Summary: Bye Bye PC
Review: ... Great little machine. Through the years I've used Windows, OS/2, NT, XP, and 2000. Problems began when my Windows 2000 kept crashing and lost pages of papers that I needed (I'm a college student). I needed something reliable that worked and wouldn't be a hassle.
Enter the iBook. I bought the 700MHZ G3 (plenty of power, especially if you want to type papers and such - and IT CAN run Photoshop at reasonable speed, btw), 12.1" display, 30GB HD, and 256MB of RAM.
This computer has been wonderful. I plug in an ethernet connection, it works. I want to use a different wireless connection in my school's library, it works. I want to file share with my PC, it works (it's harder to get the PC to let me log into it, but I can log into my Mac from a PC with ease). MS Office v.X is the greatest version of Office ever and is completely compatible with XP, 2000, etc Office versions. Web browsing is a cinch, especially in Mozilla's OSX native browser, Chimera.

And OS X? I'm running OS 10.2.1 (Jaguar) and it is, quite simply, the greatest system I've ever had the privilege to use. It's stable, powerful, runs fast, and is beautiful to look at. With Virtual PC, I can run many of my PC apps AND I can run DOS apps on the Mac that I can no longer run on my new PC (think old King's Quest games).

Some have complained about the screen size, but I think it is perfect. The screen is easy to look at and plenty big. I have a problem with laptops that have 15 or 16" screens anyways because they make them less portable. This 5 pounder fits in by backpack with ease. It's durable and built well. It plays DVDs and burns CDs. I was able to play a DVD for 3 hours before the computer wnet to sleep. The battery functions for 4 to 5 hours if you're just typing and not using the DVD player.

Overall, a marvelous machine and a steal at this price. It's easy to use, easy to carry, and easy to look out. The OS is wonderful. Best of all, it doesn't crash and it actually does make you more productive. Thank you Apple! I'll never buy a PC again.

Summary: My wife loves "my" Ibook =(
Review: And I thought it was for me? Airport and Ibook means, email in bedroom, kitchen, living room, and bathroom =). I can't get her to let me use it, until I have to use it for work. I love the 12 inch monitor, I love the smaller size, I have another G3 computer so I don't need a bigger screen. I just put it in my suitcase, and i'm off. The Battery life is great! I let my kids watch DVD on trips. I've made a little place for the laptop to sit between the front seats in my van, instant portable theater! Nice little CD burner. I've never had such flexibility with any other computer in my life, and I've had many. Mac X is an impressive OS, and with a little added memory (i got an extra 256), I can't see too much difference between my Ibook and the 800mzh G4 Imac. Oh by the way, did I mention, that my Ibook makes other laptops look like plastic toy boxes. Nice looking machine. If you need a laptop, there is no other way to go. Way to Go Apple!

Summary: Took mine back to the store
Review: As a long time Mac user at home / pc user at work I feel like Apple has done a good job of staying just above or just below the PC in performance. I decided it was time for an upgrade and the only notebook in my budget was the iBook so I spent as much as I could to get the best iBook possible.

The end result?

My iBook takes minutes to do what my PC at work does in seconds. I work in advertising and spend most of my life working Adobe products. My iBook crawls at task that I have gotten used to taking no time at all. I found it was not usuable for anything "advanced".

I'll grant you that it was fine for web browsing and Office but that was about it. I actually took mine back to the store and got my money back. Now I am stuck deciding whether to buy a Windows notebook or borrow money and by a G4 notebook. I am not happy with Apple at all about this. I am a loyal Mac user and I don't expect to be taken for a ride. I guess the fact is the G3 needs to be retired.

Summary: A few flaws, but a good buy, overall.
Review: Being a long-time user of Powerbooks and Apple laptops in general, this iBook was quite an improvement from its predecessors. The G4 Powerbook is far too expensive to interest a buyer like myself, however price and features combine to make this iBook a very solidly good computer.

Pros: The RAM is adequate, for the most part. The more the merrier, but 128 MB to start with is mostly adequate. Combined with a 700 mhz processor, the speed is also adequate for the most part in both OS 9 and OS X. The built-in CD-RW drive is also very nice and convenient, though. As well, the DVD player is a nice added feature. It also is a better shape than the colored iBooks since they couldn't easily be stacked...

Cons: This series of iBook is-- or feels-- less durable than the old series. My first time using one of these, I thought, "These feel really flimsy compared to my tangerine iBook..." at least it feels that way. The actual durability I have not put to the test that much. Also, the battery power on all iBooks is unfortunately very low. I can get 4 hours of use on a full battery charge most of the time, although I might be able to get 6-8 hours if I put it in sleep the whole time. There aren't that many other problems that I can think of...

Overall, a very good buy.

Summary: Great Product, beats ANY windows computer by a long shot.
Review: First of all, I must point out all the people that gave this a bad review know little to nothing about macs. First of all their number one complaint is that the processor is lacking the speed as PC's. PC's have 1.8ghz processor and this one has 700mhz. What they don't realize is that Mac OS X is UNIX. And UNIX needs very little operating power as PC's 2 to 3 times less. Also when they say the screen is too small, they don't realize that the resolution on a PC monitor is VERY bad compared to a mac. I have been a loyal PC user for the last 5 years, but no more. Mac's are the way to go. The price is right for what you get. Plus the software that comes with a Mac is so much better than a PC. One more thing the computer is small. If you were to get a PC this small you would be paying much more than this. Seriously, most of the reviews you see about macs being worse and more expensive than PC's, come from reviewers you either hate macs or don't know what they are talking about. I reccommend this to ANYONE wanting a great laptop.

Summary: redesigning my house to go with my ibook
Review: Firstly for those of you who aren't sure if you should get the 12inch or 14inch ibook. I was a 14inch ibook fan, only reason i got the 12inch was because the 14inch was out of stock. i am sooo glad now that i actually got the 12inch. i was worried the screen might be small but its perfect, its all perfect. the ibook feels strong and can handle bumps here and there. i am a graphic designer and actually looked at the powerbook first. but for the price of the powerbook i could get an ibook AND powermac. just make sure you add as much RAM as you can.

i orderd the ibook without actually seeing one in real life ever. once you get it, no matter how many pictures you had seen, you will be shocked at the beauty.

in conclusion, definetly get the ibook, its really really worth it!

Summary: This thing is ssssslllllooooooow
Review: I am not a happy camper. Half the software I want won't run on this thing, and the rest runs like cold ketchup: slow, slow, slow! Skip, don't pass go, and don't waste your money. Think you better buy something different.

Summary: Can't handle Adobe Photoshop
Review: I bought an ibook so I could do Adobe Photoshop and maybe some Adobe After Effects 3-d work along with a few other programs so I could work at home a little. At work I run these on single and dual G4 machines and they run great (though After Effects only runs well on the dual G4).

Well After Effects is pretty much unusable on an iBook. Photoshop is usable, but the time lag for even a simple filter is insane. This thing just has no computing guts at all. It's fine for web browsing and playing card games, but don't try and use any work software on it.

I mentioned my problems to our hardware gurus (at work) and they laughed at me. They pretty much said the iBook is a kids computer only.

I just wanted to warn others.

Summary: Brings the fun back to computers
Review: I bought one of these for my father who had previously had little luck with his windows laptop. Unfortunately, while 'testing it' I got hooked and had to buy one for myself. It is beautifully designed, from the feel of the case to the OS X software and is a very addictive machine. I don't feel the need for a larger screen: I like its compact size and low weight. It isn't the fastest laptop on the block, but is snappy enough for everything I need at home including Photoshop and occasional office work.

If you buy this laptop you do need to buy more RAM, especially for Photoshop and you don't need to, but you will also find yourself buying a digital camera, an Ipod MP3 player and finally a DV camcorder as well.

The sign of true addiction though is the purchase of the Airport Base station and card. True laptop bliss is sitting in the garden surfing the web... this is the first computer to bring the fun back into computing for a long time.
