

Summary: Beware: HP 5550 Printer is a DEFECTIVE DESIGN
Review: -I have been dealing with HP technical support in New Dehli for over 6 weeks & have received 3 defective 5550 printers. The defective design pertains to the spring loaded covers that hold in the ink cartridges. The plastic hinges and plastic clips that retain these covers are weak & brittle based on their insufficient size/material/design. With normal use pieces of the hinge or clip break off no matter how carefully you try to change cartridges. Sometimes the cartridge cover springs open inside the home storage position & prevents the cartridge heads from coming out to print.
-I have used many other HP printers at work and home and have never had any problems. It appears that the fold down cartridge covers are a relatively new idea, one that has not been perfected.
-Also note: the size of the ink cartridges and the amount of ink has been reduced significantly. This is obviously a move by HP to make more profit on ink, which I am sure is already a massive margin. Think about any printer you own. How much did you spend for the printer vs. how much did you spend on replacement ink over the life* of the printer?
*except for model 5550 because of it's absolutely short life

Summary: Tech Help/Cust. Service
Review: I agree with previous reviews that this printer just sucks up the ink. Black or Color. And having had only 1 other printer (an old Canon), I am not a 'print expert'. I do however find that my text prints are sharp. I am still learning and experimenting with color photo's. However, my biggest gripe is when you call HP for a SIMPLE question. This printer has only a black ink cartridge slot, and a color ink slot. Which one do you remove to insert the "photo color cartrige"?? Simple Question! I found no instructions about this anywhere in the "Printers Assistant" or "Users Guide" automatically installed when you set up the printer. I called the support care phone number and was transferred to the technical dept. They said they could not help me and transferred me to another customer service dept, who hung up on me. I called back, asked for customer service and was transferred BACK to the technical dept.! Now, in ALL these cases, I first specifically asked the simple question about which ink cartridge to "pull out" to replace with the photo color cartridge. Perhaps there was a language barrier and these 4 people did not understand plain English..I thought English was spoken in India??....But the real worry is that this is a simple question that a 16 year old sales clerk at Best Buy could probably answer. But 2 technicians and 2 customer service reps. couldn't. God help me if I have a real problem! P.S. I found my answer on THIS website from a review!

Summary: photo printing excelence
Review: I started with a HP printer that came with a computer package, this would print everything that I wanted but the exception to this was photo printing. The quality was something to be desired.
I started looking at diferent printers to give me the photo printing reproduction that I wanted the price range was enormous.
I looked at all sorts of printer manufactures and printers.
I came upon this (5550) by having a new printer at work, I tried printing on normal and photo paper and the result was brilliant.
The next day I purchased exactly the same and I am so impressed with the result I feel I have to shave my opionins with H.P. and you.
GO ON - TREAT YOURSELF - A MUST FOR GENERAL PRINTING AND GREAT PHOTO QUALITY.

Summary: the hp deskjet 5550 -- it's a piece
Review: I bought this printer 5 months ago. We have used it moderately. The printer broke, both lights flashing and I could not fix it. I contacted e-mail support and they suggested several options and this did not resolve the issue. I called hardware support and they told me "Don't worry we will support you". After giving them the serial number and model number they told me the product was not under warranty and I could either use e-mail support which I had already tried or pay $25 dollars for 7 days of hardware support. I will try to take the product back to the store I bought it at and get my money back. Needless to say I will no longer be purchasing HP products.

Summary: Great Mac OS X printer--margins different from Win, though
Review: HP is one of the best printer manufacturers and has been for many years. Almost everything about this printer is superior to the one that came with my Mac, a Lexmark Z53. Installation was a breeze and took only about 5 minutes, including software and hardware installation. I just followed the huge, well-illustrated diagrams included in the box and had no trouble understanding what should be plugged in where. Likewise, installing the driver was simple and quick.

The 5550 has the same maximum resolution as the Z53, but the inks are better-blended and have superior color quality. Also, as far as ink is concerned, the HP cartridges actually cost less in many places and can be used until they're empty (unlike some older printers that won't let you print below a certain ink level). The paper tray is easily accessible because of its front-loading design and doesn't jam the way some top-loading printers frequently do. Printing is much quieter than comparable Lexmark models and is less prone to blurred double images. Several months after getting the printer I bought the two-sided printing device, which simply plugs into the back and saves a good deal of paper.

So far, I only have two complaints that prevent me from giving it a full five stars. First of all, edge-to-edge printing (as shown on the pictures on this site and the box itself) is only available to Windows users, so my printouts have uneven top and bottom margins. Also, the 5550 is a desk space hog compared to my last HP printer, especially on my standard-issue dorm room desk. Still, these are minor complaints compared to the problems (and expenses) I had with my Lexmark.

Summary: Super
Review: Purchased the machine about 4 months ago (at full price). Have gone through 3 sets of color cartridges in that time.
Photos are fantastic, except for 8x10 taken with 3.1 Kodak digital. They are a little grainy. Probably the camera. I have had a few that were really great.
Ink is expensive - so whats new.Other than that I have been very pleased with the 5550 and have recommended it to a number of friends and purchased one for my daughter, at a greatly reduced price.
