Rating: Summary: Immediate gratification - however, time will tell Review: Purchasing this printer was such a difficult decision for me. My main hesitation was a direct result of the ink cartridges (they are quite a bit smaller than those of the 900 series - black containing 19 ml of ink, and the tri-color containing 17 ml). I didn't want to buy this printer and then end up being afraid to print anything out because of my need to save ink. No one wants to buy a printer only to be a slave to the ink cartridges, plopping down $60 every time you turn around, right? After reading an independent reviewer say that the cartridges only decreased by a little more than 20% after printing out over 100 b/w & color images, I figured I'd buy it. I don't think you will find a negative review on the quality of this printer - it's unlike anything I've ever seen: vivid colors, high resolution, stunning photograph-quality prints. Bottom line: if the ink-life equals the price we pay, then this is by far one of the best printers you will find on the market today. For those of you who have not yet bought a printer and are considering this one, you may want to watch for more reviews to come in regarding quantity vs. quality before making your final decision.
Rating: Summary: Simply the Best! Review: I am by no means a technical guru, but hopefully this review will be helpful to those everyday users just looking for a high quality printer! We are expecting our first baby any day now, so it was important for us to have a printer that would produce high quality prints from our digital camera. The Deskjet 5550 more than delivers! We purchased the optional photo ink cartridge which, when used in the "Best" printing mode, produces amazing photo results. Even the "Normal" mode (which is much faster and uses less ink) creates a crystal clear image. The colors are vibrant and the images are sharp and clear, rivaling the results from any photo lab as well as from my father-in-law's Canon S900 (which costs twice as much as the Deskjet 5550). Graphic and text printing on plain paper are also excellent and fairly fast. Overall, I think this is the best printer out there for the price.
Rating: Summary: Simply Awesome! Review: I just bought and set up this printer tonight (8/7/02) and am so pleased with the printer. It was so easy to set up, looks really nice, and prints out beautiful, lab quality photos. I bought this primarily for photo printing and am thrilled. I used to own an HP 722C and boy what a difference! TOTALLY SATISFIED CUSTOMER!
Rating: Summary: No more processing films. I am all digital Review: This printer is phenomenal. I could not believe a printer could produce such a remarkable image. I bought hp digital camera (hp 715 digital camera) and with it I bought hp deskjet 5550; the result was unbelievable. I kiss my old (cannon) camera goodbye, and fell in love with my new toys. I have a year-and-half old baby and take her developmental pictures very often. I use to take pictures and wait it to be developed for days. often times, I was disappointed by the quality of my pictures. There was no enough light or too much light, etc. My friend recommended me to buy a digital camera and a printer. This was a dream come true. All I do is take as much pictures as I like and print it whenever, or delete it and try it again. I am very happy with this product. -Hirsi Dirir
Rating: Summary: Died after warranty expired Review: I previously had a 722c HP Printer that worked like a miracle. It lasted forever. Actually it still works, but it just got too slow so I bought the 5550. It worked great initially, but just shortly after 1 year, it went nuts. All its lights would flash and nothing was working properly. So now its just sitting there in my room. Its pretty disappointing since I expected all HPs to be of the same quality as the 722c. Too bad.
Rating: Summary: Died after warranty expired Review: Printed great for a little over a year (the duration of the warranty) and then it quit and just flashed all it's lights at us. We're told by a printer repair tech that the logic board is dead.
Rating: Summary: Ok printer Review: This printer is ok... It prints usually pretty good, and the cartirges last a long time if you know what you are doing, and don't use the printer all the time. The bad part of this printer is that it jams at the slightest imperfection in the paper. I just had it ruin two sheets of photo paper because the corner was a little bent. I even made sure it fed the non bent corner first, and it still jamed after printing just a little bit. I would reconmend this to anyone who needs a simple printer that won't let you down. Just make sure your paper is perfect.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: Presently is one year old and doesn't work. All the lights flash indicating a problem. Indicates it is out of ink which is isn't because I have installed two new black cartridges trying to get it to work. Users guide says to reboot it which doesn't help. It doesn't pick up the paper. Only God knows what is wrong with it. It appears it is cheaply make which I guess it is. I would not recommend this printer.
Rating: Summary: Paper Jams and Feed Problems Galore!!! Review: Until purchasing the 5550 I was always a fan of HP printers. I purchased the 5550 in November of 2002. By March of 2003 I had sent the original to HP and had been sent two replacement machines. When I set up the first printer I was horrified by the sound that came out of it. It jammed and no matter what I did, it would not pull paper through. I thought I had received a faulty printer and once it was replaced everything would be fine. After going through customer support I received a replacement (refurbished) printer. I set up that printer and the same sound came out of it. It also jammed and would not work. I went through customer support again and they assured me if I had the problem again they would send me an upgraded printer. So then came the third printer. The sound was no better, but it did not jam until this weekend - unfortunately one year and one month later. I called customer support and was told that it's not under warranty and they would not work with me unless I was willing to pay to have it fixed. This is a flimsy printer and not worth $20. It is the loudest printer I have ever used and it jams more than anything I've ever used. The print quality is good. I do not have any complaints about that...if only I could get it to print. I understand that every once in awhile you are going to get a bad machine. But I think three bad machines in a row is a bad sign.
Rating: Summary: Clean, Crisp Photos Review: I use my hp for everything from printing term papers to photos and I have been thrilled with how well the photos turn out. It is a little slow, but its worth the wait! Since using mine, three friends have gone out and bought the exact same printer!
