Summary: Now *this* one, I have to have!
Review: My husband has had three different upgraded Palm Pilots over the past few years and then purchased one of these Jornadas. After seeing what it could do, I experienced my first handheld PC envy. The organizer features are nice, but the memo recording feature and optional compact expandable full size keyboard clinched it for me. This I need. It's just what I've always wanted and HE isn't trading (or sharing it) for anything! Now I have to just get one of my own. We'll be a two Jornada family.

Summary: HP Product Review: Jornada 548
Review: The Jornada 548 at around 9.1 ounces is a little heavier, slightly slower version of some the higher priced lighter slightly faster cousins. However, the HP offers other features to appease its’ users. The Jornada has a solid feel, professional appearance, quick processor, and 32mb Ram while maintaining a competitive price.

If you plan to upgrade this item frequently (one every year or more), durability might not be an issue with you. But, if you are like me who believes that the Pocket PC should meet usage requirements for at least 3 years or more, then this device might be one to consider. Frankly, most PCTPC’s out there do not have the look and feel of the HP Jornada 548. The Jornada 548 is equipped with a nice metal housing and includes a strong built on cover plate (definitely adding to the weight difference). The user gets the feeling of sturdiness and durability that does not come from a plastic housing. The USB adapter/stand is also heavier and more substantial than its light- weight cousins’ adapters.

As far a processor speed, this one is not the fastest but not the most expensive either. The HP has 133mhz Hitachi processor that performs well with minimal to no wait time. The color screen is not the largest of the bunch, but has a sharp vivid image. The color screen is bright but of limited use in direct sunlight. The device does allow for screen brightness adjustment for outdoor light conditions, which helps when there are no other indoor alternatives. The Unit has 32mb of Ram 16/16 split (adjustable) for OS and resident memory storage. Definitely, a plus in this products price range. With the available options this unit supports, many useful mobile solutions can be developed for a business user.

Considering the money, durability, and uses for the Jornada 548 coupled with a good clean color screen gave the HP an advantage over the competition. No, it is not the fastest and yes, it is slightly heavier than the others I have seen are. But after considering the Jornadas’ sturdiness, reliability (so far), coupled with the available features made the device a good buy at [$].

Summary: The Best PDA I've seen yet
Review: I bought the HP Jornada 548 after careful analysis and testing. See i thought to myself when i first wanted a PDA...Hmmmmmmmm.....Well i want the best on the market. So i bought the iPAQ 3635. Well sure it was nice looking but for 599!!??!! Aint worth it. I thought at this price it must be spectacular but its really no different than the HP. The iPAQ is like made of this cheap plastic stuff and it just felt like one wrong move and its broken. Now the Casio....well thats not even worth talking about...but anyway i did not feel that i got my mony's worth. So i returned the iPAQ and instead of buying in a store i would buy on the net. I searched for the HP Jornada 548. Finally i found one that was at a really good price compared to the listed price of 449 it was like a lot cheaper for the exact same thing found at stores. If anyone would like to know the site that i bought it from just e-mail me [...]. Believe a satisfied customer, HP is THE Best. Hope this helps your choice of purchasing the right PDA.

Summary: You'll waste more time than you'll ever save!
Review: If you're like me, you would buy a PDA to add some efficiencies to a hectic professional life. You'd like to manage your schedule, doing away with the old paper daytimer. You'd like to track phone numbers and frequent flyer numbers and passwords; all those things you're unable to find at that precise moment when you need them. So you buy one of these flashy little units thinking you're really on to something. Just think of the time you'll save.

Yeah, right. I was subject to those same delusions. So I went out last Christmas and treated myself to a $500 headache. I have spent more time trying to get this thing to do the things it claims to be capable of than I will ever make up for in productivity gains. There is no way I will ever make up a net gain. At varying times in the device's short life, all features have worked. But they don't seem to want to keep working. One day, the Outlook synchronization will disappear and it will take countless hours of troubleshooting and tech support (even with your IT Network Admin friends who know about this stuff). Then the MS Money synch will drop and you'll reinstall more software than you even knew came with the device. Then your PC will fail to recognize the device connection. I could keep going but I'm sickeningly tired of the topic.

Oh, and one more thing. Forget about ever reading the color screen outdoors on even a moderately sunny day. You'll find yourself ducking down dark alleys so you can look up the address you seek.

To be fair, the one plus: with a 128 MB flash card, I can hold 55 songs. That's a lot of music.

But save your money. Buy a cheaper MP3 player and a paper daytimer. If they'd refund my money, I sure as heck would!!

Summary: Pocket PCs and Palms Too Big
Review: I tried the HP Jornada 548 for a day or two and returned it in favor of keeping my RIM Blackberry 957. I've had every generation of CE device plus a number of Palms (latest is Palm Vx). I've found both to be much too big, too difficult to communicate with and too pull-your-information-oriented for easy use and on-body transport, especially when a wireless modem is added. The Blackberry has a built-in QWERTY keyboard and wireless modem and is about the size of a Palm Vx. The Jornada similarly outfitted with an OmniSky modem and Targus Keyboard approaches the weight of a small laptop, occupies nearly as much space and costs nearly as much. The Palm Vx similarly outfitted is nearly as heavy, large and costly. Couple lightness and small size with the RIM's ability to automatically accept e-mail pushed from ISP POP3 or Microsoft Exchange servers and you've got a near ideal go-anywhere communication tool. Add Go-America's Web access service and you can even browse the Internet.

I appreciate all of the nice features of the Jornada, but trying to build a laptop into a 5.5" by 3" case leads to too many compromises that, for me, outweigh the nicities.

I should note that the screen of the Jornada flickered when the OmniSky modem was transmitting or receiving. Most likely due to the fact that the modem and the Jornada share the power in each of their batteries with each other. That was the deal breaker that led me to return the Jornada and the OmniSky modem.

Summary: To Pocket PC or Not to Pocket PC? That's the question.
Review: I'm hard to satisfy and am not ashamed to admit it. I started my PDA experience with a Palm IIIx, which quickly grew from a convenience to an often used tool. I graduated from the IIIx when I won a Palm VIIx, which exposed me to the joys of being wireless. My Pocket PC experience came from borrowing a friend's Jornada 548 for a week to see if the investment was worthwhile. Here are my findings:

Strengths: The Windows CE versions of Word and Excel are a major convenience, and the color indoors is stunning. Compared to the monochrome display on my trusty Palm VIIx, the Jornada is way ahead of the game. A girl could get used to this. It's expandable, allows you to play multimedia files, and has a lot of other nice features.

Weaknesses: It's too much like a PC. Compared to the simplicity and elegance of the Palm's features, the Jornada makes you work to get things done. I love the ability to edit Word and Excel documents, but I can do this on my Palm with Documents to Go, which Amazon sells. Also, that gorgeous color display washes out and is hard to read outside in sunlight. My Palm VIIx's display is better for outdoors use.

On whole: Both have the same approximate form factor, and both meet specific needs that are dictated by personal preference. Some of us love simplicity, making the Palm a better choice. Others are more comfortable with the PC feel of the Jornada and other Pocket PC brands. I am in the former group. Yes, I love the color and expandability of the Jornada, but want a device that does a few things really well instead of many things in a mediocre fashion.

For features and value the Jornada is a five star product for those who want to go the Pocket PC route. It is solidly built and has a sleek design. Hewlett-Packard is known for quality, making this a safe choice if you're leaning towards a Pocket PC. Me? Well, I love telling men "I have you in my Palm" when I'm scheduling an appointment, and that's something a girl can't do with the Jornada :-)

Summary: Too Bulky - HP made a mistake with the screen
Review: One thing about the Palm. You may complain about the fact that it does not handle attachments via email and that the PocketPCs do it effortlessly, yet when it comes to design they beat the PocketPCs hands down.

Take a look at this HP Jornada. First HP confessed (as it is a company with integrity) that due to a manufacturing error that screen was not going to handle thousands of colours as originally advertised. The second thing is that the design is bloody awful. It is big and clumsy looking. Almost like something designed in the old Soviet Union.

I must admit it's not as horrible looking as the Casio. But close.

My advice to you is stay well away from this one. And any of the PocketPCs except perhaps the Compaq IPaq which is extremely groovy looking.

Wait for HP to redesign their unit.

HP has been doing small devices for nearly 3 decades. They make the best calculators in the industry. I am sure they will get it right.

Summary: Wonderful gear!!!
Review: During my high school years I owned a long-time-faithful HP67 programmable calculator. I was amazed with it. Of course I still keep it as a relic 'cause its card reader is out-of-order. It's kind of a long-time friend for me. So I recently decided to purchas HP67's prodigious grandson: Jornada 548. A very well designed and full of features pocket PC. Excellent style, handsome facia, rich in useful details. It fits perfectly in your pocket and hand. Handwriting recognition is good with HP included software and excellent with Microsoft (free-downloadable) Transcriber -I strongly recommend it. Synchronizing with Outlook is, after a minor avoidable bug, easy, fast and reliable. One more recommendation: if you plan to use it as a portable mp3 player, add a couple of bucks to your purchase and include at least 32 MB of compact flash memory. You won't be wrong.

Summary: A Great Machine
Review: The financial calculator motivated my choice of the HP Jornada 548. As a HP 12C user since 1978, I could not image buying a hand-help device without them.

I wound up with much more.

1. The color screen is is sharp and clear.

2. Syncronizing the machine is easy. I have my Jornada synchronzied to my computer at work and home, making it easy to keep my contact and calendar on both machines up-to-date. I previously owned the 200LX whose motherboard failed. I, of course, did not have a backup plan, so I literally lost two years of my life. That will not be the problem with this machine.

3. The reader is the greatest. I am now addicted to the world of e-books.

Plan to buy a flash card. You can never have enough memory.

I never thought I would say this, but here goes. I could not live without this machine.

Summary: Jornada 548
Review: I would have given it 5 stars if the display was better in bright light. It is fine under incandescent lighting, but fluorescent lighting makes the display hard to read, especially if you are using the HP screen protector. Otherwise, with my 128 Meg CompactFlash card and keyboard, it is almost a real computer. This replaced a Palm IIIc whose built-in battery failed. Only Palm can repair it and the battery alone was [a lot].
