Rating: Summary: Simply Outstanding Review: The only reason I gave this product five stars is because Amazon's scale doesn't go up to ten. I've used a Palm, Palm III, and Palm V, but the Handspring Visor beats Palm like a drum. Handspring's plug-in module design and 100% Palm OS make it a superior platform. Some of the modules available include a dictionary, universal remote control, voice recorder, backup module, PDA, and CompactFlash or SmartMedia memory expansion cards. I spent the better part of two weeks researching hand held devices before making this purchase. I looked at Windows CE as well as Palm based devices, and the Handspring Visor Prism won hands down. Handspring was founded by the inventor of the Palm, along with all of his original Palm crew. They took a great idea and made it better. Handspring licensed the Palm operating system so the Visor would run all of the apps already written for that OS. You could probably count the number of really good Windows CE apps on the fingers of one hand. The Prism's 16 bit color display beats the tar out of the competition's 8 bit display. If you're looking for a hand held computer, choose a Handspring Visor. If you're looking for a color display, choose a Handspring Visor Prism. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Screen hangs and freezes Review: Bought this Prism a week ago.... Screen hangs and freezes, and the whole unit could not be reset for several days. Tech support is NOT toll free. I like the screen brightness and color, but I wish I'd bought the M505, and may still return it.
Rating: Summary: Prism Display Makes All the Difference Review: My Prism replaces my Palm V, and I'd never go back. The display is phenomenal. Once you use the Prism, you realize all the contortions you went through to view the Palm V display. Worth the switch.
Rating: Summary: Tremendous device helps me on the job and with my business Review: I spent about three weeks relentlessly researching which handheld device I would use to supplement my two desktop systems that I keep in either residence.Because of operating system stability issues (Windows CE) I decided against the more appealing Compaq Ipaq. I like simple, hard working devices and the Palm OS is almost Zen like in it's simplicity and usability (read: reliable). For the last year I have been using a Motorola P935 pager and in doing so, convinced myself that I could do without a full size laptop becuase I needed extreme portability, but I was missing functionality (wireless web/email access). It sends email, but only up to 500 characters and sometimes that is not enough. I use this device extensively both on the job and off. While travelling from Texas to the East Coast I work 80-100 hours a week, run a small online business, manage my investments and keep track of an enormous amount of personal information. Coupled with the Omnisky Minstrel Wireless Modem the Handspring Prism is a true champion for power packed portability. I find the coverage in Houston and the Boston/Providence/Narraganset area to be more than adequate. The TO DO list is great and the repeatable function is great for reminders such as filling out time sheets with straight time during the week and time + 1/2/double time on the weekends. It also interfaces with the calendar so that you can view your open items along with scheduled times. I do not synchronize very often, but when I do it seems to work well. I use a 8mb backup module all of the time because I have had a lockup that caused me to lose all of my data, but this was once and it was for a very avoidable mistake: I was synchronizing with Omnisky over the wireless connection to update my software and lost the connection, corrupting the files. After the backup, I accomplished this same task several times but under controlled conditions (not moving around). There are a lot of great games for the Prism and the color looks great. I don't play many games, but I do enjoy Sim City. The graffitti text entry is ok, I've picked it up, but I will be soon adding the "Halfkeyboard" after reading the reviews about the folding Targus model. Again, this decision was for portability. One bad thing: The battery does run down fast. I have to charge it every day, and sometimes more than that with heavy use. I have a easy travel charger, so it is not a big deal and it does charge fast. I am able to take this device in the field, jot down information and action items and keep everything organized. Later, I can work with this information anywhere without the awkwardness of a laptop. I am sold on the Palm OS, and I am very happy I chose the Handspring Prism because of the bright color display. It is a great device that is reliable and very powerful. I recently purchased the Blazer HTML browser, which is a very nice browser. I can access most sites, including my online resume. I was able to make changes and save it with no problems. I also spent a few days in the hospital recently (birth of 3rd child) and was pleased to find a strong signal in the room we were in. I probably spent 8-10 hours a day trying different web sites with no problems at all. No problems until my wife discovered what I was doing and decided it was tantamount to neglecting her...
Rating: Summary: To bulky. Review: I am going to keep my review short and to the point. Like the palm IIC this portable won't fit in you pocket. Its to bulky. You would be better buying a sony CLIE, or palm 505 before investing your money in the prism.
Rating: Summary: One Year, Still Satisfied (Now Two!) Review: I've had my Prism for nearly a year now. I use it every day. Add a Targus keyboard and an eyemodule, and you have an incredible little device. April 7-2002 I've now used my prism for about two years. It's the best.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: Bought the Prism today for Ms Word applications in grad school--heavy note taking basically. The Quick Reference Guide said to start with the START HERE card, but there wasn't one! There's no user guide, no numbers for tech support, and Ms Word is an add-on that will cost more. I tried to find the electronic user guide, and the Help section said it didn't exist. I now have a very expensive datebook. I did get a tech support number from the web, but it's a toll call! And the guy contradicted what someone told me in their sales and customer service department! By time I buy and add on everything I need (modem, Word, Palm AOL, keyboard), I'll be out a total of over $700. Skip this unit and buy a NEC or Jornada, the ones with a built in modem, keyboard, good screen, and Word plus AOL and other browsers. It's the same cost in the end, and the others are better, faster, and store more data. Oh, one good thing--the screen is nice, and the colors are great, but a datebook costs only a few bucks....One other thing-- I emailed their tech support people-- no word back. I'm unimpressed.
Rating: Summary: The Prism is it!!!! Review: I love my Visor Prism. It is fast and beautiful. I bought an Visor Slipper from E&B Cases in order to carry it around with me. the battery lasts a long time before I have to recharge it. Pros: The screen and the speed. I read reviews that stated that color pics are grainy. but this is not true. If the pic is grainy on your PC monitor it will look the same on your Visor Prism even if the pic is 16 bit. The pics that I took with a Olympus Digital Camera look fantastic on the Prism's display screen using alblum to go. The springboard modules available gives this handheld a big edge over the PocketPC. Which is one of the reasons that I bought the Prism. The Palm OS has so many hundreds of programs available . Windows CE only gives you a stripped version of Pocket Word and Excel, Internet Explorer and an Ebook reader and MP3 player. I can get all that and more with the Handspring Prism. Cons: I wish the my Prism had a louder internal speaker, but I know there will be modules developed to deal with this. I would look forward to a portable TV springboard module.
Rating: Summary: Beats my old IIIc by a mile! Review: My wife gave me a Visor Prism to replace my rapidly-dying Palm IIIc. (Which gave me good service, and she still has hers.) I am amazed - the speed difference is more than I expected, the screen is crisp (and *way* better than the Palm M505!), and there is that springboard slot to add stuff to... For those who complain about the size, get a life. Color is worth it. Overall, I am impressed. I will need to get a serial cradle to sync w/UNIX, but it hooked right to my Mac via USB and works like a charm. Plus (a big plus!) Handspring *does not* require your phone number to register the device online. A sign of a good company!
Rating: Summary: All I expected and more. Review: I ordered my Visor Prism directly from Handspring's online store, deciding that i would go all out and get the best product they offered. I chose Handspring over Palm due to the incredible expandability the Springboard slot offered. Out of box my Prism worked great. I've never held a palm pilot for more than a minute before i got this, and right away i was able to use every program on it. I truly believe we are getting to the point in technology where laptops are becoming obsolete. The Visor Prism, i have found through heavy research and personal preference, seems to be the best handheld out right now.
