Rating: Summary: The machine that made me a PC user. Review: For over a decade, I was a Mac enthusiast; I loved Apple software, apple hardware--everything and anything Apple I adored. Then I bought this piece of junk. A friend of mine and I purchased Powerbook G3s at about the same time, and we both experienced the same problem: in a year's time, our monitors started to die. My friend was smart enough to sell his computer as soon he noticed the problem. I kept my computer anyway, because I could remedy the problem by giving the monitor a gentle squeeze. Despite the "remedy" (which was actually recommended by Apple's customer service), the problem got worse over time. I can't tell you how annoying it was trying to get my monitor to align correctly so that I could just plain see the screen. At one point, those gentle squeezes turned into hard squeezes, and when that didn't work, those squeezes turned into punches. I destroyed that machine and I have no regrets. Apple, by the way, has refused to offer any refunds for anyone who has experienced this problem. Among the five Powerbook G3 owners I know, THREE have experienced this problem. This is not an isolated incident. After I destroyed my Powerbook G3, I purchased an inexpensive PC at half the cost of what my Powerbook G3 was. It's been working just fine for over three years.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Design, Good Performance, Great Price Review: I love the design of the old G3 PowerBooks, and this particular model (the "Lombard") is no exception.
This is a great machine for case mod enthusiasts; the computer comes apart cleanly and can be reassembled quickly and painlessly. That isn't to say that this is a cheap case; these computers are built and built to last. The industrial design with the rubber center also provides for some very interesting paint design opportunities.
For the casual User, this machine will meet expectations in the E-Mail, Web Browsing and Word Processing departments. There are more cutting-edge machines out there, but why pay so much when you can get a computer that will meet your needs for about half the cost of today's PowerBooks?
This model also has 2 FireWire ports, making it 100% compatible with that new iPod you're dying to try out ;)
