Summary: Replaced 17" Princeton CRT
Review: ..... This flat panel is plug and play ; disconnected my old 17" Princeton CRT and connected the Sony in about 15 min. The panel is very light and certainly takes up a lot less desk space. I read the 7/24/03 review on cnet.com where the editor writes a goofy analysis ... "The Sony SDM-HS53 attempts to come off as slick and stylish, but it just ends up looking smudged. Its wide bezel--an inch and a half on the sides, an inch on the top and bottom--is made of shiny, black, reflective plastic that seems to serve no purpose other than to show off fingerprints on CNET"; then she writes ... "What the SDM-HS53 lacks in looks, it makes up for in performance". That's why I bought it. This is a new product, it was released by Sony on 2/3/03.

Summary: Not a Good Choice
Review: I bought this monitor about a month ago. This was to be used in a multiple station office setup. I wouldnt recommend this monitor to any one that wants a quality monitor. First, lets talk about refresh rates. At 30 m/s its slow for such an overpriced monitor. Also the setup controls make it difficult to tweak. Also image quality isnt spectacular, they tend to be blotchy and you miss much detail. I have also noticed that the reflective black trim is made out of low quality materials and tends to collect more finger prints than the local police station. The screen also tends to get warmer that it should. And finally the the power supply tends to make a humming noise (its a standard in all of them, I own 5. One for each of my office workstations). To sum it all up, its a too expensive to be worthy of buying and you are simply paying is the Sony name. There are many monitors out there that are worthy of buying at lower prices and better warranty's. Also, the warranty doesnt cover less than 8 burnt pixels. Sony says that less than eight burnt pixels is considered normal wear and tear. I hope this helps!

Summary: Great mix of quality and style
Review: I recently picked up this LCD display because my old moniter was seeing the last of its days. i looked at a lot of displays, and i ended up with this one because it was affordable. i was pleasantly suprised at the quality of this product, and it looks really cool. if you are looking at a new moniter this is most likely the one for you!

Summary: Great LCD
Review: Simply a great LCD. Very crisp on both graphics and text--even if you scroll slowly you can still read the text. I don't play many high-speed, 3-D games but the ones I do are handled perfectly. The only con so far is that the screen controls are not very intuitive. Takes a bit of work if you need to adjust the screen though I have not really needed to do so because the setup was super-easy plug and play. Also, the Sony 3 year warranty was a strong selling point for me. I know prices are coming down but this is a fairly new product so I like the security that offers. As far as style it looks great sitting on my desk. Very sleek lines and thin profile. I would recommend getting the gray or black trim as the monitor with the white edge seems to make it just a bit harder to read text and it almost seemed that the screen was running off the edge (hard to explain). The dark color makes a nice contrast as well. All in all I think Sony did a great job on this monitor but if you can afford it I would check out the 17" as well. For me this monitor works just fine.
***Four months later...Still working well but something I noticed from the start but forgot to mention was that sometimes when the monitor is first turned on there is a slight blurring of the image in the middle of the screen. It is minor and does seem to go away after less than an hour but it is visible. Note that this only happens when the monitor on/off button has been used. If I just let the comp log out by itself the monitor does not have any problems. And about my only complaint is that the screen stand is not adjustable enough. Only vertical motion in the stand, otherwise you have to move the whole monitor. Not a big deal but more mobility would be nice.

Summary: Very nice little monitor
Review: This display is great. Wanting a small LCD to use alongside my 18" model, I compared every monitor under 16" in several large stores (I even considered the cute and low-priced 14" Mag, but its image, color, and viewing angle are mediocre or worse). The Sony SDM-HS53 seemed clearly best (my target use is desktop applications including document and web design).

This was strongly confirmed at home. Using this Amazon page as a test image on my 18" NEC Multisync (which I quite like), I zoomed out on the HTML image so that the font size was just below a legible size. I then viewed the same image on the 15" Sony. The type was of course noticably smaller (physically, not in pixle dimensions), but it was also noticably more legible from the same distance. Impressive.

The Sony also had a warrentee period at LEAST three times longer than any other model I saw.

Though a minor issue, I'm not a great fan of the slightly silly swooping style of the support base, but unless you look at the monitor from below the middle of the screen (almost in the plane of the base plate) you scarcely notice it. It seemed more prominent in stores when displayed on a counter or shelf at standing eye level, and it's fine at desk height at home. The unenlarged image on the Amazon pages gets the home look about right. If you enlarge it you can see the sillier appearance when viewed from a low angle. Boy, this is really picky (and besides, other people may love the look).

One other reviewer here strangely complains about a warm screen. Well, as with any LCD, some FRACTION of the 25 watts max power consumption will show up as warmth, but who buys an LCD monitor as a pillow (or pokes the screen to enhance smudges)? As to the "radiation" concern of another reviewer, this seems to involve both confusion with CRT displays and a lively imagination. HARMFUL radiation is a non-issue with LCDs. VISIBLE radiation is what displaying an image is all about.

Summary: modern but high radiation output
Review: This is a very modern LCD monitor. It works well. But one thing i do not like is that it emits some strong radiation. Every time i use it i feel sick afterwards. Ive also felt like the skin on my face, and tops of arms and hands are slightly burnt after using the monitor. The fact that the monitor is making me sick, is causing me to look for another monitor now. One with a low radiation output. Sony needs to redesign this monitor, to emit lower levels of radiation. The levels it emits now are strong and can be felt immediately upon turning the monitor on. This is not healthy.

Summary: modern but high radiation output
Review: This is a very modern LCD monitor. It works well. But one thing i dont like is that it must produce A LOT of radiation, because every time ive used it i have felt sick afterwards. Ive also felt like the skin on my face, and tops of arms and hands are slightly burnt after using the monitor. The fact that the monitor is making me sick, is causing me to look for another monitor now. Preferably one with less radiation output. Ive noticed a decrease in my health since using the monitor. This may not be the case for all people, but it is for me.
