Rating: Summary: Some points to consider.... Review: A reviewer pointed to a review on MacWorld, comparing the G5 to an Athlon Fx-51, and Pentium 4 EE, with the G5 losing the comparison...... I also found a review on PC Mag's website, comparing the dual 2ghz G5 to a Dell Precision 650, dual 3.06ghz Pentium Xeon machine, and the Mac held it's own, and even bested the Intel box in some tests, even with a 50% slower 2ghz clock speed. Also remember that the G5 is using most applications in 32-bit mode, as most applications have not yet been compiled to take advantage of the 64-bit G5. I currently have both types of systems, several Windows 2000 PC's, and a new ibook G4. Personally, I'm totally fed up with seeing the "blue screen of death", to the point of using Linux at home for the past 6 years. Windows 2000 and XP are alot better than the older versions, but I still have funky problems with Windows on occasion. No problems at all yet with Mac OSX. Just my 2 cents....
Rating: Summary: Goodbye to Mickey and Intel Review: After 15 years of PCs, I got a Powerbook last year and fell deeply in love with it. Then decided to get the dual G5. At work, we had just bought all the software developers PCs 8 months before and the bloody HELL we went through when we had to take them from 1GB to 2 of RAM was insane. Since getting my G5, I've gone up to 3 GBs of RAM. Having the room to go to 8 is wonderful. I have NOTHING bad to say about this machine, it's the best setup I've ever used, and I have a database loaded on it, doing Java development, and using Final Cut Express and iTunes, etc. I would like to make a few points though.Price: I see NO reason to believe that the price point on this is high at all. I would have paid the same price for a PC but it would have been in the trash in 18 months. With the memory capacity on this machine, I should be able to keep this at least 2x as long if not more. Also, Apple machines hold their value. Go look on eBay for old Powerbooks. It's insane, they are selling for a couple hundred less than new ones. The quietness of this machine is a HUGE bene. For years, I have sat by as my PCs got louder and louder, and the suppliers struggled with more and more fans. Major points for the job done there. Connectivity is superb. And Panther is a joy, no question the best OS I've ever used. Apple's ad campaign about switching is kind of comical. Would be like showing Cool Hand Luke eating a steak dinner and saying he switched from raw eggs. This is the best ticket to a Mickeysoft jailbreak on the planet. Amazing how many developers seem to be hopping aboard. There's a reason this was picked tops for technical excellence by PC Mag.

Rating: Summary: Watch out for the reviewer named "A PC Hardware Fan" Review: First of all, this individual writes 4 or 5 different reviews making completely false statements such as "the g5 was dead on arrival, this is apparently not unusual according to the Apple service centre". Also they claim that the G5 was not the first 64-bit computer, and that the Athlon AMD was. Unfortunately, the Athlon was released AFTER the G5, and it would have been impossible to conduct any preliminary tests to compare the two before the G5's release. They also pretend to be from various different locations such as Cupertino (headquarters of Apple) and Stockholm, yet never manage to write a review under a different name. This clearly reveals their level of intellect. It becomes quite clear that this person has a grudge against Apple, and as a G5 owner, I can assure you, all of his statements are blatantly false. A little research on google will confirm this. The G5 is definitely one of the best computers I've owned, and while several PC's that have come out after its release might be slighly faster, they're definitely not as user friendly. In short, watch out for biased PC reviewers who hold grudges against Macs... there's definitely no shortage of them.

Rating: Summary: Better and Faster Review: For years I was a PC fan and wouldn't even think about using a Mac. But, now I'm a Graphics major, and I can say that any Mac handles graphics programs better and faster than a PC. I have both a P4 and a G5, and the G5 eats my PC for lunch. Every Adobe program runs smoother and Maya runs a hell of a lot better than 3D studiomax ever ran on my P4. PC fans hate the G5 because they don't want to admite to the fact that Mac made something better and first. As a comparison I ran Photoshop CS on my PC loading a 1.5g file and it took about 5-6minutes to load. My G5 loaded the same file and Converted it in less than 2 minutes, without memory shortage, while running a DVD, Chess player, and Illustrator. However, If you're looking at getting a Mac think about what you'll be using it for. If it's just for games, papers, and normal everyday applications, just get a PC. Macs are made for graphic designers, that's why they cost so much. Apple makes them with graphic designers as their main audience; if you're a graphic designer than you probably already know that Macs are way better because their ability to communicate graphics and type to printers. Another upside to Macs over PCs is that a Mac won't crash like a PC tends to do.
Rating: Summary: Overall review Review: From having read all of the reviews and my experience as an owner of a dual 2ghz G5 and a custom built, XP Pro pentium 2.6ghz overclocked to 3.2ghz. This is what I have to add. For a long time, I used only PCs. Then about a year ago, I grew fed-up with the idiosyncracies and virus problems, that consumed huge amounts of my time. Another factor was how loud PCs are. Also, I was enticed by Apples applications such as Final Cut Pro, Logic, DVD Studio Pro. They are first-rate, and offer some of the best features. I do a lot of graphics and video related work so this is significant. As for other reviewers gripes about Apple marketing, I agree. Many of the adds are misleading and overblown. The marketing on it is a lot of hype that is aimed at less computer savvy users. But that is just marketing. The actual product is very well made. There is an attention to detail, in the design, function and integration, that is unrivalled by any PC manufacturer. You do pay slightly more, but the return was worth it for me, and I am frugal. In Summary. The G5 is pretty quiet compared to the PC. In terms of functionality, it was ready to use out of the box, unlike the PC, which requires a more extensive knowledge to get similar performance. Speed wise, it is faster than my XP P4, for rendering and compositing graphics applications. Both systems are pretty realiable. However, I do experience lock-ups and crashes occasionally on both systems. Final recommendations, in the end, it depends on how much you use a computer, and what you use it for. For the gamer/custom builder enthusiast, PCs are still the only game in town. For graphics artists, multimeda, internet oriented users and those concerned about ease of use, I would say Apple is a better deal, and the current G5s are competitive in performance to the best PCs. Another thing that was not mentioned by any of the other reviewers is that OS X is completely compatible with Windows in terms of file transfer. This was not the case with OS 9. As a result, you can take word files, excel, powerpoint, windows media, just about any file type and transfer it to and from your PC and Mac without any problems. As for the negative reviews, one reviewer accused all of the negative reviews coming from a disgruntled single user, as there are two reviews with the same reviewer name. However, a positive review, with that same user name was also posted, and that person mentioned that he was unable to change the user name. So it seems that the system defaulted to "PC enthusiast" for the user name. In which, case there is more than one person with a negative review. But hey, of those, one person gave it a bad review because a third party vendor's software didn't work on the computer. That has nothing to do with Apple or the G5. Another negative review was based upon apples overblown marketing, and not the performance or craftsmanship of the computer, which leaves one negative review due to faulty customer service. If I saw more similar experiences, I would be concerned.
Rating: Summary: Misleading Advertising Review: Here's the thing: The G5 was not the first 64-bit personal computer. It is, on the whole, not the world's fastest personal computer. Those two claims have been made by Apple repeatedly, they are flat-out lies, and have gotten the ads claiming such things banned in european countries where false advertising is illegal. Apparently the US has no such laws. The Athlon FX series is across the board faster, with the exception of RISC-based operations (an average of 5% of all software uses RISC in the real world. The G5 is good for creative professionals because Panther makes it good. It is not faster, however you look at it, than PCs that cost hundreds less.
Rating: Summary: Even pros don't see the vaulue anymore Review: I bought one of these back in October, 2003. I've used it daily ever since and have been thrilled with the performance. It's fast, reliable, and stable. I use it to compile open source software, develop java web applications, and play games, and I have yet to find a task to which this machine was not up to the task.
