Rating: Summary: After The WOW Factor Ends................. Review: Well I had one, and I sold one. Never again would I buy a Pocket PC, even if the price were cut in half! This is one fairly useless peice of equipment in the scheme of things. MS Reader is a joke, as the version on the PPC is basically incompatible with the format of most books currently available beyond public domain books....and there is no fix in sight in the near term. Music? Even with USB expect long downloads and only acceptable quality..not a true music lover's delight. Some tape players sound better. As to business use...not worth the hype. Iffy and slow writing capabilities, with cumbersome calendar and contact list functionality. And battery life? Forget about it! I give this a 2 rating because I did find the storage of documents useful to a point, especially for editing speeches on the road. Otherwise, the hype doesn't tranlsate into reality. And movies..why would you on such a small screen? I have found the wireless web on my cellphone more versatile and useful -- get directions, restautrant recommendations and menus, news, games, AvantGo, newspaper and magazine articles, even poetry and ebooks in WAP format if I want them, with video coming soon. And it costs almost nothing, as well as being a heck of a lot easier! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY on one of these things -- I am glad I tried, but even happier I got rid of it. I feel free again!
Rating: Summary: Very Impressed! It got me to migrate from a Palm V Review: Besides the fact that HP makes great products in general, this Jornada actually got me to migrate from a Palm V. For all you Palm users, or any PDA for that matter, that is not an easy decision to make. Not only do you have to think about the down time, learning curve and sheer hassle of migrating to a new platform, but you have to cross your fingers, say a prayer and hold on. But I am really happy to say that the Activesync software from MS works flawlessly...I don't think I can ever remember saying that about MS. So that was a seamless process. Compared to a Palm V, the HP Jornada wins hands down. First, the color is exquisite...so sure, you sacrifice some battery life, BUT for everyday use, I rarely ever use these devices more than 8 hrs per stretch before its re-docked and re-synced...so it's a non-issue. Second, the sheer flexibility and options it offers over a Palm V is dramatic. For me, the most relevant ones are the ability to listen to audio books, MP3 files, and I'm soon to download my first e-book. (I am unlikely to use the voice recorder) Third, the comparatively huge memory 32 mb vs. a Palm V 2MB or 8MB is dramatic and powers the extra flexibility. I'm adding a 32MB flash card, and would prefer a 64 MB internal memory but that will come in time. One BIG PLUS the Pocket PC has overthe Palm is that it's great to read in low light situations such as a car, plane etc. Have you ever tried to read a standard b/w Palm in low light? It's horrendous!Overall, this is a fantastic device. Over the years, I've owned probably 4-5 different PDA's/organizers and I think the industry is finally figuring this product out.
Rating: Summary: Jornada 548, available, iPaq, sorry, wait Review: I was holding out for the iPaq, I saw it in a store and then played with a friends and thought it would be the best handheld PC for me. I waited and waited, went to a a bunch of stores and even put myself on a e-mail notification list for online merchants to notify me when it came back in stock. When I realized that it would be another month before I could get one, I decided to purchase the 548. I AM SO GLAD I DID! If you compare the ipaq and 548 you will find that the 548 is actually a better device. The only downside I have seen so far is the screen is NOT visable outside or even in bright sunlit rooms. That stinks sometimes, I wanted to show it off and people remarked they couldn't see the screen, Oh well, I know what it looks like and it works fine in most situations. I have synched it with my home and work PC's and have not had a single problem. I love how it updates my outlook and the ease of adding word and excel docs to it. I would recommend checking out the extras folders in the jorndada CD and active sync CD. Use the transcriber program, IT IS AWESOME! I can write in cursive and my writing is not neat at all, the 548 recognizes my writing better than a person would, and then converts it into text. I wouldnt bother with the golf game, the screen is so small and the frame rate is rather slow, its like a golf slide show. I bought some screen protectors, so I hope it will extend the life of the screen, something I am a little worried about down the road. I made the mistake of hitting the on/off button while re-setting and it deleted everything that I had added, luckily it was only the 2cnd day, but later found this is how you return the device back to factory condition. I have noticed some reviewers were not pleased about the inability to close programs, If you hit the memory tab in the system setting you can close any running programs individually or all running programs. Dont bother waiting for the ipaq, Get the 548 you wont be dissapointed. Definently use aventgo, I download hundreds of websites and they dont take up much memory and are great to have. Thanks HP for a great device, I hope the 548 pulls through, especially with all the iPaq hype.
Rating: Summary: Good for Microsoft fans, but pricey Review: If you're looking for a PDA that is designed to sync with Microsoft applications on your desktop, this is definitely a good buy. However, you will pay for the privilege - as you can tell by shopping around, the Jornada 540 series is not at the low end of the price scale. If you've got the cash, this is definitely worth it. For starters, make sure you get the 548 instead of the 545. The extra 16 MB ROM is a must. With 32 MB of ROM, you'll be able to run most applications without a problem, and you can have several open while still using a good portion of the memory for storage. Eventually, you'll want to get a CompactFlash card - I recommend the Viking 128 MB card. Again, a little expensive, but you'll want all the storage you can get, especially if you're planning on using the Jornada as an MP3 player. The speaker is functional and serves its purpose, but the real value is in the headphone jack. Plug in the included headphones and you get your money's worth, but beware - using the Jornada as a jukebox will drain the batteries, so keep it plugged in if you can. The speaker does work well for reminders, whether as an alarm clock or as an appointment book. The included software is very nice - Outlook 2000 is included, which makes the cost more reasonable, as well as Pocket Excel and Pocket Word. Pocket Money also comes with it, but you may have some problems synching your data if you have Money 2001 on your desktop. I've not been able to get the combination to work regularly. The interface is workable - you can use the on-screen keyboard for typing, you can use single-character recognition, or in certain apps, you can use handwriting recognition. It takes a little practice to get the strokes down, but it's worth the time. You can also record and play back audio notes if you prefer. The size is very nice - it fits in my pocket easily, and the weight helps keep it in place. It is a little heavy to hold in your hand for extended periods of time, though. The stylus is held in the cover, which is helpful. The package comes with a USB cradle for synching to a desktop PC. One drawback I found was that you can only sync to PCs in the same way - for example, you can't sync your Contacts, Inbox, and Calendar at work and only your Contacts at home. If you're just synching to one PC, this is a fine arrangement. Make sure you follow the installation steps _exactly_ - I had some difficulty getting my PC to recognize the Jornada at first. Finally, make sure you get screen protectors with the device! As you may see in other reviews, you can scratch your screen through extended use without the protectors, and they're very inexpensive. Make sure to remove the green film before using them. Overall, I feel that I've gotten my money's worth out of the Jornada. If you're looking for a Pocket PC and have the cash to spare, you won't go wrong with the 548.
Rating: Summary: Question Review: I have some questions concerning the HP jornada 548. I am a writer and travel a lot. I want to be able to use the 548 as I would a lap top, only smaller. Am I asking to much out of the 548? I really need compact and hope it can fill the bill. 1. Is the 548 able to be hooked to an external keyboard(One of the folding compact ones on the market that fit the other handheld pc's.)? If so, does it have to have extra programs or cords to use it? 2. Is the word program something that an individual can use in conjunction with an external keyboard, for writing? If so, How many charachters can be typed in a file for MS word? Is it the same as the word on a home computer? Any information on this would be helpful, as thus far this is the best Handheld PC I have found. Thank you
Rating: Summary: WOW! ! ! Review: I am very impressed with my Jornada 548. It is very very close to a desk top computer. You can type reports, work on spreadsheets and pretty much anything you would want. It is completely compatable with MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel. You can either type it in, at the expense of screen room, due to the fact the keyboard is displayed on the screen. The character reconision has three regions, CAPS, lowercaps and numbers, and I am told learns how you write and adjusts. Anyone who is looking for a GREAT Palm computer, look no further.
Rating: Summary: HP Jornada: Best PDA around! Review: This the best PDA on the market to this day. Ive been to the computer stores to check all them out and the one that i like the most in the HP Jornada 548. It has tons of storage capacity, speed is great, and the battery last long. So if your looking for much more than just an organizer and ure interested in a pocket pc the Jornada 548 has everything you need, and at a great price too!

Rating: Summary: This Pocket PC is Great Review: The HP 548 is extemely simple to use, yet very powerful. I have encountered almost no problems in operating it. I highly suggest Pocket PC users and buyers to consider the Hp Jornada.
Rating: Summary: December 2000's best PDA Review: Notwithstanding that the ipaq has 206 mhz vs the HP's 133, that the ipaq's TFT LCD screen is a little sharper outside, that the ipaq can take PC cards and flash cards (with the help of add-on jackets) vs the HP that can only take flash cards, that the ipaq weighs 6.3oz vs the HP that weighs 9.1oz, that the ipaq's has a 12 hour Lithium Polymer battery vs Hp's 8 hour Lithium Ion battery, and that the ipaq has wireless capabilities, I would still, and without hesitation, choose the HP Jornada 548! Why? Because of the following- 1. the HP looks and feels better (good old HP quality) 2. the HP, being slightly heavier, and together with rubber linings along the sides, fits snugly and safely into your hand 3. the ipaq's silver/aluminium finish looks cheaper than HP's black finish 4. the record button on the ipaq is reputed to be badly placed 5. the ipaq's internal housing for the stylus could become troublesome 6. the HP comes with a 'built-in' hard cover for the screen - essential for a PDA 7. the HP's flash-slot is integrated - much easier than carting extra jackets around 8. the shape and size of the AC adapter for the HP is far superior to that of the ipaq - compaq have forgotten that the whole motivation of having a PDA is its size - defeated if you need a briefcase to carry the AC adapter! 9. both do the same tasks, one slightly quicker, but the difference is academic; 10. the ipaq's jackets (pc cards and flash) do not clip in tight - this could lead to the PDA sliding out and ending up under feet - is it worth the risk? 11. the plastic wallet that comes with the ipaq does not close properly - another potential disaster So hardware spec-wise the ipaq wins hand down - but quality, finish, appeal and design awards must go to the HP - my ultimate choice.
