Rating: Summary: Solid as a rock Review: I hope my title will not discourage any readers, but this is exactly what I mean about JHP Jornada 548. I do admit that I was tempted by high-quality features of iPaq (32/64 MB, great display, better battery life and weight), but Jornada is simply cheaper..., more convenient (metal display cover and integrated Flash card slot) and more professional looking. I really do not want to repeat so many others stating the same things. After so many months, I finally succeeded to save enough money for one of these devices, and I made my move. HP 548 was everything I wanted. It was fast enough, with good display, had safety features (metal cover), very reliable battery and extensive software. Only downside I could find is non-existence of an utility to help you close the running programs, but you can easily correct this problem by downloading some of the freeware applications. For those who believe that these units should be easy to carry around, I would like to remind you that iPaq, which weighs less than HP Jornada, grouped with Sleeve Jacket weighs more than integrated Jornada and absolutely violates the concept of palm-top devices. All this and many more little details are why I highly recommend this unit. You can't go wrong with HP.
Rating: Summary: Quick shipment, but now there is a problem w/no response. Review: The product was shipped quickly. But now I cannot get the Pocket PC to connect to any PC. I have emailed the seller numerous times about this and they will not respond to me. Amazon is abolutely no help either, they will not do anything to help me. If I ever do get the problem fixed, I will change the bad rating for the seller.
Rating: Summary: Worth the tradeoffs with the promotion Review: The Jornada 548 has over a month on it, purchased from an office supply chain during a $... discount offer when keyboards were given by HP. Sweet deal for $.... With a 128 MB SanDisk CF (including mfg. current rebate offer) and another cradle/power supply from Amazon, the total investment remains below $.... I carry no peripheral clipons, boots, or adapters, and this was a major factor in device selection. The 548 turns on when you push the button, all three writing entry modes work as specified, and the keyboard accessory is quite functional. The synch with supplied Outlook 2000 really does work, and there are no real annoyances. Microsoft's goofy "Club Pocket PC" really turns out to be another bargain in disguise, as another $... gets you stickers, information and links, a T-shirt with a pocket, and a copy of HanDbase for PPC, which is simple and functional. The best feature is quality and consistent function. The weakest features are limited battery life (including quick tail-off typical of lithium cells) and limited screen brightness, which are inferior to current Casio and Ipaq offerings. I have the feeling that HP has something in the wings that I'll wish I'd waited for, but the 548 is doing everything I expected so far. Things that work are great. The 548 is worth it to me just because I don't have to wait for bootups to get simple things done. I will be truly happy when I discover the "killer ap" for these toys, but it's quite satisfying even now.
Rating: Summary: Excellent value - great organizer Review: I recently replaced an aging Palm IIIx with the Jornada 548, and what a great choice! I'll start with the two cons I have about the 548 - it's a bit on the bulky and heavy side compared to other Jornadas and PDAs in general. And the record button could be moved down or to the right side, I always seem to mistakenly press it and end up with some muffled sound recordings. On the positive side (and there are many!), the customizable screens and buttons are fantastic. If you're not happy with the pre-determined buttons on your home menu, then simply change them - really, it's that easy. The MP3 player is relatively simple to figure out and download to, and the sound is ok for a PDA; not top quality, but good enough for voice recordings. The recorder does copy sounds as MP3 files, so it can take up a lot of space (the ease of adding memory is a bonus). The feel of the casing is great, I feel like I could drop this and it would bounce right back (though I haven't performed that stunt quite yet!). It has a nice rubber-ish grip on the side that is quite comfortable to hold. The setup is quick and easy, especially if you sync to 2 different machines. Overall, this is in my opinion the best PDA you'll find for [the price]. Forget the Palm - go with the Jornada!
Rating: Summary: Jornada 548 replaces Visor Deluxe Review: I started with a Compaq CE 1.0 device some years ago. Shortly after I upgraded to a Palm III, then moved to the Visor Deluxe in March, 2000. I really enjoyed the flexibility of the Visor add-ons, but felt limited on the software side. The Jornada has been wonderful! Syncing capabilities are right there with the Visor, though the option settings aren't as clearly defined as they could be. Writing recognition is head & shoulders above the Visor, the word completion option is a tremendous time saver. The display doesn't hit the 16 bit category, but it is still impressive. Outside it is difficult to view without fiddling with the settings. The display catches a lot of attention from onlookers. Software is a huge advantage. Pocket Word & Pocket Streets have been a huge help(this critique was written in Pocket Word). Small display size makes the Excel version difficult to use. The inclusion of Outlook 2000 is an added bonus. I look forward to adding Pocket Powerpoint. I was very concerned about the lack of flexibility on the power system (the Visor uses AAA's), however the Lithium Ion battery holds it's own very well. I am getting well over six hours of operation time between charges. I installed a 56k modem and the results have been great. Setup was a snap & operation speeds have been impressive. Power adapter is pretty much required with modem use. There is a noticeable lag in program opening compared to the Palm OS, but nothing that's going to cause me heartburn. Though there are a few disadvantages with the HP and CE 3, they are far outweighed by the long list of advantages. It is a definite buy.
Rating: Summary: The Jornada is great--as long as there's an outlet nearby Review: I generally agree with the 4 and 5 star reviews on the HP Jornada, however... I'm puzzled by the lack of complaints about the Jornada's power limitations--am I the only one who gets annoyed about having to recharge the darn thing every 6-8 hours? I've been using the 545 (which I believe is identical to the 548, less 16 MB of RAM) and I find the short battery life frustrating. While there's no problem making it through the average work day, you need to be diligent about recharging every single night. Don't expect to pass the time on an international flight by playing Golf and listing to mp3's--you'll be reading the airline magazines through the remaining two thirds of the flight. Oh yeah, I'm not using any flash cards either. The manual warns that these can rapidly drain the battery, particularly modem cards...yikes. Another worrisome tidbit: the Jornada's main battery is it's only battery. So if you don't recharge it in time (within 3 days after a low-battery shut off) you'll lose everything in ram (e.g. contacts, to do's, appointments, additional programs, ...) Seems like I'm working for the Jornada rather than the other way around.
Rating: Summary: HP Jornada 547/548 Review: Great PDA, beats out any palm type device by a longshot in capability expandability. Only draw back is ever shrinking selection of aftermarket goodies for it due to the processor.
Rating: Summary: No Pocket PC 2002 Review: For its day the 548 was a stunning piece of equipment. I have been a Jornada 548 owner since week 1 of its release. I am disappointed to report, however, that the older Jornada models have been left in the dust by the Compaq-HP merger. Ipaq'ers get an upgrade from the Pocket PC OS to the newer, marginally better Pocket PC 2002 OS. Although the OS is only moderately more useful, it is aesthetically more pleasing and is symbolic of the fact that the 548 will receive little attention or support from HP/Compaq ever again. Also, the lack of back up batteries is quite a nuisance when you lose all drivers and software because you forgot to recharge the 548. Furthermore, and this may be my error, I never found a car charger for it which would have been useful given the adequate, but not stellar battery life. I would suggest buying a newer piece of equipment, its worth the dough.
Rating: Summary: Good product for my needs Review: The HP Jornada is easy to use and learn. I am already receiving infared contacts and files from my clients. As soon as I learn how to transmit infared files, my work productivity will increase. I do a lot of file sharing and versioning with my colleagues. Getting my calendar synched will be very helpful too. I am a first time buyer of used goods on Amazon - and I am glad I took the chance. Only one disappointment: shipping took much longer than I anticipated (11 days instead of 1-2).
