Description:

At first glance, the Targus RakGear Bakku doesn't really fit the definition of a messenger bag--at only 10 inches wide by 10 inches tall (when laid flat), it certainly wasn't going to hold the volume of our old bike messenger bag. But we found the Bakku to be deceptively large as well as very intelligently designed.

The Bakku's main pouch measures about 9.5 inches tall by 2.5 inches deep--big enough for a medium-size textbook. It features a supplementary pouch that can expand out about another inch, which also includes several business card holders on the outside. A flap covers the pouch openings and also has a small zippered pouch built in, perfect for the little knickknacks and receipts you collect during the day. The shoulder strap includes two pen/stylus holders and a removable cell phone pocket.

We used the Bakku messenger bag on a recent tour of Sydney, Australia, and we found it the perfect size to carry a few travel books as well as our Handspring Visor and Targus folding keyboard. And its soft sides nicely expanded as we added trinkets and T-shirts during our day's shopping.

Using Velcro fasteners, the shoulder strap was easily adjustable and quite comfortably during four full days of exploring. And the Bakku's heavy-duty nylon material held up well under a few sudden downpours, with only a bit of dampness getting in under the edges of the covering flap.

While "messenger bag" might be a misnomer, the Targus RakGear Bakku is still a valuable and sturdy bag, especially as life's everyday necessities--from handhelds to cell phones and pagers--continue to get smaller. --Agen G.N. Schmitz
