Description:

Along with its slightly less powerful sibling, the Vaio PCV-W10, Sony's stylish and inventive Vaio PCV-W20 represents a bright new look for desktop PCs. In contrast to the bulky multicomponent setup of traditional PCs, the Vaio PCV-W20 sports a sleek all-in-one, fold-open design that more closely resembles a notebook. Fashionable and futuristic, Sony's latest PC will appeal to those with limited space or an eye for the distinctive.

Driven by a 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 GB), the Vaio PCV-W20 offers solid but unspectacular performance. The unit's graphics chipset, a 32 MB SiS650, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for die-hard gamers or anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics.

The system is, however, ready to satisfy fans of multimedia entertainment. Included inside the Vaio PCV-W20 is a combination CD-R/CD-RW/DVD drive through which users can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the integrated 15.3-inch LCD viewing screen, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 wide aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store their MP3s on the large 60 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the Vaio PCV-W20 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, three lightning-quick USB 2.0 ports for the new breed of plug-and-play peripherals, a fast IEEE 1394 interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Works 7.0, and Age of Empires II.
