Rating: Summary: My first Satellite Review: This is my first Toshiba notebook, I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 that has seen better days, and my work notebook is a D600 (which I truly enjoy). I wanted a fast processor, nice size screen for dvd's and decent disk space. Dell has always been my first choice but now that it is my money and not my companies I had to take a look at the competition. (Best customer support at the corporate level, I have heard not so good for the home user) I purchase the Satellite A75-S226. I immediately upgraded to XP professional to take advantage of the features I couldn't get with XP Home(you can get professional for about a $150-$200 more already loaded on a Toshba notebook; that model # is A75-S2261). I also maxed out the memory from 512 mb to 1.5 GB with a 1GB stick (only one slot) Since I had to get bang for my buck I also tried out a few other notebooks: Compaq/HP - My brother and a good friend have new Compaqs my friends died and my brother says his died, but he got a new one. My experience with Compaq in the corporate world has not been very good, so I had some bias here even though they look sleek Fujitsu Lifebook - I only found one to demo at Fry's 2nd runner up nice performance, features and color for the $$ Dell - Too expensive for all of the features I wanted Toshiba - All of the features I wanted for $1450($150 rebate from COMPUSA) Apple - I actually took a real hard look, but since this machine will be used with proprietary software I use for work it lost out (no mac version)(1st runner up) Pros: Video size 15.4", Fast processor P4 3.06ghz, affordable compared to competitors, built in wifi 802.11b and 802.11g worked out the box, easy setup, and dvd r+w and cdrom r+rw Cons: Toshiba does not customize it's laptops(had to purchase XP Pro) A lot of junkware that uses up my hard drive (trial ware and marketing crap, probably better off with just the OS) single slot for memory; 1gb is still very expensive All in all I am please with my purchase, it still early I will write back if things change good or bad.
