Summary: This printer bites
Review: Either I'm doing something wrong, or there are just no printers that are compatible with a Macintosh, but this particular one really bites. The quality is marginal considering the reviews I've read here and elsewhere before I bought the thing.

It is fast, it is quiet. There is a dull fog over everything it prints, and colours are anything but exact. If you want print quality get an old Epson photo700 (mine died, and it was noisy and slow, but the quality was incredible).

Borderless prints? Not yet, anyway. I wasn't particularly interested in this, but it is supposed to do it and, well...

If you've been using a dot matrix printer, or have been living on a desert island for the past twenty years, the quality of this machine will blow your mind. While some have had problems with text, this, I think, is the least of this machine's problems. Spend the extra cash. (Epson's ink meters are a joke, seemingly running out of ink after the first page or so, but if you disregard them, you can print for a long time, and to great advantage, as far as I can see).

Summary: We're very pleased with the performance of this printer
Review: This replaced our old Lexmark, and we're very pleased with the improved quality of photo printing. It prints more quickly and the ink cartridges are a bargain, too. Overall, Canon provides good value for the price!

Summary: Gorgeous, fast, quiet, cheap
Review: What more could you say? Print quality is excellent -- photos on the sample 4x5 glossy paper looked like "the real thing." Black type pages just zip through, but best of all the ink is (relatively) cheap! When I think of all the printheads and colored ink I threw away with my old HP....

I should have bought this (or similar predecessor)a year ago, and it would have paid for itself.

Summary: It is fast and cheap to run
Review: This is my third Canon printer. The first two were bottom of the line(BJ 240&1010)that came w/ the PCs. I went broke buying ink [money]BW/[money]color. Not so with the S520. [less money]each tank. And they last longer. As for the ink level gauges. They show either full or empty. No true levels. The low ink warning comes on suddenly. I kept using the tanks that were supposed to be low for about a month. Your print job will stop and you will get a out of ink warning when it is really empty. I've ran all four tanks dry 3-4 times with no apparant problem. The ink does take a few seconds to dry, but it's not wet enough to stain the next page that ejects on top. I'm glad I went for this printer.

Summary: Great price for a versatile printer
Review: This is a great printer for the home, home office, or an extra at the office. It is has an adequate resolution for most jobs, even photos. It is easily compatible with different size and thicknesses of paper (envelopes, 4x6 photo paper, etc.) The best aspect of this printer, and rare on a printer this inexpensive, is the separate ink tanks for the three primary colors (cyan, yellow, magenta) and black. This feature allows you to replace the individual color when it is empty instead of having to replace a cartridge that contains all of the colors when a single color (or black) runs out.

I've been using the printer for three months and have had no problems with it. The software accompanying the printer has a handy feature that allows you to monitor the ink level in the tanks. With moderate use over the past three months (maybe 5 pages a day) the tanks are still almost completely full.

It isn't very loud and starts up and prints a lot faster than my last printer (HP 660C, which also had numerous technical problems). While it isn't a photo-quality printer, nor is it the fastest or quitest out there, for the price, this printer can't be beat.

Summary: Don't be fooled by other reviews
Review: ... I was very disappointed with the results. I ended up returning the printer after messing with is a week or so to see if I couldn't get my pictures to look better. The quality was terrible. The color wasn't very vivid and you could see the pixels (very grainy). I messed with the settings and did what the manual suggested and I still wasn't happy. Needless to say I am looking for other options. Sure it seemed like a great deal...the price was low and the reviews were good...but beware. Aside from quality, it sounded like the thing was going to break when it was getting ready to print. The only positive thing I can say about this item is that it did print fairly quickly.

Summary: I wish I bought an Epson instead...Wet ink smudges!!
Review: I was influenced by positive reviews but can only conclude those people didn't know how much better an Epson is. I have an Epson at home, and bought the Canon S520 for work...what a mistake that was! It has WET INK that must dry before you touch the print or it will smudge (you can grab Epson's right away). The data being sent to the printer stops the computer from working and if it's many pages be prepared to wait for your computer work again (My Epson doesn't do this). The print heads constantly clean themselves...wasting ink...after 100 copies of something my black ink is almost out! The wet ink soaks into bond paper resulting in blurry text, so you have to buy special paper to get decent prints (letterhead paper look terrible). I wish I bought another Epson.

Summary: 5 Star results with great pricing!
Review: For light to medium loads, you can't beat this printer. Good shading and color, although not quite as crisp with black text as I first thought, but certainly, decent small business quality for documents.

It is quiet to operate, the single-type ink cartridges make it cheap to operate (compared to the one piece HP format, which you have to replace when you run out of a single color!) and most important, Canon keeps up on the drivers, so they are up-to-date.

We run a Windows and Mac shop, and Epson, with their always
out-of-date drivers is the bane of our existance. The USB Canon S520 is hooked to the new Macintosh and works flawlessly. They had the new 10.2 (Jaguar) drivers out fairly quickly, and this is actually a good test for Windows users, also. The Mac universe is much smaller, so putting out drivers on a timely basis to this much smaller universe of customers shows an attention to detail in customer satisfaction that Epson is currently lacking.

Nice job, Canon!

Summary: EASY AND GREAT
Review: I know nothing about computers. My son bought me this printer. It was very easy to set up and prints great. I highly recommend it to all users. Experienced or like me, NOT.
