Review: After shopping for months and doing tons of research on laptops [Dell-Compaq-HP-Sony etc] my conclusion was that this Toshiba [2435-S255] is by far the best of the lot. With the 2.40-GHz Pentium 4 - 512 MB Ram - 40GB Hard Drive - DVD-ROM/CD-RW you could pay hundreds more for one of the other brand laptops with the same features. This laptop is user friendly and performs flawlessly. [very fast] I am very pleased with this laptop and I highly recommend it to those of you who may be looking for an outstanding value in a loaded laptop.

Review: I am very impressed with this notebook. I purchased it as a replacement for our desktop and so far it was an excellent trade. It is fast and I was able to load all my graphics and design programs need for our business as well as keep our financial records in order with speed and accuracy. Life in Alaska deems that when we travel it is usually for 4 hours or more, the DVD player is a wonderful addition to our journey. The battery life is as stated. Overall you cannot beat this notebook for the price, with Toshiba's reputation for quality it is a wonderful buy.

Summary: Too Good To Be True!
Review: I bought my Toshiba 2435-S255 Notebook about 2 months ago from Circuit City. When I got home with it, I opened it up, and it was wonderful! Everything worked perfect and flawless, I couldn't believe the speed at which it was operating, and how perfect the laptop seemed to be! It seemed to good to be true...now I know it was. It has been nearly 2 months, and the problems have started! At a little over 1 month in age, the computer began suddenly turning off at random points. Now I don't mean having an error and shutting down, I mean totally shutting off. It seemed like the power was stolen from it. I didn't think much of it the first couple times, but it's gotten worse and worse. Now, the laptop turns off and doesn't turn back on! I did some looking on Tosiba's website, and believe it or not on their own message boards I found at least 20 other people with the same laptop as me having the exact same problem!!! I couldn't believe it! I have been fighting with Circuit City and Toshiba since to get my money back--or at least get a new working laptop!! From everything I have seen, they have not been able to fix one yet! So much for the perfect laptop.

From the moment I removed it from the box and plugged it in, I have been extremely pleased. I work from home as a bookkeeper and this laptop handles all of my programs flawlessly. Unlike a previous reviewer, I have never had a problem with the modem. In fact, I do not have one single complaint or dislike. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone in the market for one.

I've had a very different experience from the previous reviewer -- the internal modem not only works, but when I plugged the ethernet cable from my cable modem into the computer, it worked flawlessly without any setup required, which I thought was odd because I thought I'd have to run a configuration CD. But no, it worked from the second I plugged the cable in. The DVD player is great, the CDR-W works flawlessly, the screen is amazing (it's true that in some settings the text can be fuzzy, but if you play with the settings you can get quite a shart picture; also, I haven't had any problems with dead pixels, which is another complaint I've heard), the sound quality is unbelievable for a laptop, and everything runs smoothly and incredibly quickly. The only problem I had -- that webpages with pop-up ads would briefly "hang" the computer when trying to load -- was quickly fixed by a call to the Toshiba service center, which talked me through the problem. (It turns out some of the software utilities Toshiba includes in the standard boot are not very useful; one thing I recommend is to turn off these drivers as soon as you get your system. There's lots of info on this in the Toshiba service message boards.) All in all I'm amazed by what I can do on this machine, and how it's like night and day compared to my old one (a PIII w/128mb of RAM). Highly recommended -- the machine just feels so solid and the performance is awesome.

Summary: Mind-numbing Aggravation
Review: I had high expectations for this, my first laptop, after reading about Toshiba's reputation for laptop quality. After seven weeks in which I was unable to get two different units to connect to the internet properly, I will pass on Toshiba products in the future. The techs at Toshiba, the retail vendor and two different internet providers were as baffled as I was. The verdict: two malfunctioning internal modems. These two lemons cost me a lot of time, aggravation and effectiveness in work and school responsibilities. I just received my money back from the retail store. They aren't very happy with Toshiba, either, at this point. I can't blame them.
