Summary: if you want to waste 650 dollars, be my guest.
Review: I bought this laptop, and its the worst 650 dollars i ever spent. it ran flawlessly until the warenty expired. the day after, the whole right side of my keyboard died. also, when you type, the whole keyboard goes up and down, actually the whole laptop. a month later, the soundcard died. the month after, the battery wouldnt sit. when i tried to put it in, i found a little button, that was light blue, which wasnt there before. i pressed it, and my sound worked for 20 seconds. also, random keys fall off, and my whole right side of the keyboard eventually fell off. the only reason this laptop got 1 star is because nothing goes lower than that. your better off with just about any pc. also, this is a MOBILE CELRON. i was a beta tester for this laptop, and filed my complaints on the keyboard and reliability on other OS than windows XP. If you want a laptop, go for a higher end toshiba. this doesnt cut it for anyone. i spent more money in it than i bought it for after it released. i had to buy a usb keyboard, usb 2 card, wireless card, new mouse, because the onboard touchpad caught on fire. so much money spent, go for a desktop or another toshiba/ibm. jsut not a dell though.

Summary: New for the price of used. The perfect Student system!
Review: I had been looking at getting a used laptop when I found my 1115. Prices for used are around $$$ for the features I wanted. At that price you would be getting an 30-90 day warrantee, older processor (PII/PII), memory, 10 GB hard drive. The price I paid makes this a great buy. I have had estimates as much as $$$ for what I paid when other people looked at the thing.

What you get is a fast laptop with a nice BIG screen, and an OK keyboard, hard drive, and plenty of memory.

The things I think that go missing are #1 a floppy drive built in (the bay is there but I could not even find one for sale on Toshiba's web page). An external USB floppy solves this problem in an inelegant fashion. Macs have not had floppies for years and seem to do OK.

There are no keyboard, mouse, USB 2, or firewire ports, but this is a "self contained" system, and really now ... what did you expect for the price?! The missing ports make this a better "second" system than desktop replacement for most users.

I purchased this for a single function: going to school. I'm taking information technology classes and being able to take my "development" system to school is quite helpful. It has built-in Ethernet and modem connections.

As to not having a wireless connection built in...this is a "budget" line of laptops and why pay for a wireless standard that you might not be using year after next. Just slip a wireless card in one of the two PC type II slots (you can use one type III card, but that fills both slots) and use the technology if your choice. For students NOT having infrared and wireless is a good thing. Many schools ban both wireless and IR devices from the classroom to discourage cheating

All in all this is a great system for the price on the street. You CAN get better systems ... but dollar for dollar this is the "bomb" for everyday application use. It would make a great give for the student too!

Summary: Donot fall for the price
Review: I had very bad experience with this machine. Personally, I think this laptop is good for the price but what is bad is the customer service from toshiba. They failed me big time with the tech service. The machine crashes very often. It won't boot saying there is a windows file missing. Initialy i thought it is a virus problem. I installed good anti-virus software. after a month, boom.. again the machine fails to boot. Took it to the sys ad, who suggested bad blocks in hard disk. Toshiba wont accept that and stands on their front that it is a software issue. It is not even 8 months but I used recovery cds more than 8 time and lost all my data. For every problem that they donot understand, they go for recovery cds. They dont seem to understand the importance of the data on the machine. They promised me a replacement after the 7th time the problem came up and it is also sent to the depot. When it cam back from the depot, microphone jack wont work. And the machine crashed with in a couple of weeks. When i called them, they tell me to use the recovery cds as the so called T-techs in Toshiba suggested the managers that it is not a hardware problem. I trashed this piece and went to bestbuy to get a better one, and not definitely toshiba. I got HP ze5300 that is running great. And during the chat with the best buy rep. i told him the story and after listening to the problem with the laptop he immediately suggested that it might be a hard disk or ram problem. Even if u enter this query in google, there are zillions of people who suggest you on what the cause is but it is just the Toshiba guys who dont seem to get it.

I am not saying this is a bad piece. But if at any point it fails, you are doomed. That's it. Dont rely on 1 year company warranty or the Toshiba tech service. Just spend few more 100 dollars and get a better one - i recommend sony or HP. they have good laptops.

Summary: Better deals exist.
Review: I have nothing against Toshiba, although they've certainly laid a few eggs in the laptop market (the last one being a line [5005-S507] that featured a desktop CPU [PIII] that ran way too hot for the confined space of a laptop and resulted in numerous maddening shutdowns). Anyway, this one features a reasonably capable 1.5 GHz Celeron chip as its PCU. These chips are a kind of "Intel-Lite" with rather limited graphics rendering capabilities. Speaking of graphics, the video card matches the Celeron's limited abilities, offering only 16 megs of video RAM. While this machine does play DVDs (and this is a nice feature of laptops, one that can make long trips quite tolerable), it does so with disappointing aplomb (though given its chip & video card setup, this is what one would expect). Also irksome, it has no USB 2.0 ports (though it does have 3 USB 1.0 ports) or Firewire ports; these are becoming a necessity for many new high-speed peripherals. My last issue with this computer is its weight: at 7 pounds, it's quite an armful if you're carrying it too far. You might expect that kind of weight in a more capable, desktop replacement machine, but not in this road-only unit. Finally, I would mention that the company handled the fiasco with the above-mentioned overheating laptops rather poorly: fixes under warranty were available, but no blame was admitted and of course once the warranties are up, those machines will likely become paperweights. However, Toshiba did discontinue the line, but little good that will do for those who bought the bad apples in the first place. Anyway, I think the bottom line here is that there are better deals on better machines to be had, and perhaps from better companies to boot.

Summary: Great System for the price
Review: I have used this notebook daily for two years now, and have for the most part been very happy with its performance. I upgraded to 512 ram immediatly, added an external cdrw, and wireless card. With these three upgrades it has been a decent desktop replacement (though I dont play many games). I seldom turn this system off (usually only when traveling). I would say it has been on 60% of the last two years. I am able to multitask very well, often having four or more IE windows open plus Adobe Photoshop and an office app. or two going all at once. It does max out the procesor often and can be slow at times, but overall it gets the job done. The drawbacks are: gets a bit hot and loud, no internal cdrw, 20GB hardrive to small, speakers not very loud, and the case is very prone to cracking. I have never dropped this system but both corners near my speakers have little pieces broken out and of coarse the hinges have cracks. Two years of heavy use was worth 10x the $600 price tag.

Summary: Great for its price!
Review: I just got a deal for this laptop [$$$$]after rebates and taxes. Before I was using an IBM Think pad 600.. My IBM laptop is better in quality although it is over 3 years old.. IBMs are the best if you can afford them.. However, since I was short on budget, I decided to go ahead with this laptop.

Things I like about the laptop:
1. Great LCD
2. The value.. I sold my old laptop for 300 and I am paying only 400 bucks to upgrade from 300 MHz to 1.5GHz
3. The number of USB ports (3 are included)

4. The battery life is OK (Lasted for 2:30 with normal use)
5. The graphics looked fine.. I played Fifa 2002 and it played just fine.. Although I think 16MB is not very sufficient for all games if you are looking for the most up to date games.
6. Unlike one of the reviews I read, I think the system is stable.. I never had a problem with windows XP and I had the system for about a week now.. I have office xp, Microsoft Visual Studio.NET.. every thing seemed to work just fine.

Things I don't like:
1. No Infrared port
2. It gets a little bit hot.. Not to the extent of "over heating".. The keys will feel slightly warm after being used for a time... It is ok but this makes me wait for sometime before closing the laptop so that it doesn't affect the LCD.
3. The keyboard looks like it moves if you press one of the keys!! :) it is not much of a problem in my opinion.
4. There is no left control key and some keys are placed awkwardlly like the insert and delete!!!

All in all, I think it is a good deal for the price I paid..

Review: I paid [money] for this laptop brand spanking new after rebates. I think it's just great. Nice features, DVD's play fine, runs my flight sim better than my desktop, networks at my job no problem. What more do you want? I've been waiting for a reasonable price for portable and Toshiba delivered.

Summary: A good notebook for first time notebook buyers
Review: I was looking for a notebook which would fit a tight budget (I am currently in University) and at the same time satisfy my need for a moderate desktop. I found one after looking at several deals on Thanksgiving. The Toshiba satellite compares in terms of price and components to any of the deals that I was able to uncover.

The processor, Is probably a desktop processor. What this means is, if you block the vents its probably going to overheat the CPU. Also, on the road, the cpu performs at half the expected performance. This is necessary due to the reduced voltage. When plugged in, you get the best performance possible.

Apart from that, its a good buy and the editorial review will reveal and technical specifications reveal the parts under the hood.
