Rating: Summary: Good price, but... Review: While the Axim is probably the most affordable Pocket PC on the market today, anyone who is serious about quality should look at the Compaq iPAQs (especially the 3955). Sure, they cost about a hundred and fifty bucks more, but with the 3955 you get a much brighter, crisper screen, greater durability, a whole assortment of awesome programs, and best of all: you don't have to worry about the terrible customer service at Dell.
Rating: Summary: Far better deal than Compaq Review: After waiting too long for Compaq Pocket PCs to come down in price, Dell reall delivered with a bang! Conpaq will definitely have to rethink their pricing schedules to compete with Dell. I never dreamed how much I would use it until I had my schedule set up to update automatically with Outlook 2002. Works like a charm. Also, AdvantGo, email, eBook reader and with the additional purchase of Pocket Streets, I use mine every day! Great buy!
Rating: Summary: My first PDA Review: This is a great PDA. It has plenty of bells and whistles for both the casual user and the power user. I wasn't sure I would use this when I first got it, but I find more and more uses for it every day. I just wish there were more accessories for ther Axim. Since it's new, I'll just have to wait.
Rating: Summary: Best Pocket PC Ever Review: I have had this for about three weeks and think it is great, have had Palm M505 and have tried out Hp Jornada 568 also almost all of the Ipaq's and have not found any that match this one,the combination of a CF card slot and a SD card slot is great, also it is the most inexpensive to have a intel Xscale 400MHZ processor. There are so many thing on this I could not mention them all you really need to try one out,I am not at all suprised to see Dell put one over on HP and the rest of the high priced crooks.
Rating: Summary: The Best Pocket PC so far Review: I've owned iPaqs (3670, 3850) and Jornadas (690, 720 and 2 568) and I've never been as satisfied with a device as I am with my Axim, and for it's price, you can't find a better deal, it doesn't have the Wireless system integrated as the new iPaqs but it's got 2 slots so you can buy a wireless CF card for $... dollars and still have the MMC/SD slot for memory, and still save more than $... against the new Ipaq. The screen is great, with the other devices dust din't take more that 2 days to get into the display and that was annoying because you can't remove it, with this device that doesn't happen. The only problem I see it, is the missing of a cover to protect the screen, anyway you can buy a Aluminum case instead of leather and keep it 100% safe. So overall it's the best Pocket PC in the market, it's a Dell.
Rating: Summary: 5gb drives? not on this Review: This is just my humble, experienced opinion with PocketPCs, I do not own this Dell because I did some extra thinking ...I used to always tell people to avoid Compaqs but in the PocketPC niche there is just no beating an IPAQ. The reason isn't the initial price (Dells are cheaper to get the catch-up marketshare) or the processors (All new ones worth buying are 400MHz) but the expandability. After you own your pocketpc for a few days you realize that the brightest screen and the most flexible expandability are the things that are really the most important. Ipaqs have been around a long while and the case format is a standard. Because of that the expansion options are not limited to CF & SD cards as are the options for Toshibas and Dells. I am right now watching a widescreen movie on my 3835, jitter-free stereo MPG1 ripped with a $49 Linx usb cable. It's rolling off of my 2GB Toshiba PCCard drive ($70, $150 for a 5GB). This is a PCMCIA card not a CompactFlash, the largest CF drive you can get is the MicroDrive which is 1GB for $350. I looked real hard at the Dell when they announced that they were dropping the PalmOS for PocketPC2002, but without all the options (esp the PCCard sleaves) it became just another Win-PDA, not a "I can use this for everything". Maybe Dell will eventually offer more, but right now there are years of sleaves for Ipaq and HP has said that they will stick with the case style so that all older sleaves will continue to be fully useful (I heard a 5 Year pledge on a newsgroup). If this is your first PocketPC, keep this in mind or I guarantee in a few weeks you will be wishing you had not jumped at the lower base cost. 3970/75s or 5450/55s are worth a harder, closer look. I'm moving up to a 3975 to get the brighter screen, and if I wasn't so into movies then the 3835 would still be my 100% killer. And if you're thinking PalmOS because there seem to be more software titles? Watch out .. Microsoft wants the market and so they are releasing the .net CompactFramework for developers in April; That makes coding the PocketPC a breeze compared to developing for Palm, this is going to make the amount of titles available for PocketPC soar in 2003
Rating: Summary: Not A Newcomer To Pocket PCs Review: I've owned the ipaq 3835, the hp jornada 568, the cassiopia be-300, and checked out the toshiba's. DUDE I'M GETTING A DELL ! If You Spend $300.00 On A Palm OS You're Not Only A Nut, You're An Ill-Informed NUT.As Are Those Paying $600+ For P/PCs.
Rating: Summary: Best PPC for its price! Review: This is my first PPC, but my 2nd PDA, and I love it. My other one was a Palm IIIxe, and when the screen shattered because I dropped my backpack, with all my books, right onto it. So I got another one, but I upgraded to a PPC. The new xScale processor that this PPC has, by Pentium, only uses as much processing power as it needs, which helps to conserve battery power. The Axim is bigger and heavier than many PPCs, but it's still a handheld, and I usually like my electronics to be heavy, because to me, it gives me a sense of security that it is sturdy. The Axim has rubber grips on the side, so that you'll have a hard time dropping it, and you can get a good grip on it. It has a microphone for recording notes, and even has a button on the side that you can use to dictate reminders to yourself quickly if the need arises. There is an included speaker, but if you turn the volume all the way up, the sound quality is not the best, so I recommend using head phones if you plan to listen to a lot of music on your Axim. The Axim has two expansion slots, a compact-flash and a secure-digital slot. I think it is great that it has both, because I could use a compact flash modem and still have increased memory space using the secure digital card. The Axim is also only about half as much as many other high-end PPCs that are currently on the market. It's RAM and ROM are sufficient if you only plan to use included programs, but I recommend expanding with a memory card for keeping pictures, MP3s, and other files on your PPC. The few things I don't like about the Axim are that it came with only one stylus, which I will probably lose before I can buy more from Dell, the case included with the Axim is really cheap and not worth using (The Axim can turn itself on while in the case), and that there aren't very many acessories available for the Axim at this time. Since my last PDA's screen broke, I am working hard to find a good screen protector for my Axim. I have heard that Dell plans to release numerous acessories, including a keyboard for the Axim in the near future, which I hope will indeed happen. In summary, if you're looking for a low-priced, high-end pocket PC, then go for the Axim! I would buy another one if this broke, and as it's looking, it won't.
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate PocketPC Device, Dell Now Setting the Pace Review: After 2 years of working with iPaq's at work as well as using one personally, I was leary of Dell's entry into this category. Our company used Dell pc's but we were satisfied with the iPaq's. Until Dell's Axim X5 was shipped to me for review at work. It is awesome. Despite noise about it's bulk, it is the same size as the old ipaq's with many more features. When you add a CF jacket, as we need to do for wireless, the ipaq is the size of a sqaure big mac and no longer fits into your pocket (yet they still call it a pocket pc). The Axim excels in design, form and features. I didn't mention they are roughly HALF THE PRICE of the iPaq's we've been buying. And the Dell comes with a next business day replacement warranty - this is very, very nice (as anyone who has had a dead handheld before and had to send it in for service knows...) Buy the Dell Axim, the best value - Palm or PocketPC - I've seen - ever. I love mine!
