Rating: Summary: decent laptop but a bit below my expectations Review: A nice laptop, but the sound is below fair.
Also it is advertised as having 512MB memory but at least my config. (from amaz) came with 480MB. Also the HD is 74G instead of the advertised 80G.
A very good battery and reasonable display. The performance seems good.
Rating: Summary: Perfect notebook for me. Review: As a college student I don't require excessive features for a notebook. I don't plan on editing movies on my laptop, so when deciding on what to buy I kept in mind a notebook that could perform and had technology that would prevent me from having to buy another computer within a years time. This is it. Plenty of memory and power. The centrino allows about 3 hours battery life and the notebook is light enough that you need not worry about throwing out your back when attempting to pick it up. Do yourself a favor, compare notebook features, then do yourself another favor; buy the toshiba.
Rating: Summary: Other side of the coin. Review: First time review. I really like this computer and find it to be an excellent machine. I bought a second one (albeit with a M 1.5) for my sister because she really liked mine (I have the M1.6.).
Both of our systems come with the nvdiia 64mb video card (5200), and we haven't had any problems with the video being blurry. My sister upgraded from a dell and is much happier with this one. I upgraded from a Hitachi and really like this one.
It's thin, comes with Harmon/Kardon speakers which really do give an impressive sound for a laptop.
In regards to the touchpad, I haven't had any problems with it, and if one was too i don't see why they wouldn't just turn of the sensitive touchpad and use the buttons for clicking.
Some systems come configured with a DVD -R/RW CDRW drive combo. That's a nice feature and allows for limitless possibilities.
The battery lasts me 2.75 hours watching a DVD, regular surfing at about 3.5 hours with full brightness adjusted and the computer at full power rather than long battery life.
Overall, a great machine with an even better esthetic.
I compared the screen at a local store and she outshone the competition in the price range. The only contenders where desktop replacement systems weighing in at 9+ lbs and considerably more cash.
Just my thoughts...Good luck.
Rating: Summary: All that I hoped... Review: I bought this computer for my daughter for Christmas and had to try it first. I bought Toshiba after shopping around and checking Consumer Reports. I have had a Compaq and Sony previously This computer has all most will need, is the right size and price. It is being discounted as it seems to be discontinued, but it is current enough for most. I love this machine.
Rating: Summary: overall good; beware of the touchpad Review: I just got the laptop a couple of days ago to replace my Dell Inspiron 8100 for a specific purpose - to have something lighter and thinner for travel needs. It is lighter and thinner in comparison with my 2001 Dell but the touchpad is really driving me crazy. I already had to go to Staples and buy an optical trackball mouse. The touchpad and buttons are oversensitive to touch and it automatically clicks on the Back button that makes the web surfing quite frustrating - gee, it happened again as I'm writing this review. Even putting my palms on the laptop and breathing on the touchapd seems to engage it and it just keeps clicking on its own. This is definitely a problem as compared with Dell notebooks. The screen resolution appears to be dimmer, blurrier and lacking in contrast. I have very slim hands but if someone has bigger hands and is not exactly used to manual acrobatics, be careful with this laptop.
On the other hand, the processor seems to be working fast and without problems, the keyboard is responding well and the battery is performing nicely. I don't know about all the multimedia capabilities that this notebook is said to have because that was not the reason I got it. The sound is decent, don't look for a pair of Bose speakers though, it's something one would expect from a laptop but not more. As far as the software is concerned, be careful because some programs are linked with the trial version of Microsoft Office 2003 and will not function if you choose not to use the Office morsel for 40-something days. You'd have to reconfigure programs manually, for example I was not able to download a PDF doc from Toshiba website !!! because the Adobe Acrobat did not work properly with this nonsensical Office catch-offer that includes an older version of Adobe Acrobat. Some other times I felt like the Toshiba thinks that all users do not have any brains of their own and everything has to be pre-programmed and very often no choice of configuration is offered and one has to take extra time and effort to remove the numerous default settings.
Overall, this is not a bad notebook, just make sure you have a nice mouse if you're using it at home or violinist's fingers.
Rating: Summary: Phoenomenal Laptop Review: I've had this laptop for a couple of weeks now. Having owned several other laptops before, I can fairly say that this is one of the best I have had the pleasure of using.
It's not the lightest laptop on the market, but certainly light enough for me to carry to class and the library every day. The battery life is much better than I expected and the sound is about as good as I've seen.
My two favorite features, however, are the large keyboard and wide screen. As someone with fairly large hands, it's nice to have a regular sized keyboard that I can type on instead of mashing several keys at a time as I am apt to do on many of the smaller laptops. What I really love, though, is the wide screen. There's nothing better than the ability to have a text document comfortably open next to a web browser or another document. It's the closest thing to having multiple monitors without having to lug an extra LCD around!
I only really have one minor gripe about the laptop and that is that some of the keys are in odd locations. eg: the windows key has been moved to the top right of the keyboard and tilde is next to the spacebar. Takes a bit of getting used to, but not really all that big of a deal.
Overall, I would highly recommend this laptop to those who need something portable, but not diminutive. It certainly isn't the cheapest one on the market, but, in this case, you certainly get what you pay for.
Rating: Summary: 512 MB ram indeed Review: if it shows up as only 480, that means you have a 32mb integated video card. This is something called shared memory.
Rating: Summary: Fair Notebook Bad Customer Support Review: It is an OK computer. It feel flimsy compared to my old HP. When my AC adapter went bad customer support would not just send me a new one in exchange for the broken one. I had to send in the notebook and the AC adapter. Major inconvenience having to wait plus I didn't like the idea of sending a flimsy computer through the mail. I will not buy from toshsiba again because of their customer service. If you are considering a toshsiba then you may want to buy their premium warranty package if want to be treated well.
