Summary: Fatal Memory Error in the Visor Deluxe occurs frequently!!!
Review: I read all of the reviews on various websites and was convinced that the Handspring Visor Deluxe was the way to go. But within a month after purchasing the product online from the Handspring website and receiving it, a "Fatal Memory Error" occurred and all of my data was wiped out. There was no way to retrieve it. I spoke to the people at Handspring, who told me that there was a problem in the Visors produced between January and June of this year, but that they were working on a fix. They also told me that adding any Palm applications could cause the fatal memory error (I had not added any). They gave me the option of either holding on to my Visor and waiting for the fix, or exchanging it for a new one (one that was produced after June.) I opted for the new one. Within a month of receiving the new Visor, the same exact thing happened. I returned that Visor and purchased a Palm Vx. I've had the Vx for a few months now, and I absolutely love it. I've had NO problems with it, and don't expect to (especially not a memory loss!)

Summary: What a fantastic little machine!
Review: I must say, I'm like a kid in a candy store. I haven't been this excited about a piece of computer equipment in a LONG time! I bought a Handpring Visor last night and am thrilled with it.

The Visor is a fantastic and versatile little machine and I am so glad that I bought this one instead of a PalmPilot as an upgrade (my previous PDA was a PalmProfessional). The ability to add on modules was a fantastic addition to the PDA and, as I see it, the wave of the future. The module slot lets you add memory, a modem, a mini harddrive to store information, a pager and, I hear, now a cell phone! You can have it all in one little package!

Summary: Download the HandSpring Updater
Review: This message is being posted to comment on "Objective Review" by electronics fan from Westminster, Colorado. Actually I had the same problem with my Visor Deluxe. I had to constantly reset or resync my Visor deluxe when the batteries ran out of juice(which occurred every 2 to 3 weeks). The other problem I had was fatal errors. My system crashed on a consistent basis, and thus I had to perform soft resets often. After visiting Handsprings web site I determined that the problems I had might have been due to the "8mb Dramm" problem. It turns out that my Visor Deluxe was made between January 2000 and May 2000. Some of the Visors made during this time had defective memory chips. The defective memory chips make it difficult for the Visor to run smoothly particularly if you've used more than 70% of your memory(medical databases for Palm OS like Apothecarium, LexiDrugs, Epocrates, and 5 minute clinical counselor usually will take up 6.5 to 7 MB of memory). To fix this problem simply download the HS Updater from Handspring. The updater will check your Visor for this problem, and will install a "patch" program that will fix it. If you don't have this problem I recommend downloading it anyway because the updater also updates some of your other programs. The updater has fixed my problem, and I haven't had any crashes since. Also, my power is lasting longer. After you install the updater, and run the check it will tell you that there could be changes in power usage. I think that is why my batteries are lasting longer.

Summary: Wonderful piece of equipment for ANYONE
Review: I never thought I would get rid of my dayplanner... I bought a "blue" visor in March of 2000, and, since then I live, eat, breath, (it sleeps next to my bed). I use it in my car, everywhere. Memory is excellent at 8mb, added numerous apps, and today, I actually "sent" via infrared a document from my visor to an HP Printer. It took me less than 5 minutes to download the software (through a DSL line), install, and print. As an IS Manager, many employees in my company use the Palm - boy, do they have issues... Can't connect via Serial, etc , difficult to set-up, etc.,etc. My Visor was up and running in my office in under 15 minutes, and, at home, the same. I also purchased a keyboard from Lanware and it is great because it also allows you to hotsync when the Visor is on the keyboard; this way, the USB cradle that the Visor came with stays at home. I have the equivalent of Excel 97 and Word 97, in additon to a dbase app which reads and writes to Access97, and an auto expense tracker (on which I track two vehicles), and Pocket Quicken (which syncs with my Quicken 2000), plus other apps- all this, plus my OUTLOOK 98 notes, memos, to-do's tasks, emails, calendar, etc and I am using less than 3mb of space. I still have about 5.0 mb of space available for data or more apps. Overall I rate the VISOR a 5. This is an incredible product. I am buying two more for the holidays - one for my spouse, a teacher, and one for one of my kids who is in college and using a paper (daytimer) scheduler. I can't wait!! Again, this unit is worth every dime -- especially when I am sitting in traffic, writing, or reading and responding to email I downloaded just before leaving my office. I don't even carry my laptop anymore as I travel between my company's two locations. My next purchase will be the modem for my Visor.

Summary: One of the Best
Review: I had a Palm Vx for a time and loved the huge amount of space it affored me. It broke and I was quickly out $400. I really wanted to replace it with another, but found the cost prohibitive.

Looking at the PalmIIIxe was quick and painful. Am I the only one who really does not like the slight brown/bronze tint to the LCD? Anyway, it didn't thrill me, and most of my friends with PIII's complained a lot about things like the contrast wheel and assorted minor problems.

I looked at the Visor early on, but kept hearing about shipping problems. These kept me from ordering it right away. By the time they hit the retail shops, I relented and bought one.

Wow.

The LCD is a nice, crisp unit. It rivals the Vx for clarity. It feels more solid in my hand than a IIIxe, and I think I am one of the few people who actually prefer the snap on/off cover that comes with the unit. With the cover on, I have little worry about slipping it in my pants pocket. Using a IIIx with a flip cover, I discovered that the lid would open just enough for something to work it's way under the cover and depress a button. This is *not* a problem with the Visor.

The Ice "colour" was also a neat little choice. The other colours are vibrant, but being a total geek about it, the Ice matches my Mac at home and my iBook on the road. That's another good point in the Visor's favour, it is the cheapest and easiest Mac-user Palm currently available. Right out of the box and into your USB port. No buying an extra adaptor or "Mac Pack" (still haven't forgiven Palm for that one)

I have yet to buy a springboard mod, but will be purchasing the backup mod ASAP (just too handy not to own) and perhaps the 8meg mod (tho a larger one would be nice) and (why not) an MP3 player for it. I have also recently read rumors of a springboard that will allow the Visor to accept other Smart Media cards. I am remaining hopeful.

Cons? Well, not having any flash RAM bothered me at first, but after seeing OS 3.5, and hearing the rumors that Palm will be charging for future upgrades, I don't feel so "helpless" being "locked in" to 3.1. I downloaded and installed the DRAM-issue patch with no problems at all, so in a sense, there are upgrade paths available. As a physical note of concern with the unit, I noticed that the screen had a more "spongy" feel to it than my Vx did. Something you get used to, but longtime Palm users will notice it right off the bat.

On top of all of this, their customer support is excellent. My two-year-old took my toy-like Visor Deluxe (perhaps another "con"), and tried to float it in some apple juice. Needless to say the unit was fried. Calling handspring and explaining the situation was painless and they agreed to ship me a free replacement unit. They have won my loyality.

I have recently read about new Visors on the horizon, a colour and a "Super Deluxe" model, and I cannot wait to see them. I forsee being a Handspring customer for a long time.

Summary: 8mb palm at a good price.
Review: I was using a palm vii before but I never had a use for the wireless service and I found the 2mb in it a little limiting. So I went off in a search for a good cheap palm with 8mb in it. And it seems like the handspring is a good match - I needed to use my new palm with an iMac, I don't know how many of you iMac users are out there, but if you get a palm you will need to shell out an extra 35 dollars or so for a serial to usb connector. The handspring came standard with a usb connector and the downloads are much faster than they were with the palm vii.

I really like the size of the handspring - I was surprised at how small it and convenient it was to carry around compared to the palm vii - have you ever seen those things? They're pretty bulky. Also, the stylus fits nice and snug inside the side of the visor - in the palm it kind of snaps in place, but it wears out after taking it out and putting it back in many times and the stylus ends up falling out.

A heads up for you iMac users out there - in the Hotsync manager be sure to turn of the local connection and leave only the usb connection checked. Otherwise the hotsync manager will interfere with your internal modem.

Oh, and it comes with datebook+ built in. This was an app i was considering shelling out money for. It really makes the datebook a lot easier to use.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with it so far - I've had it for a day now and it works just as expected. It has replaced my palm in every way and i have plenty of room now to store avantgo and ebooks to read on the go.

Summary: Handspring Visor Deluxe
Review: My first PDA was a Sharp Wizard, an attempt to replace an underused Daytimer. For 3 years or so, I loved the Hell out of that Wizard. It had a calendar, address book, to-do list, memo, storage files, and even an outliner, plus a little keyboard with remarkably good feel from its rubber keys. With considerable effort with an optional accessory, I could back it up on my PC, but it was so difficult I only did it 3-4 times in 3-4 years!

Then I played around with a Visor in my local office supply store. In the space of about 10 minutes at the store, I mastered the graffiti (inputting letters with a stylus), and the Wizard keyboard was suddenly a thing of the past. The Visor could do everything the Wiz could do, only easier, and the back-up...what a pleasure: With a USB port, about 5-10 sec! What I like: cool look (mine's Ice), nice feel, stylus, image clarity, alarm options, versatility, multiplicity of preferences and options, back-up, supporting software and shareware, ease of changing batteries. What I'd like to see: active-matrix display (color Palm is very good). Two suggestions for buyers: get an extended full-replacement warranty, and get the Fellowes WriteRight screen protectors.

I DO miss my Wiz...but only a little bit. It was a pioneer and had its place, just like Daytimer. The Visor is the next generation, and it's better, smaller, [much] more robust, less expensive, and has almost infinite expandability.

Summary: Blows the Palm away
Review: Let's get right to the point and list the only real problem with the Visor. Or at least with my Visor and it is the only reason I give the Visor 4 stars instead of 5. The stylus Visor provides is very low quality and you would be advised to purchase a different one. Other than that the Visor is excellent buy. You get 8mb of ram, unlimited expansion via the springboard port on the back and the stability of the Palm software. The springboard slot alone makes the purchase of the Visor a must for anyone looking for an organizer that you can upgrade. The main reason I chose the Visor was value for the money and it still cannot be beat.
