Summary: Not a bad buy - at the right price
Review: I bought a 171v at [a local store] for [$$$], with a...rebate. Installation and setup was mindlessly simple. I found the Natural Color SW to be useless. After a week I exchanged the unit for another 171v, as there was a noticable color/contrast gradient from top to bottom. The replacement unit had the same color/contrast gradient from top to bottom, although less pronounced. I am not sure I will keep the unit or get a refund and buy an LCD monitor with a digital input.

Summary: Good LCD monitor for a Great price!
Review: I bought my 171v lcd monitor about 1 month ago. Has worked perfectly so far. I just took it out of the box, plugged it into my computer, power, turned it on and that was it. Did not have to install any drivers, even though there is a software CD included. The CD contains drivers and a Natural Color software, I don't like to install things unless needed, so did not even bother to try.

The monitor costed me 5 hundred less a 1 hundred mail-in-rebate from Samsung (found about that in Samsung's website). So the monitor ended up costing 4 hundred bucks! Brand new. I got it from Comp--USA.

Summary: Very good, but not the best
Review: I purchased a Syncmaster 171v around a month back. The installation went off smoothly using supplied CD s/w and the display is sharp and clear till now. Most application s/w and games look good in it. It's higher contrast ratio of 400:1 gives text & graphics a crisper look. It's anyway much better than my previous 17" Samsung CRT.
However, on the downside, the supplied Natural Color s/w is a bit confusing to adjust for best settings. Related to this is the fact that the colors don't quite look rich enough. Another prob. is that my external TV tuner sytem (PAL based) is not compatible with it (though it worked well with the earlier CRT). I don't know whether I am facing this problem alone.
I would recommend this LCD monitor for anybody keen on a good, stable display and who doesn't want the very best, and therefore more expensive stuff :-)

Summary: Well........It's good, but not perfect
Review: Ok, so let me say first, I play games, and that is the main use of my computer. So I am probably expecting better results than most people would ever need with an LCD. Set up was fairly simple, but you absolutely need the drivers supplied installed or everything looks way too bright (I had default brightness on my gf4 4400). After that things looked much better, but still not yet right. Once I launched Counter-strike I knew right away I needed vid card tweaks, because everything in game was way too bright. It's tough to figure out the right balance since there are differeent contrast, brightness, gamma etc. settings on the monitor itself, the vid card, and in game. I finally found some settings that look decent but now from map to map I sometimes need to adjust the brightness because there is a larger cariation of brightness from my crt, which could be better all in all, I'm not sure yet. As for the performance of the monitor in game, things went well. Obviously crt's are still the best choice, but I lan often and needed a more portable monitor. From far distances, moving objects stayed sharper than on my old monitor, but close up there is bluring. It's not like you see trails, so you will still be aiming at the right spot, it's just that the skin textures tend to blend together. I tried everything out later on in UT2K3 as well, which is a very fast game, and again, other than blurring on close up objects, the image stayed sharp and there was no ghosting.

I am still having difficulties with the brightness in general though, I'm sure eventually I'll be able to tweak it somehow. I basically need to lower the brightness of the white, but not any other colours.

If I wasn't using this monitor for gaming, or at least fast paced games, I would most likely give it a 5. The sharpness of the picture is incredible, and the colours are vibrant. I wouldn't hesitate buying this at all for business applications.

Also, though it really has nothing to do with the monitor itself, but the resolution, there is a setting in the control panels to make text larger so that you can offset the effect of the high resolution. (cause the native res is 1280*1024 on this one)

So, time to wrap this review up. I'm happy with my new monitor, it's drawbacks don't affect gameplay all that much, and if you aren't even going to play games, then it doesn't get much better. I would recommend this as an excellent business monitor, and a great lan monny as well.
Thx for reading

Summary: Low Quality LCD Monitor
Review: The more important problem:
I purchased this monitor for (..) . A few months later, I purchased a 17" Dell LCD Monitor for (...) and the quality of the picture is 10 times better. The Dell monitor has rich, vibrant colors - whites are white, darks are dark, picture is sharp and colors are great! The quality of images on the Samsung monitor are considerably duller and greyer. After tweaking the Samsung monitor settings for a while, I could not get the same quality picture as I do with the Dell monitor.

Other problem I had:
There was a degredation in the screen starting in the upper left hand corner. As soon as it started to spread, I sent the monitor in to the Samsung Service Center for repairs. Service was efficient and they replaced the LCD no questions asked. However, the quality of the overall screen still does not compare to a cheaper Dell monitor of the same size.

Bottomline - I would not recommend this monitor, or any other monitor by Samsung if you are picky about screen quality. (...).

In addition, the LCD on my Toshiba Laptop from 1999 still looks better than the Samsung monitor.
