Rating: Summary: Best I've owned, but I have one little problem Review: I have owned previous Toshiba laptops and HP laptops, plus Dell. This is far and away the most capable I have owned. I have noticed a similar problem with the ATI M6 card. It seems like the display will lock up when in "Screen Saver" mode, and I have to do a hard reset. The Windows analysis keeps pointing to the ATI Graphics card as the cause, and it refers me to the ATI site, which then directs me to the Toshiba site for the ATI Mobility Radeon card. I have downloaded the driver from the Toshiba site, but doesn't seem to have kept this problem from occurring. "jsteele" from New York alludes to a website where he got a driver which seems to have solved the problem. It is not on his customer review however. I think that would help. If he would be kind enough to give us the link...?

Rating: Summary: Spend some time on this laptop Review: I must say I have to argue with the negative points in other reviews. 1. Noise from fan. Yes under Performance mode it can be a bit loud, but there are normal and silent modes for when quiet is needed. 2. DDR is 133x2=266, yes it is PC2100 3. As for being slow - NOT. If your computer is starting slow check how many of the "free" programs you have loading at start up. Yes prebuilt computers give so many trial and free programs that they degrade performance. REMOVE the stuff you dont use and dont load every program at start up. 4. Cheap case? I have not seen that either, but I am very careful with my equipement and have not experienced any problems. 5. Hard disk speed is very acceptable for a laptop (see point 3 as backgroud program will slow performance) The good news, at least on mine, is: It is fast, the screen is SURPRISINGLY clear and easy to read. Toshiba has great web site support and easy program updates. BTW new BIOS 2.0 are available. Pricewise it is a great value, watch for rebates I think ... is a excellent value (with rebates) If you are looking for a desktop replacement that is still portable THIS IS IT. If you want a very light, long life battery laptop maybe look at another model. The non-mobile processor does decrease battery life to about 2.5 hours Ok now for the not so perfect. My only real gripe is the speakers, I think they should have a little more output. I have found that they are "acceptable" on the road but at home have a nice little set of speakers and sub to plug in to the headphone jack. (a digital output would be nice but the analog works perfectly fine). Another nice feature is this laptop can be use to play CDs while the computer is "off" Do not hesitate to include this model in your research for a nice, powerful, and affordable laptop. *please note this review was edited by Amazon for pricing and recommended web sites to visit regarding fine tuning this laptop.
Rating: Summary: Great Laptop Saves me Money Review: I've always disliked laptops and I had always stuck to desktop computers. Finally, I gave in and purchased this Toshiba. I've been using it for 3 weeks now and I have come to the conclusion that it makes me more flexible and saves me a lot of time. Battery life is descent, even though its always plugged in. The screen has no problems. It's speed is amazing. Not too heavy, even though it doesn't matter if you are going to set it down on a desk when in use. All my software works great on it. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a laptop. The screen actually doesn't hurt my eyes like the other ones.
Rating: Summary: A Good Buy for the Money Review: I've had this laptop for almost a year. Everything is well except a few things worth mentioning.. 1) The top resolution is only 1024-by-768 pixels and the screen would have been better if it were a SXGA display. (Although, I noticed that working constantly for 4-5 hours your eyes do not start to hurt or water, like other screens. The screen is pretty relaxing for long term work) 2) Also, being a college student, lugging around all the weight is a bit burdensome if you're on the move a lot. Good luck carrying 8.3 pounds everywhere. It surely gets tiresome after a while. 3) Once you get it you must update your ATI M6 graptics card with the new driver. 4) It is a bit noisy but I found the battery feature where you can select Silent mode or Mid Performance mode to be useful when you want your laptop quiet for some mid-performance tasking such as writing papers and such. 5) Not too good for gaming either. Although it might run games like Counter-Strike Civilization III pretty well, newer games fall flat. 6) THE big downside is that the CD-RW/DVD drive is integrated which means if something breaks (Like for me the optical reader), it is more difficult to replace it. Also, only 1 year warranty, unless you buy the extra 3year warranty package. 7) The laptop does look good and feels like quality but for me the wimpy integrated speakers were a downside and just more to carry around instead of actually useful. 8) The battery life is unsatisfying. 1.5 -2 hours on Max Performance mode or 2-2.5 on Silent Mode. One of the good things about it is the solid integrated network card bay which means you don't get the flimsy thing that sticks out and breaks that most laptops have., also everybay is in the back which means you don't have wires everywhere. Also that you can play cd's with your computer turned off. Although I said a lot against this laptop, it is actually a good buy. It performs well for such programs as Adobe Photoshop, Rhinocerous 3.0, Maya 4.5, Lightwave, Programming languages such as VB6 and C++6, and midlevel games such as Civilization3, CounterStrike, Halflife(original), Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 and so forth... For the money it is not a bad buy especially if you get the rebates.. I would recommend buying the satellite. and strongly recommend not buying any Compaq since they made it so you can't go and change the BIOS settings which really is annoying.

Rating: Summary: Amazing Value Review: Like most of you out there, I spent a lot of time doing research, which included reading these reviews. Although some of them made me a little nervous (combined with the fact that I've never owned a Toshiba before) I went ahead and purchased it due to the ...price. I have to say that so far I have been 110% satisfied with this machine. It absolutely flies, the monitor looks great, and it's standard config was way more then I could get anywhere else (and trust me, I tried). I've already done some video editing on it to put it through its paces, and the machine performed great...the 512MB ram and and P4 chip have proved to be great so far. Take a look at this machine if you're considering a laptop, it should last you a long time.

Rating: Summary: Awesome machine..power box Review: Ok, I'll list the raw facts first. Cons: 8.3 pounds ...a tad heavy. No ps2 port. No serial port. Processor is not "mobile" Pros: 2.4 GhZ 512 ram 15" display usb + firewire ports (2) pcmcia ports lots of space 40 gig. descent battery life for the power it pushes out. burner, dvd, floppy,tv out,v92 modem, lan, 32mb video yaddy yadda yaddy yadda yaddy yadda yaddy yadda. I can honestly say that this power house box. It has taken every piece of software that I've thrown at it. Movies are great on it, magnificent display.Very efficient cooling system. I'm very picky when it comes to my electronics. I've researched and compared months and months before this purchase and I narrowed it down to Sony Dell and Toshiba. So since toshiba had the best rebate offer around, thats the one I got and I have no regrets. This laptop also has a slot for a wireless mini pci card when you open the cover that conceals the memory. This upgrade can be added to have wireless internet and network access.
Rating: Summary: It is powerful but also dissapointed Review: Please pay attention to following important parameters that are not mentioned by the dealer before purchase, do not be captivated by its so-called P4 2.4G, 40G Hard Drive, 512M DDR USB Version:1.10 NOT 2.0(It would be 40 times faster than 1.1) CPU: Not mobile,so needs great ventilation, great noise and bulky volume for cooling DDR RAM: speed: 133M NOT 266M Speed of Hard disk: not clear, but be sure very slow(Less than 4500rpm) Based on all above, P4 2.4G cannot show its advangtage because of bottle neck, booting speed is still very, very low if more applications installed. It is really one kind of waste for so powerful CPU! NOT for its amazing price $1299 after rebate, do not purchase it! On this price, however, it can be said to be a good deal.
