Summary: Cool unit
Review: I purchase a Memory chip for my Jornada and put the whole Matrix movie on there and watched it on a flight. Also put our companies video on another chip and showed off our company on the trip....

Summary: Good choice
Review: I almost returned this thing (Jornada 548) immediately after receiving it without giving it a chance, but because of Amazon's generous return policy on electronics (no 15% restocking fee like my local electronics stores), I decided to open it up and check it out. I must say that I am glad that I did. I had a Handspring Visor before this, which I thought was pretty cool, but [dang], it was no comparison to this Jornada. As far as quality and functionality, I have had no problems. There are too many positives about it to name. The only thing I dislike about the unit is the inability to see the screen in outdoor daylight. It is possible to still look up a contact or plug in a quick note, but forget trying to actually USE the device for much more. Forturnately, I have not had the NEED to use it outside yet, so this has not been that big of a deal. Aside from this downside, this thing rocks. I am beginning my second year in an MBA program, and this thing will be an incredible tool. It is as close to a laptop as it is to a Palm or Visor product, and it is a ... lot more portable than a laptop. (Can you slide a laptop into your pocket? ) I will not waste any time talking about its specific features, because that info is available everywhere.

Summary: GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD
Review: I truely love this doodad. I have no more peices of paper and a large daytimer laying around. Whatever I type is transferred to my laptop or desktop since it will partner to up to two pc's. The display is fine and I can write, play games and listen to music at the same time. Once I get the time to set up the modem and learn more about it I will probably give it TEN STARS. Buy this thing!

Summary: Jornada good but not great
Review: This is an excellent product if you (like me) are replacing a Windows CE 2.0 product (Compaq C120+). The Jornada 548 has a nice, clear well-lit screen but certainly not what was advertised, as we all know) and it has some very nice features.

The protective cover & sleek design make it easy just to slip into your pocket. I have found that a unit is only as good as it is accessible. I take the unit everywhere. Matter of fact I put it in a Rhino Pak & use it to listen to mp3's while jogging.

I also read the bible on it at night & sometimes listen to audible books on my way to sleep. It's great to not require a light when reading. Right now I'm reading "Timeline" using the Reader - very effective for this purpose.

It also comes with a very good calculator that not only does the normal math operations but adds all kinds of conversions as well as financial calculations.

Also, battery life is pretty good. Took a trip to Israel and it lasted about 5 hours until the battery got too low. That was a combination of playing a few games, reading & listening to mp3's.

However, the unit does have some design flaws. There is an annoying click before playing any sound file (wma or mp3)using the media player. This problem was confirmed by HP tech support but there is no way to remedy the problem.

Once turned on the screen takes a few seconds to gain full clarity & light. This is somewhat annoying but it probably saves battery life, which is important to me.

Also, the unit is impossible to see in any direct light at all. There are times when I'd like to be able to use the unit outdoors but that is virtually not possible. You can try to shield the light with something but you still cannot see the screen enough to make it functional.

The character recognition program is decent but not great. I takes notes in church & find that it is faster to type using the screen's keypad, because it makes too many errors.

I have had some problems with the unit. For two days the touch screen would not function at all even after a hard beboot. Tech support could not solve the problem but it finally began to work again after a few hours of toil. This makes me nervous because it could happen again. Just make certain that you use an external CP to backup your unit after you get it how you like it. Then I transfer the backup file to my PC using a CF reader.

All in all, the unit is so far superior to the units of the past and that's why it was worth the purchase. I looked closely at the Casio & Compaq but the casio & Compaq had no hood & the compaq did not have a permanent CF port built in to the unit. I'd have gone with the Compaq if it been built with the CF port. Also, the Compaq & Casio have a few extra buttons that would make games more functional.

HP's next version will undoubtedly make me wish I had waited but for the meantime I am more happy than not. I could not give it 4 or 5 stars because it did not exceed my expectations. Good luck with your purchase.

Summary: Better than Palm - Better than Psion
Review: I've owned a Palm V and a Psion 5 and neither hold a candle to this baby. Small, sleek, brilliantlymulti functioned, and seamless connectivity to your desktop. It has great handwriting recognition (no more new alphabets to learn a la Palm) - clear color display - neat cover to protect the screen - and lasts all day on one charge.

Summary: Excellent Integrated Device for Most Needs
Review: I can trade in my Palm, my notebook PC, my RIO MP3 player, my Panasonic digital voice recorder, my books on tape cassettes...all for my one PocketPC. Awesome.

It's fast, colorful, functional and packed with value. Whether I am using Outlook for my calendar and contacts or email, listening to MP3's, reading a book, listening to an audiobook in my car with the cassette adapter, taking notes at a meeting, recording voice notes while I drive...it does it all.

I'm very happy with this phenomenal package.

Summary: 2nd Times The Charm
Review: I bought a Casiopeia E-100 but gave up using it because 1) the handwriting recognition was horrible and 2) the thing ate batteries like candy. I intended to forgo PDAs (without keyboards entirely) opting for the PDA/laptop with keyboard, the Jornada 820. Unfortunately, the Jornada 820 was discountinued so I took a chance and bought the Jornada 548.

What a world of difference. The handwriting recognition is excellent... I recharge my batteries every couple days by plugging my new PDA into the wall. The thing has a wealth of applications. The range of accessories is excellent. Everything from memory storage cards to a fold-up keyboard coming out in August. The navigation is fairly intuitive and you can download MP3s and use the thing as a walkman.

I'm not the type to endorse things very often, but the Jornada 548 rocks!

Summary: I wouldn't recommend it until they fix...
Review: I own the Jornada 420 and I like it better than Palm. However, I would not recommend upgrading to the Jornada 548 until they fix the following problems: 1) The stylus in Jornada 420 is excellent, but the stylus for Jornada 548 is terrible. I wish the Jornada 548 could hold the stylus from Jornada 420 because it is a lot better. 2) If you want to use the Jornada for calendaring and contacts (aren't these the two most frequently used features of a hand-held device?) then I would wait until HP fixes and changes the Jornada 548's Initial Window to include these two items. Currently, their Initial Window has "Reader", "Inbox", "Word", etc. I don't know about you, but I will never use Reader, Inbox and Word, as often as I use my Calendar and Contacts. I am very disappointed with their Initial Window because it's inefficient -- I think it should have been made to optimize for quick access to the two most likely used features of a hand-held device, which I believe are access to Calendar for schedules, meetings & appointments and access to Contacts. If there's a way to reconfigure the Intial Window (to include Contacts & Calendar icon just like they have "Reader" and "Inbox" icons), I would like to know. It doesn't appear to be reconfigurable, so I think this product is stuck with this level of inefficiency.

However, the Jornada is much better than Palm because it seemlessly integrates with Outlook, which could be the number one reason for purchasing the Jornada. I would highly recommend Jornada because of its WinCE OS over any Palm. Having a WinCE OS essentially guarantees a seemless integration with Windows Applications (like Outlook) and this is very important in a fast-paced job where effective, easy and efficient integration between Outlook on your Jornada and Outlook on your PC is critical -- the Jornada does this extremely well and better than other products, which is why I purchased it.

If HP fixes the 2 items mentioned above, this would be the most efficient product on the market. Until they do this, it's an "okay" product (if you're focused on efficiency) but it could have been better. It's still better than the Palm though.

Summary: PDA dependent engineer very pleased with Jornada...
Review: I just received my Jornada 548 a few days ago. After just a few hours everything was set-up and I had explored most all the features. I have an early PalmPilot and a Palm III (which I broke - ergo my Jornada purchase), and I liked them a lot, but the Palm is not in the same league as this Pocket PC. I was drawn to the audio books, e-books and color display features, but I am also very happy with the MS programs. I do recommend purchasing the following: case, screen covers, pen replacements and a CompactFlash card. I am an engineering technical manager and I feel that the Jornada 548 will do well to meet my PDA requirements. (BTW: After downloading just a few items, I am now glad to have purchased the 32MB Jornada.)

Summary: Let me see, Loving it!
Review: I have been using the 548 for about a month and a half now. I am truly impressed. The synch is working great with Outlook, no problems up and downloading word/excel files. The 548 has stayed up and running, no glitches, truly outstanding device. Turned in my Palm VII for it, no questions asked.
