Summary: Good, however not very compatible with AOL
Review: I was excited when I received my Pretec modem. I thought it would be a great way to check email and surf the web without a laptop. However, when I got it all hooked up the only thing I could do was check my AOL mail. AOL doesn't support instant messaging or web surfing for this product. They make sure you can't get on the Internet. I guess my complaint should be with AOL, this product did everything it was supposed to. My only problem is that I am now faced with purchasing another ISP just for my Pocket PC, which I certainly didn't want to do.

Summary: Simple to use - Too bad no speaker
Review: I've used the modem over a year. It was my first accessory for my Jornada 545. The modem is compact and a good addition for checking my personal email when I'm on a business trip. I have used the modem with free internet services and paid. It works well in every case. The only feature that I would appreciate is a connection tone. I've had issues with poor connections that I have to wait what seems like a long time before the unit responds or times out.

Summary: Superb no-frills modem
Review: If you already know how to set up a dial-up connection on your Windows 9x machine, then connecting to the Internet with your PocketPC using this modem is a no-brainer; you'll be up and running within 5-10 minutes of taking it out of the box.

I orginally bought this modem to use with my Cassiopeia E-105, I have used it many times on my freind's Cassiopeia E-115, and now I use it regularly on my Cassiopeia E-125. Despite some of the other customer reviews for this product, please note:

THIS MODEM WORKS PERFECTLY ON THE CASSIOPEIA E-105, E-115 AND E-125.

If you have one of the units mentioned above and you can't get this modem to work, something is wrong: either you received a defective modem, a defective PDA, or you have some program installed on your PocketPC that is preventing the modem from working correctly.

I agree that the manual that comes with the modem is pretty spare, but I didn't need it to use this modem. The modem itself is a no-brainer, just plug it in. It's PocketPC Dial-up Networking that's the hard part, and if you already know how to do it on your Windows 9x system, then it's a piece of cake.

The modem is hot swappable, meaning that you don't need to do anything special before using it each time. Just open up the compact flash port on your device, remove any other devices or cards you have plugged into the port (if any), plug this modem into the port, open up your ISP connection and hit connect. You don't even need to turn the device off and on or anything like that.

Summary: Not just for Pocket PCs!
Review: If you are lucky enough to have a TRG Pro like me, or the new HandEra 330, this modem works fine in the flash slots of those devices as well (Palm OS). On the TRGPro, you may run into some battery problems, it seems to drain them rather quickly, so be sure to have spares on hand, and don't stay online too long. The increased battery life on the HandEra deals nicely with this problem.

Summary: Support is great
Review: Initially I had some problem setting up ISP configuration on my Casio E-115 with Pretec CompactModem. I called up Pretec, 510-440-0535 as listed in the "Company" on their Website, and asked for tech support. I found that there is actually a direct tech support line at 510-580-8339. The guy that helped me was pretty knowledgeable and walked me through the steps of setting up ISP for my email account. They put a little "ISP Configuration guide" on their Web, under "Tech support" and "CompactModem" area. It's pretty comprehensive. The modem card is working pretty well.

Summary: A Must for your Pocket PC!!
Review: Initially, I kept on getting the "No carrier" error noted in other reviews for this item. I called up Pretec's direct tech support line at 510-580-8339 (mentioned here by one of the reviewer's) and got all of the information I needed to correct the error. They told me that having a digital answering service with messages that beep when you pick up the phone can eliminate the clear line needed to make a call into the ISP. Once I saved the messages and eliminated the beeps, I got through without a problem. Works perfectly with mail and the Foliage ibrowser or Avantgo programs. I use is with the Cassipeia E-100 running WinCE ver 2.11 and have since had no problems. Enjoy!!.

Summary: It works well. What a great product!
Review: It's truely an amazing product. I like the integrated dongle part. The modem card comes with a built-in phone jack. I don't need to worry about lossing the cable, or the dongle. I definitely recommend it to my friends.

Review: Plugged it in and connected within two minutes. Instant gratification. Didn't have to install drivers or any other software. Running CE on a Casio 115.

Summary: It works!
Review: Plugged it in to my HP Jornada, filled in my ISP phone, DNS and mail account info, plugged into a phone line and connected. No tricks, no workarounds, no problems. This is a real treat. I recommend it highly.

Summary: Very useful for PDA users
Review: Pretec's Compact Flash modem is very useful for Pocket PC owners. Its small, simple to use, and plug & play. Quite idiot proof. Only drawback is that there are no lights on the modem itself to indicate if its connected / in use.
