Summary: A beauty, but with a wart on its cheek
Review: The 5510 is an exceptional value. It copies well. Its print quality is excellent -- no support for the "photo" ink cartridge, but that doesn't seem to matter much. And it's surprisingly fast. Scanning looks okay, though I haven't really worked it hard. Having a multi-sheet fax/copier feeder and a flatbed scanner in this price range is amazing.

The weak point is in the software. Installation (on Win98) was no fun. Installing per instructions from the CD, it did not work right, and broke printing. HP's email support (one hour response from India at 1AM EST!) had the fix: Uninstall, copy the CD to hard drive (600MB), and reinstall from there. Keep that in mind if you buy one.

And, most disappointing, it often WILL NOT PRINT OVER A NETWORK. While not a Winprinter (it uses LIDIL), the fine print (on the support web site) says it won't. CS is more accurate: It prints "within a platform", so a Win98/ME box can print to a Win98/ME server (drivers transfer automatically), but not between NT/2K/XP and 98, or Linux and Windows. This is a real pain in a heterogeneous home environment. They really should fix this, though I fear it's a misfeature designed to sell costlier 6610s (which add network printing).

Summary: Extreme installation issues
Review: This product won't install with Windows XP! I was on the phone serveral times for several hours with HP customer service trying to get this thing functional, but Windows XP has severe compatibility issues. Things I tried...new USB drivers, updating bios, changing USB settings, windows updates, changing startup settings, downloading newest HP software, and numerous hours of installing and uninstalling the software. This was not an easy task considering installation includes over half a gig of software and countless registry changes. Furthermore, their uninstall application leaves those registry changes; affecting future attempts to reinstall the software. What does HP recommend doing to fix this?....Installing and uninstalling the software AGAIN! In searching around the web for solutions, this device has issues with other versions of windows as well. This all in one is worthless, spend the extra money to get a differant one!

Summary: Printer Wouldn't Work!
Review: We bought one of these and it always had a "Phone Off Hook" warning on the printer even though it was hooked up correctly and the phones were not off the hook. Therefore, we could not fax which was one of the main reasons we needed it. After a lot of jumping through hoops, HP decided that the line interface unit (where the phone cords plug into the printer) was defective. I returned the printer to Amazon and they sent a replacement. The new printer has the SAME problem and HP tech support cannot figure out what is causing this. So, the second printer is being returned today. Amazon is great about returns, by the way! I'm really disappointed as a I LOVE my HP Photosmart printer, but I guess it's not meant to be with this all-in-one product. I'm going to search for a different one from a different brand.

Summary: Good item for the price, but boy is it LOUD!
Review: We bought this all-in-one to replace three large items in my small office. I got it at a really good price.... we brought it home, installed it, only to find it making the loudest noises I have heard since dot matrix days! We compared it to our HP DeskJet (which we haven't yet removed) and there was no competition as to speed and sound. The deskjet smoothly slides the paper out, and is almost as quiet as a laser printer. This thing has the print cartridge roam back and forth across the page, and you can see (and hear) it. Watch out when copying... the feeder works well, but it makes this really loud whirring noise. We're trying to figure out if we should spend the extra ching for the next model up. I'm serious when I say it reminds me of the level of printers we saw 10 years ago. However, printing quality is fantastic and sound aside, this is definitely the best 'bang for your buck.' (but wow, what a bang!)

Summary: GREAT PRODUCT
Review: when shopping for an all in one printer, scanner, fax and copier
and saw the hp 5510 i knew it was the one, very smartly done, compact and light weight and with every feature that i wished like exellent speed, scan resolution ,user friendly, automatic document feeder and more. but how good is it? so i went to amazon reviews and the reviews were somehow mixed ,but since i liked it so much i decided to take my chances i did the installation following hp instructions to the letter and had no sofware problems whatsoever. as far as noise when you first turn it on it was a bit more than normal but it soon got to normal after a few prints, not bad at all so far iam really happy with this smart product that was trully designed with the customer on mind. WAY TO GO HP!!
