Summary: Great picture for a CRT, lots of controls.
Review: My roommate just got this monitor a couple days ago. I have to say that it has a really impressive display; not quite as good as a new desktop LCD panel, but much better than monitors only a couple years old. I have an older Nanao 17" professional monitor, and I feel like I need to get my glasses checked when I come back to this from the ViewSonic.

One of the great things about this monitor is that it has fantastic geometry controls. These controls allow you to correct geometry problems that are only found on very old monitors; this means that you should be able to keep the display sharp and square for years to come (ever heard of "Cupid's Bow Control"?).

It might sound obvious, but this monitor is BIG. As compared to one of the "short-depth" 17-inch monitors, this baby really takes over the desk. If you have a small desk, you may want to consider an LCD panel instead. All in all, this is a great value for a large, excellent CRT display. This very well may be the last CRT that you ever buy.

Summary: Do not buy a ViewSonic!
Review: My ViewSonic PF790 quit working entirely when it was 7 months old -- my only option for repairing it was to return it directly to ViewSonic in California. First there was the $80 shipping cost (the monitor weighs 55 pounds!), and then I heard nothing for weeks. I contacted their customer service department, who told me that they had not received the monitor, even though I had proof of delivery from UPS -- two weeks before! They then made excuses about being out-of-stock on replacement monitors amd promised to send one as soon as they could. Several more weeks went by, and after three more phone calls to their customer service department, they finally shipped me a "new" monitor. It turns out that the "new" monitor they shipped me was a reconditioned used monitor which has some big problems with the picture tube. They told me I could return that one for another one (at my expense for the shipping, of course), but I decided to forget it. So I'm spreading the word -- Viewsonic [is terrible] and their monitors aren't any better! DO NOT BUY ViewSonic. That's my advice.

Summary: HUGE MONITOR WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS
Review: This monitor delivers a HUGE viewable area, great clarity, and ease of use. What it says is accurate, 18 in. viewable area, precise colors, and lots of pixels! It has a nice, easy to use menu and good instructions. You don't have to have much computer knowledge to get this working quickly. It has a very fast refresh rate so it is as easy to look at as a laptop's screen. The fact that it is flat means that it doesn't bulge in the middle. This allows for much easier viewing.

The only MINOR setbacks are 1. It is enormous. It weighs 55lbs. and takes up a huge amount of desk space. Read the dimensions carefully. 2. There are 2 lines going thru the screen. They can only be seen when the page is absolutely pale white. These do not affect programs. They're hardly noticeable.

There isn't much more to say about it because it does it's job flawlessly, and doesn't have any problems with it. The way I look at it, $... is a small price to pay for this much quality in a monitor. This is definitely worth looking into. (no pun intended)

Summary: Don't Bother
Review: We had heard good things about the Viewsonic range on monitors, but unless you're both blind and deaf, don't consider the PF790 if you're looking for resolutions greater than 1024x768 (which kind of defeats the purpose of a 19").

At 1600x1200 resolution, the display is blurry, and makes an intolerable whining noise (we tried a range of graphics cards and monitors to isolate the problem). Very disappointed! We'll fork out the extra cash for a good Sony next time.

Summary: Own it, support them.
Review: We support Viewsonics, Hitachi's, and Compaq's. The Viewsonics are the only ones we have never had a problem with. I personally own this specific model. It has one of the finest images I have seen on a Flat Screen (doesn't require adjusting the angles.) The image is crystal clear, although this model is a bit older and there are now much better viewsonics out there. I would purchase Viewsonic or Sony. They both make great imaging products. I think the people that were having problems with this had all bad video cards. I have run Banshee's, G450's, and Radeon's on this monitor. None of them have had an issue.
