Summary: Excellent bang for the buck!
Review: When my Epson Stylus 740 broke last week, I got somewhat excited about the prospect of "upgrading" my printer. I began the rather tedious process of reading as many online reviews of the numerous photo printers out there. OK, I admit it. I was first attracted to the i850 by its somewhat stylish looks. However, I definitely did not let that influence my final decision. I really did not find any negative comments of substance anywhere on the net about this printer. Some users who are probably not as familiar with photo printing as they could be gave the printer a few bad marks, but I largely discarded those comments. I finally decided to get the thing and it arrived sooner that expected today. Amazon said it would not even be shipped unti 1/20/2003, and today is only 1/15, so I was happy about that.

Now for the initial results:

The install had one hiccup. I am running Windows XP on a fairly loaded computer I built. Not quite state of the art, but pretty good. I followed the quick set-up steps and was quickly on my way. However, mid driver install, the install program would crash and say "module could not be located." The instructions say not to let XP ID the printer and install the drivers automatically. However after several failed attempts to install drivers per Canon instructions ( I even dowloaded current driver from internet), I let XP do the automatic install and then went back and did the extra included software installs. It was quickly recognized by XP and the install went great. Maybe you should just disregard Canon's instructions and let XP do it if you encounter problems. Anyway, on to the printing:

I did not get any official Canon paper other than the small 4X6 included sample pack, so I am using up my supply of high quality Epson matte and glossy papers. The bordeless printing function is great and I have printed very nice 4X6 and 8X10 prints that are as good or slightly better than the Epson 740 I was using. Epson did not have the edge printing feature, and it is nice to have. The prints rival the quality of that produced by Shutterfly's equipment.

The noise...well, again in comparison to the Epson 740, there is no noise. It seems to be a very quiet printer, but then again, the Epson was quite noisy, so this might not be the quietest printer ever, but it is the quietest I have ever been around/used. I can actually hear myself think while it prints.

And it prints very quickly. I am not sure if my computer's and the printer's usb 2.0 ports help to speed things along, but it is very quick. Again, no comparison to the Epson 740. Seems like the 8x10's edge photos print in less than a minute at highest quality. Fantastic!

All in all, I think I made the right decision. I would have liked to try the Epson high end printers (1280, 2200, etc.), but could not afford those. For now, I think this will be a nice addition to my system. When I got mine, Amazon had the best price around and with the free shipping (which was as fast as shipping I've paid a great deal for in the past) it was a no-brainer. Hope this helps. tim g.

Summary: Amazed!
Review: I almost purchased the model in the latest consumer reports but saw this one in someone else's response. So on a whim, i checked out this one and was glad to see such rave reviews. I waited today for the UPS man to see if all the hype was true. well now i am a believer, this thing is AWESOME. Fast, clear, sleek, easy to use and does text superbly for me. The only gripe i had was that a USB cord was not included. I remedied that with a trip to wal-mart for one. I did find out that the staples 4x6 picture paper (100sheets for 17 bux) and it does just fine.

Summary: Awesome
Review: For the price this printer can't be beat. I did a lot of online research to find an affordable photo printer and this one appeared to be the best for the price. I was not disappointed when I printed my first picture. The fact that I can replace the individual color cartridges is a bonus. Buy this one and quit looking aroung. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Review: 4x6 photo printing on Canon's Pro paper looks as good as any store film prints. Installed easily to my Linksys wireless print server. Can not monitor ink levels through the print server though. Very happy with the quality.

Summary: Great photo printer (to begin with)!
Review: I had to edit this review after using this printer for a few months. At first this printer was amazing and produced incredible photos. Since then (and it's only been a few months), I have had to take in the printer twice for repair and it has never been the same since. I had to have the print head replaced the first time and am waiting for the repair shop to call with the results from this second trip in, but I suspect it is the same issue. When I talked to Canon's technical support, the gentleman there told me that they have been seeing "issues" with the print head. He also informed me that they would be coming out with much improved software to go with this printer. I have gone through numerous ink cartridges since it was repaired and the initial settings I was using to produce these incredible pictures no longer produced the same results. The new settings I needed to use produced good quality pictures, but nothing close to what it initially did no matter what kind of paper I used. I am quite disappointed and would love to just get a new printer.

Summary: The Best Photo/General Purpose Inkjet Printer You Can Buy!
Review: I purchased this printer 2 months ago and have found the perfect home printer. The main reason I was in the market was the high cost of "color" inkjet cartridges that I went through like candy in my old Canon and HP printers. I did my research and I wanted a printer that had separate color tanks so that if I ran out of cyan ink I wouldn't have to trash the whole cartride that most likely had plenty of yellow and magenta inks. The individual tanks are far cheaper to buy (at about ~$$$ each) than a new color cartridge (~$$$).

Now for performance. The output quality is fantastic. I have printed out over 40 photos on 4x6 glossy photo paper (I have used 3 different premium glossy brands with little, if any, discernable difference in sharpness or color fidelity. I work for a large major medical equipment manufacturer and we ditribute "low-end" printers for over $10,000 that you would not be able to tell the difference in quality with the naked eye given the same source input. The bottom line is that the photo print capability of this printer is nothing short of stunning. I am also more than happy with the general purpose color and document printing on standard high resolution paper contrary to a number of reviews (usually from editorial product reviewers) that I have seen elsewhere.

The speed of both photo and general purpose printing is nothing short of astounding. I couldn't believe my eyes at the output speed of photo prints and general purpose documents. Documents came out nearly as fast as a laser printer I have at work. And the pinter is so darn quiet. Except for the normal "thunk" as the paper is fed into the machine, I can barely hear the printhead while it is in operation.

In short, if you are looking for a printer that is miserly on printing supplies that produces fabulous photo and general purpose output, then GET THIS MACHINE!
