Rating: Summary: GREAT DEAL! Review: "burning ur wrist after a while" is going a little far. It gets warm but isnt as bad as other brand that have the haust port blowing on your hand. All the Toshiba preinstalled softwar is pretty pointless but a great machean all around.
Rating: Summary: Great Machine, Great Value... Review: .... After looking at HP, Sony, dell and Compaq. I went out to buy 2435-s255 model but end up buying this because the price difference ...between these two models. The S255 has 2.4 pentium. But if u are not playing high end games and video editing, this is excellent buy, or as they say "Best bang for you Buck".Toshiba has been making Notebooks for a long time and they make quality. I think Sony is too expensive, HP is OK, and so is the dell. The compaq makes quality notebooks too but Toshiba had better value for the money (my last notebook was a Compaq). I am using to edit occasional digital videos and mainly internet. Toshiba notebook is my desktop replacement. I think if you compare the specs of this notebook with quality desktop machines, there is not a lot of price difference except the processor. But u also don't have to deal with a lot of wires. And about the Hot Spot? The computer makers try to slam so many things in one notebook and they do pretty good job of it; these are small things. Yes it is slightly warm then the rest of the keyboard are, but no big deal. Overall excellent notebook.
Rating: Summary: Overheating not a problem Review: Actually, I have the 1135-S125 which is the same computer but at 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM and 30GB HD. I just wanted to comment that the overheating issue only occurs if the CDROM is constantly in use. When the CDROM has been used for a long time (say reinstalling the software, etc.), you will find that the surface for your right hand is somewhat warm/hot. In normal use, when you do not use the CDROM much, it is great. I like my unit a lot... and I decided not to spend an extra $150 for the S150.
Rating: Summary: An excellent value, but some flaws Review: After considerable research this is far and away the best value currently on the market for laptops in this price range. The computer's strengths are its screen, which is large, bright and generally first rate (I do not miss the higher resolution of more expensive displays), the fast processor and the substantial memory. It generally seems well-made in terms of fit and finish. It is also a very quiet unit, with the only sound being the occasional and brief action of the exhaust fan, and the hard disk (I do not notice the problem of "clicking and stalling" mentioned in another review). Nonetheless, the machine has it quirks. For me, the major disappointment is the keyboard, which is located well forward, beneath the screen. Sitting normally, at a typing table, my palms and wrists rest uncomfortably on the hard surface of the computer. Ideally, I would like a bit more key travel as well. As it is, I find I make more typing mistakes than usual. This may well not be a problem that others will encounter. I would advise looking the machine over at a "big box" store before ordering. An additional issue is that the unit lacks a serial port. Be prepared to buy a USB mouse (less than $... on Amazon.com for an optical logitec mouse) since the touch pad pointing system, as is the case of other laptop units, is an awkward way to control the system. A final point is the "hot spot" noticed by several purchasers. It is there alright, and occasionally slightly uncomfortable, but more normally not bothersome. In balance, I am pleased with the purchase and recommend it. Postscript: After three weeks with the machine, using it on a daily basis, I remain happy with the purchase. I did have some problems with the pointing device, which I now think were related to my misunderstanding how to use it (get in to Touchpad options if you have problems). A negative factor is that in calling Toshiba support I had a 45 minute wait before I could speak to someone -- who was in fact knowledgeable and helpful. I'm not overly dicomforted by the hot spot, which, in contrast to another reviewer, I do not think is related to the use of the cd drive. The only competition that comes close to this unit that I have seen is Dell, which at a sale price is in the range of the Toshiba. All in all, this is a good purchase and I can recommend it.
Rating: Summary: USB Problem Review: After receiveing this laptop, I upgraded it XP PRO immediately. The USB mouse did not work after patching the XP SP1. I recoverd everything and do it again. Same problem. I checked the the Toshiba Fourm and found this problem was mentioned by many Toshiba users as well. The USB problem can be fixed if you knwo how. BTW, this quality of TFT is very bad. The colors in the TFT were changed if I looked at the screen from 40 degree angle. The color is so blue. Overall, this is a very cheap computer. Don't expect it can be too much fancy.
Rating: Summary: Toshiba s1551 great laptop for the money Review: First off, I dont know what all of the fuss is over concerning the issue of the hotspot. I have had this laptop for 8 months now and ive never had an issue with the so called "hotspot." The computer runs great except for the fact that the touchpad freezes occassionally (not the computer, but only the pointer because keyboard can still control the computer). Also the left click on the touchpad has seemed to have gotten stuck. It still functions but does not give the response I need for it, so i just switched the left-right mouse controls. The HD has plenty of space for just about anything (keep in mind its just a laptop). The CD burner is quite quick for a laptop at a great price. I can burn a CD in a few minutes which is not long at all, especially for a laptop. The screen has excellent resolution for a 15" screen on a laptop. I watch dvds not only at home but also on the road and in the air with no complaints on performance. Overall this is an excellent computer for someone that wants a good laptop but doesnt want to pay a great amount. I read the reviews on here before I bought it and they made me a bit hessitent, but I'm glad that I chose this Toshiba. Out of all of the computers I have owned and do own, this is an excellent machine.

Rating: Summary: All that and USB 2.0 x3 too! Review: First, hot spots? I think that the reviewer may have had a bad computer because I have had my 1135-s155 for a while and it has no hot spots on the upper surface. The main pluses with this 2gb, 512mb, 40gb computer (other than those listed already) are that it comes with 3 (yes, three!) USB 2.0 ports when most low end computers still have 1.1 ports (the speed difference is AMAZING) and that it has 32mb of dedicated Video memory when all other companies are still using shared memory in their low end machines. Truly a great buy for someone that needs a good solid performer. BTW, exactly who in the corporate world uses all the features on those $3500+ machines? Really?!?
Rating: Summary: Heat spots? What heat spots? Review: I almost didn't buy this laptop because of several reviewers mentioning issues with a "heat spot" where the right wrist would be when typing. This particular model had everything I needed, and some more to boot, and I knew I wasn't going to do much typing as I mostly use it for electronic circuit analysis which is 90% mouse use. So I bought a ... Kensington external keypad in which to facilitate entering in different component values without having to hunt an peck on the keyboard and burning my wrist badly. For me, it is a fabulous set-up. It works well. Oh yeah, I was curious about that hot spot, so I left the thing on all day and checked it out for myself. Just for clarification for the benefit of others, the heat spot is about 1 degree (fahrenheit) warmer than the rest of the keyboard area. There is just enough difference in temperature that our sensitive nerves can detect it, but it definately is nothing to write home about. In fact, I was disappointed. Where I live it can get chilly sometimes and I was thinking of using it as a portable heater. But alas, it is not to be so. But still, that Kensington keypad is so convenient as it comes with 2 USB ports as well. Because I thought I was going to be getting burnt by the heat spot, I also bought a USB powered fan. Now that is unique! I plug it into the little keypad USB port and the fan is positioned on a flexible, positionable rod and provides enough air circulation to keep me comfortable but doesn't blow my paper around the office. I haven't had to use it to cool down my wrist yet, but maybe with time the hot spot will grow and grow...until it is like a furnace. Then I will resolve to buy a summer time laptop and keep this one til winter. But for now, it's a winner in my book.
Rating: Summary: 3D performance?.. Review: I am considering buying this cute toshiba satellite but I doubt a bit. The problem is - I can't find anywhere any information about its integrated graphics chip performance. Can anyone help me? Just run Futuremark.com 3Dmark2001 and write me the score! Thanks
