Rating: Summary: Not a bad PDA, but I would wait. Review: Toshiba's e740 is the first PocketPC to use the new Intel XScale processor... This processor allows manufactures to build PocketPC's at very reasonable prices, but the 400Mhz clock speed can be a bit of a deception since the bus speed of this device is around 100 Mhz. Compare the Toshiba e740 to similar PocketPC devices that use the common StrongARM processor and you won't notice a big difference if any at all (I proven this myself, but if you don't want to take my word for it, read what all the magazine reviews are saying). Getting past the processor, the Toshiba PocketPC's offer a very slick and attractive design, reasonable expanshion options, and in this case built in WiFi and 64-MEG of RAM. Compare it to an iPaq and this device is a steal... The thing I would urge anyone considering buying this PDA, is that this is the first of the next generation PocketPC's. Other XScale devices are on the horizon, some of them have already been announced to be cheaper than the Toshiba e740. I won't mention any manufactures names out of respect for Amazon, but just do some research... you may find the Toshiba e740 won't feel like such an outstanding deal a year from now.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT PDA for the Money Review: Prior to purchasing the Toshiba e740 I had never owned a PDA. My wife uses a PalmPilot based PDA, and she really likes it. I wanted something with more oomph, though. The Toshiba e740 Pocket PC was just right for me.I love three things about this device: 1. It runs Windows programs, which makes it instantly compatible with both my Toshiba laptop and Compaq desktop, both of which run Win XP. 2. It is easy to use. In fact, I wish Win XP ran as smoothly as WinCE on this little device. I have yet to have the thing freeze up on me or do anything out of the ordinary. 3. I can do MORE than with a Palm or other PDA. The Toshiba allows me to do "real" work rather than just store phone numbers and run a calendar program. One of the greatest things is that I can even use it to show PowerPoint presentations with my DLP projector. I recently finished a great presentation for Copyright protections in Distance Education and I used the DLP projector with the Toshiba for flawless performance. You can't do that with an ordinary PDA.
Rating: Summary: my 5th handheld Review: This is my 5th handheld, iPaq's and HP's and a few Palms. This is by far the best, fastest and best built. This is a smaller form factor than the palm, wireless worked like a charm with my Linksys and Netgear at work. It is just a very very nice handheld, what I have been waiting for.
Rating: Summary: For people who want the best...first... Review: I agree with a reviewer who said that this is a beta-unit, which normally is bad. BUT. I got this unit for around [money] (AR) and for that price, it will run circles around every palm unit (I laugh at people who buy a [money] palm unit) and it competes with the top-of-the-line pocket pcs like the IPAQ or Jornada. With the latest and greatest X-Scale processor with 64Mb of RAM AND this unit has a separate ATI graphics chip, how can you go wrong with this unit? The problem is that there aren't many apps that can take advantage of the processor or the graphics chip. And there aren't that many accessories, YET. Though I got a good deal on an aluminum case made for an IPAQ and Toshiba makes an extended battery. If you can get this baby for around [money], I say go for it and deal with some quirks-hopefully Toshiba will release an upgrade. Even the IPAQS have quirks. PROS: cutting edge processor, cutting edge graphics chip, BOTH compact flash+SD slots, built-in WiFi, great price (if you can find a good price) CONS: quirks (bad location for record button, recent recall on data loss, and you have to be careful with this thing and treat it a bit more carefully than an IPAQ) I say, GO FOR IT! (as long as you can get it for under [money]). There is NO OTHER PDA THAT COMES CLOSE IN FEATURES!! (and isn't that what a superior PDA is all about?)
Rating: Summary: Get one now! Review: 3 weeks ago, I would have told you to stay away. Since then, toshiba recalled a slew of these and now amazon has the new batch. This new batch has a new ROM and the machines are faster and more reliable than before. Even before the ROM update, these were the most feature packed machines available. Integrated Wifi and TWO slots for cards WITHOUT any sleeves (like the iPaqs need) make it the best all around out-of-the-box experience. It's also lighter than the iPaqs and has a lot of RAM and more room for expansion. Well worth the money. If you're thinking about getting a PocketPC, this should be the one you want. I took one star off because Pocket PC 2002 is not the greatest OS in the world, but that's not the e740's fault.
Rating: Summary: very good pda Review: + : very good, the wireless works perfectly. All the cards, SD CF2, the backup of the system to the SD card... the display and headphone sound, very good. Easy ActiveSync and Wireless browse or email. - : With linksys you need to set a fix IP for the active sync to work (easy) there is a recall for some earlier versions. It is related to the battery when you want to swap batteries, if you have an extra battery. Check the Toshiba site, it is based on the serial number, so ordering it here I am not sure what you get, an older version or new. for the recal Toshiba sends you an overnight prioriy box already paid for and return it to you the next day after receiving it!
Rating: Summary: Software needs help Review: Lots of neat features, but has some software glitches which really need to be worked out. Lots of us are having problems with false battery calibrations, and the software wasn't properly prepared for day-light savings time.
Rating: Summary: dude from seattle Review: ok its bluetooth in the european version and wifi 802.11b in the usa version hope that clears things up for u
Rating: Summary: Don't blame Toshiba for Microsoft's 2002 redesign of the 'X' Review: MSFT, for PocketPC 2002, now demands that softare developers build software that does not "shut down" when the 'X' is clicked in the upper right hand corner of Pocket PC 2002 hand helds. MSFT's reason for this is that Pocket PC system manages memory not the application. Once you start an application it never turns off. MSFT manages the memory, and if needed it will turn the application off automatically. You can see this functionality by selecting any application, then click the 'X' and then go to the memory screen in Settings-> Memory->Running Programs. You will see you app as still running and it is just in the background. Don't forget you can always KILL the app here then it is gone until you start it up again. Any software that is Pocket PC 2002 certified MUST run this way. In fact, it is bad practice to have a quit button. OUCH for the database guys. These requirements are part of the validation process for getting the software Pocket PC app certified. What does this mean for the user. You only have to pay one time to start up an application. Apps are instant on - instant off. Windows manages memory COMPLETELY. Applications just do the application thing not the system thing. Most people who use Windows get instantly confused because the metaphor is backwards from the Windows Desktop. From a systems point of view this is a much better way to handle applications. It will take time for users and app programmers to get use to this way of doing things.
