Rating: Summary: Great Tablet PC! Review: I got this Tablet PC last week and am very satisfied with this product. All the functions such as Tablet mode, writing pen, wireless networking, screen display, DVD/CDROM etc. are working perfectly without any tweaking and as per the specification. Battery life is a little short but with aggressive power management, it can be enhanced -- moreover -- its a non-issue as power outlets are on every table now a days. I don't have anything negative to say about this convertible notebook.
Rating: Summary: Defective and Poor Warranty Review: I received this computer and spent two days setting it up for my wife. I didn't notice till later that the battery wasn't charging -- it is either a defective AC adapter, laptop internal charging circuit or the battery. I called Averatec and they informed me I would have to ship them the battery to start, followed by the entire unit if it wasn't the battery. All this shipping on this brand new laptop would be done at my expense and of course would take a long time leaving my wife w/o her Christmas present!
Also during the setup I went to the Microsoft site to check for updates and found many including critical updates. I called Averatec to check if any should not be loaded. Their service personnel said "don't do that, isn't your laptop working already, don't do updates". I explain why at least critical updates are needed and he still insisted updates are not required. He could not tell me or find a list of what updates had been tested or are recommended. Wow, they desperately need training!
Rating: Summary: good for the price Review: The cons: not the greatest battery life, but then again I very rarely need more than 1.5hrs of uninterupted use with no outlets available, and the battery can certainly supply 1.5+ hr.
There are a number of software glitches, make sure that your first steps after turning it on are to turn on the firewall, then get online and download the login fix from the averatec website. Installing other patches along with SP2 can be a headache. If you decide you are going to install SP2, do this before installing other software, that way if you give up on getting things to work with SP2, you can restore the system without losing time spent installing other programs. My tablet does work with SP2 installed, but it did take a few tries to get there. The averatec tech support does advise against installing SP2, just because it can cause problems for various drivers (and microsoft also indicates not all of the drivers are compatible with SP2).
Pros: great price, hardware seems to work fine, and once you're past the initial setup difficulties, the software seems to work fine. I read a few reviews that indicated there may be problems with the pen with non microsoft programs, thus far, I haven't had any issues except with erasing. Tech support is generally good, waits haven't been terribly long, and for the most part they have been helpful
Rating: Summary: Great little laptop Review: this is a nice little laptop even without the tablet features, they didnt skimp on memory or disk and it even comes with a very nice portfolio type case.
the tablet stuff is gravy and since it comes with onenote (which many dont) you can get going right away.
it is also a nice compact size. I am very impressed and cant think of anything bad to say.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful machine for the price! Review: This PC is everything that the manufaturer says it is. I had no problems (only some updating) what so ever with this machine. All the updates are simple to obtain with the patches available from the home website. The battery is a little short and runs warm, but with the amount of money you save through the rebates you can buy two spare batteries. An easy fix for a small problem. I am a graduate student and this machine does all I need. While this includes some complex programs it does not include games. I recommend this PC if you are on a budget and can survive with a good mid range computer. There are better computers, but you will pay another $800-1000 for them. Don't be turned away by the bad comments.
