Summary: You can't beat that price
Review: ...I think you can't find any better price laptop than this.

If you are not thinking about playing the latest video games( video memory is paltry 8MB ) or do some heavy duty graphic processing ( after basic stuff installed, you end up only 10 GB or less of storage ), this will give you the most bang for the buck.

Despite of Celeron processor, the performance of routine daily tasks seem to be fine thanks to 256MB of memory.

Even though you can't add more storage by purchasing a modular hard drive or it doesn't have built-in ethernet capability, it is a well-built and sturdy laptop to own.

Summary: Great Price but....
Review: ...I'm sorry if it's out of stock for you.

I was really looking for a notebook around Xmas 2001 but I had been putting off that purchase for a while and relying on my work computer. Then with recent economic turmoil, I knew I had to go out & find a new computer (in the event my company takes my work computer away!!!)

This computer is amazing! I was initially worried with the Lotus Smartsuite software being incompatible with Microsoft software, but it is compatible with MS Office products. The DVD Rom works fine. Boot up time is fine. It's lightweight and the price is virtually the same as a good quality TV.

Drawbacks would include a missing serial port (but you can buy a simple parallel to serial converter). Gaming might be a problem, but I'm not planning to play Madden 2002 on it. ....As far as a 15GB hard drive, I need to find out where the TOshiba CD-R/W drives are at to do some hardcore backups of data...

PS: Grab that Canon S300 inkjet printer with the Toshiba rebate money. You won't regret it!!

Review: After buying and returning 2 HPze1110 laptops, I purchased this Toshiba. Boy was I really glad that those HP's didn't work! This computer is so very much better than the HP, it is unbelievable that they were the same low price. It is faster and the screen is really good. The sound could be better, but still better than the HP. I really like that I can replace the DVD-ROM with a CD-RW(actually you can just swap them in and out from the same bay). It also has 3 USB ports, one is on the right side which makes it easy to connect a mouse. It worked great right out of the box. No new BIOS to flash, no new drivers to install. (all of the above had to be done to the HP before it could use anything USB or run a DVD...and then it still had problems reading text). Had no problems with the DVD at all. I have only had it 2 weeks, but must say I am extremely pleased.

Summary: The little brick that could...
Review: Compared to my old desktop which has dual PII-500s and an old Wildcat Graphics card, this machine runs about 50% faster. Compared to my old HP 800 CT Omnibook, this machine is two generations ahead. The unit can convert a 5 minute CD track into wav format in about 70 seconds. It can convert the wav to 192kps mp3 format in about 2 minutes, which is about as fast as my old desktop. It runs Mechwarrior 4 without problems. It swaps USB devices without crashing, probably because XP has most of the most recent drivers installed. It plays DVDs full-screen without problems. I wondered why this was given it only has 8mb of memory on the integrated graphics, but according to the Toshiba site, the Intel chipset used can allocate up to 48MB of system RAM to dedicate to video. If you compare this with Dell systems, you only find this chipset in the mid-range units which run about $1400 dollars, twice the cost of this unit after rebate. I also run Photoshop 6 and SQL Server on this machine successfully and with decent speed. The unit is well designed to run Windows XP Home, and with the rebate, I will probably upgrade to Professional; and XP appears to be more stable that NT4 and Win98, which I ran on my older systems. The technology is quite impressive, and the way Toshiba has put the unit together is impressive. The modular DVD drive is big plus should something break or if I need to swap with the floppy drive, or upgrade to a CDRW. The only big problem I've had is sometimes the taskbar icon to swap modular drives disappears from time to time and I can't find where to retrieve it from. The speakers are middling, but running add-on computer speakers or good headphones makes the unit a hi-fi audio device. It's not light (compared to my 4 pound Omnibook), but it's not as heavy as the other units I've seen which are at least 7 pounds. The touchpad works great and can be modified. The battery life is okay for not running DVD movies. If you do run a DVD movie, it will eat up the battery in about 2 hours. X-Men looks great on this machine btw. I don't think there's much this little brick can't do. And Amazon shipped it free to me in three days flat. I am sooooo spoiled.

Summary: I love this Notebook!
Review: I got this notebook for my 13th birthday and I love it. It is reliable(I have not had 1 crash!), fast (at least on dvd, Windows Media Player, the Office Suite, and on older games), and VERY cool looking. My favorite feature is its built in DVD drive. I have to have used it 4 times more than anything else on the notebook. The battery life isnt that great, but I gut it used, so a new one would probably be fine. All in all I like it a lot.

Summary: Extreme value
Review: I have always been a fan of Toshiba notebook computers. Rarely have they been cutting edge, but the ones I have owned have been rock-solid reliable and rugged. I was pleased to find this one at a very good price. It does have all of the features and speed I presently need in a notebook, and is so much cheaper than those with even a little bit more capability that I had to buy it. If in two years I need USB 2.0, CD/DVD burning capability, or some other important new feature in a notebook, I won't feel bad about upgrading since this one cost so little up front.

With the unit now in my hands, I'm not disappointed. It runs well and seems Toshiba rugged. If I had to make it a better unit I would have added a built-in ethernet and IrDA port, but neither of these are deal busters since I already have an ethernet PC Card. Truly no complaints so far!

Summary: All the features of high priced notebooks, very little dough
Review: I love this notebook! Solid construction, great feeling controls and keyboard, easy to operate, and well designed. The standard configuration fit both my needs and pocketbook. Looking for a reliable product I checked with a local used laptop dealer/repair facility before buying the Toshiba. In their opinion the Toshiba was at or near the top. Granted, in choosing the S157, I was more interested in a product that will give me a few good years of service, than something on this weeks cutting edge of technology. Never the less, this notebook has plenty of horsepower, and lots of fabulous features. A winner in my book!

Summary: good buy
Review: i love this thing. good price with all the features i need. the two main drawbacks i've found is weight and battery life. but both deficiencies don't really affect me right now. i don't have a carry case so the times i've carried it around it was a bit clumsy since i had other stuff to carry. i don't plan to carry it around much, but if i do, the two hour battery life is a bit short. i've surfed the net for a high capacity battery that will give me more mobile power but so far i haven't found one.

the 14" screen is gorgeous. i read a couple reviews on the 1.1Ghz version and they complained of jerky DVD playback, but to my surprise I didn't encounter that. i watched Rush Hour 2 on my laptop tonite and it was perfect.

Summary: Satellite 1805-S207 Display
Review: I purchased my Satellite from Circuit City 10 days ago. While plugging the AC into the rear of the laptop while holding the laptop over my desk, the display cracked. (I am very gentle with electronics and was handling the laptop correctly) I was not holding or touching the display at any time. My guess is that the display was already defective and the movement caused the display to go out. I contacted Circuit City since the laptop purchase fell within their 14 day window for defective returns. The Santa Maria Ca. Circuit City was rude and refused to assist me. I contacted their main office who did not provide any assistance either. Toshiba says they will repair the unit in a approx. 9 day turn around. I am unhappy with the quality of this product and will not be shopping at Circuit City again.
