Rating: Summary: Lurvely! Review: I have a G4/400 MHz and am running OS 10.2.3. I had an old Apple LaserWriter 300 for a long time, but naturally it wasn't supported on the new OS (computer companies--grrr) and it *was* a little slow, so I decided to take the advice of my friend and investigate a new printer. She swore you could get 'em for [decent money]these days. Lo and behold, the Canon Stylus C82--just under [decent money}. Anyway, I got a "refurbished" one from the Canon site (for a smidge more than I see it's now listed on Amazon) and I've been very pleased. It installed flawlessly, it was incredibly easy to set up (just snap in the color-coded ink cartridges, open the printout tray, attach the paper support and insert paper), and the speed and quality of the prints is excellent. The black text printing is not *quite* as sleek as my old laser printer (if you look very closely), but for all intents and purposes is lovely. It's a very smart printer, I think, as websites and and such don't print out as four pages with miscellaneous lines and buttons spread over all four pages, just tightly printed on one page, without any image loss. I haven't tried printing photos yet, but the colors on webpages and such has been great so far. And there's a button in the print dialogue box that you can use to switch to B&W-only printing if you want to save your color ink for color-necessary jobs. I have moved the Epson PrintCenter app into my dock--which for me is a big symbolic commitment. (Also, I was having a little trouble figuring out where this app was hiding, until I gave in and did this. But like I said, it belongs there anyway.) All in all, the Stylus C82 is an attractive, well-engineered, inexpensive personal color inkjet printer. I'm also now a new fan of Epson, as the quality of their "refurbished" product was excellent. Not to mention, when I got the printer, there were two blue (cyan) cartridges included and no magenta. I thought, 'Damn! I'm going to have send the blue one back and wait for them to process the return before they ship me the magenta, and the damn printer won't work until I get all four cartridges in there--which is going to take forever. Stupid Epson!' But no. I called 'em up and they were great. They told me to keep the extra blue cartridge, and shipped out a magenta cartridge that day--it was at my house in a jiffy. I couldn't believe they didn't hassle me, but I really appreciated it!
Rating: Summary: big time quality Review: I love this printer. I made beautiful postcard invitations on it. It prints almost to the edge of the paper. It's just big. I'm not sure how it will be when I move into a dorm at school. It's also a bit noisy. But other than that, this is a super machine!
Rating: Summary: Excellent for photos and text at a great price Review: Before purchasing my C82, which I have been using for a few months now, I did extensive research. I was pleased from day one with the output, ease of use, etc. with this printer coupled with my PC running WinXP. I got it for use in printing digital photos as well as text documents. The quality of the printed photos is excellent. Hard to tell the difference between my printed photos and photolab developed photos. Apparently, it isn't the fastest printer around, but I'm not in a huge hurry so it isn't a big deal to me. I was surprised to see Consumer Reports give this printer a lower rating than most other printers. I also use an HP 5550 in my home office (employer chose it). Since both were available, I did a little test of my own. In every case, the Epson outperformed the HP both with photos and with text and graphics. The "DURABrite" Epson ink is something to consider--waterproof for color and black. Can't say the same for the HP. Maybe CR didn't learn how to tweak the settings. Hint: for photos, use the "Glossy Photo Paper" setting and turn OFF high speed printing for best results. Also, it is true what they say about photo paper--Epson brand paper will give you the best results. For text I use HP Bright White paper with excellent results. It has been pretty good with ink use, too. I also like the fact that it will not continue printing if any one color runs out. I found that Epson was actually the cheapest source for replacement cartridges, believe it or not. Beat Amazon by just a couple dollars. If I had to come up with a complaint I guess it would be the noisy sounds it makes when it grabs paper. It definitely does so with authority and a sense of urgency! I don't think it will ever have paper loading problems, at least. Just be prepared for a little excitement when it starts printing. For home use, including printing photos from your digital camera, you won't be disappointed with this printer. As for the manufacturer, there is a reason pros use Epson...
Rating: Summary: small tracks Review: I have a specific problem with my new c82, and I will bet that if other people check they will find the same. There are three toothed wheels above the outfeed slot on the printer. On my printer these wheels leave very small tracks all the way across the image. I just got the printer today, and have yet to contact epson about this apparent design flaw. I am still an epson fan, but I don't think that this printer prints quite as well as my epson 880 that just died.
Rating: Summary: Excellent printer with excellent price Review: I was looking at hp printers and have had to deal w/ the hassle of downloading drivers and being on the phone for hrs w/ problems regarding my HP printer and am so happy to now have my epson! It was setup in a matter of minutes w/ no problems and prints beautifully. Great for text and pictures and doesnt make that much noise, I thought It would be loud but it wasnt. Great value and performance. I am a student and this suits all of my needs. I recomend this over cannon, lexmark, or hp, all of which I have dealt with.
Rating: Summary: Great Printer Good Price Review: This printer was never intended to print on glossy paper. It is designed to be a plain paper printer. Photos do, however, come out very well if you use matte paper. And they are better on plain paper than most printers i've tried. I bought this printer primarily because it prints on both sides and I print out a lot of material off of the net. It saves a lot of paper. i have a photo printer. But the ink is expensive. The ink cost is much less for the C82 and lasts much longer. So I figure over not so much time i will save enough on ink costs to pay for this printer a couple of times over.
Rating: Summary: working great... Review: i'm not gonna get too technical, for you could always look them up online.. but my experience with this printer is somewhat to my satisfaction. I saw the sample prints from CompUSA (using epson premium bright white and setting on text&image), the color was very vivid, the black, very.. black. nevertheless, when i brought it home and did my first print, i used it on a regular plain paper.. i noticed how dissatisfied i was. the color came out dull. i printed the same image in different settings, text, text&image, photo, photo (photo enhanced), and best photo. with that image i printed, you could barely tell any difference unless you look at it about 2-4 inches away. wells.. CompUSA did give me free premium white paper, i used that and printed various pictures to see if i would like it returned or is it a keeper. YOU'LL DEFINITELY SEE THE DIFFERENCE comparing regular paper with premium white. premium white paper may not be cheap, but truth is, if i'm only using this to print out school work, and text, i won't need to spend so much on a more superior paper. the photo enhance works great with darker pictures, you'll be able to see the difference comparing side by side; for pictures that are bright, photo enhancement haven't made much difference to my experience.. i like how the inks are in seperate cartridges, someone stated that it's really expensive, but the color cartridge is about 10+ (maybe even for less), the black ink is a little expensive (30+). i also like how the printer stops the printing when one cartridge is out of ink. this way, if printing photo, you won't end up wasting the rest of the inks and paper juss because one of the ink is out and pictures ruined. the noise can be a little disturbing (paper loading) but as time flies, you'll get used to it. (idk why, but when i was printing the pictures it made less noise then when i was printing my text) but still, overall, i still give it a 5 star *hint: dont clean head too often, it'll drain your ink incredibly
Rating: Summary: Great for office but not for photo printing Review: I'm not sure what other reviewers have expected to see when printing photos from an inkjet printer, but this one just does not live up to my expectations. I purchased it based on the reviews on this site and on previous experience with Epson printers, hoping to get a good general-purpose machine that combined speed with good text, graphics and photo printing. Text and graphics are great, but the photos are extremely grainy when printing light colors, even on Epson's recommended semigloss photo paper. After several extended conversations with Epson's tech support, and the receipt of a replacement printer, they finally admmitted to me that photo printing will never be as good on this machine as my old Stylus 740, and suggested that I purchase a photo printer in addition to this printer. Althought the technical support and customer service people I spoke with were all friendly and helpful, and they did offer me a discount on a photo printer, this is not the resolution I had hoped for. On the upside, I am very pleased with it for general office printing. The only other negative I have found is that paper feeding is extremely loud. I actually thought I had broken the machine the first time I used it. If you can get used to the noise, and you don't need to print high quality photos, then this is a great product.
Rating: Summary: No more cheap printers for me.. stick with Epson Review: I had a Epson Stylus 700 Photo printer a few years ago but when I got a new computer it went out. I was disappointed since it printed such great photos. I went out and bought a lexmark since it was all I could afford at that time. I was highly disappointed that it didn't print photos well at all. So for Christmas 2002 I did some research and found this Epson Printer at Best Buy. I tested it out at the store with plain paper then found a package of open photo paper and tested with that also. I was very happy with the results and ended up recieving this printer as a gift for christmas. I take pictures of my niece and print them out on photo paper and put them in her picture album since this printer does so well in printing photos. This printer was reasonably priced for a photo printer and does so much better than a cheap inkjet printer. I will defintely stick with epson from now on.
Rating: Summary: A great all around printer Review: This printer has filled its predecessor's (HP laserjet) place on my desk quite well. Although the sound at startup of a print job made me jump the first time(!) you get used to it and can live with it after hearing how quiet it is during printing and seeing how crisp and clear the output is. The loud sound (as mentioned in other reviews as well) is just the paper feed mechanism grabbing and aligning the next sheet of paper. It does it well - after months of printing on it I have not had a paper or envelope misfeed once (unlike my Lexmark). I thought I had to have a laser printer for clear b/w printing but this affordable printer proved me wrong. And the color really is amazing too - using high end photo paper my digital images come out looking like they came from the lab. It takes a couple of minutes to print 2, 4x6 shots on 8 1/2 x 11 at the highest output - but I think it's worth the wait. It is a lot faster at regular quality settings.
