Summary: Handspring is just plain better
Review: We sell PDA's where I work, and I have customers who come back all the time to give me feedback on how they like their PDA's. The majority of the people who purchase a Visor absolutely love it. I, personally, own a Visor Deluxe. I feel that the Visor is the best PDA for the price. The price has dropped from around $250 in a month or so. My favorite feature (albeit small) is the cover. I'm not a big fan of the covers on the Palm 3 series. I like how the Visor's covers can be taken off completely. This also makes it better when buying a case. Because of the unique design, there is no need for any adhesive. It's hard to explain, you'd have to see it...but trust me, it's much easier.

Summary: Good Buy!
Review: The Handspring Visor Deluxe is a solid performer for the buck. I didn't really need anything too over the top in memory, however I did want a good range of capacity and performance. Nice.

Summary: HANDSPRING DELUX BEAT PALM IIIxe
Review: As an ardent user of several PALM III's, NOW USING A HANDSPRING VISOR DELUXE and it is GREAT. The display is brighter, the touch screen is clearer and harder (easier to write on) since I use grafitti 99% of the time. Have it loaded with the same programs as my palm, and they all work great. The switch was easy since my laptop held all of the data, and the HANDSPRING uses PALM v3.0 OS. Fast easy sync with USB (unlike PALMIII). Also use the modem module, which is easy to install, setup and use. HANDSPRING IS GREAT!!

Summary: Visor Deluxe Review
Review: I purchased my Visor just 5 months ago, and when it broke all of a sudden this week, I realized just how much I grew to love the thing.

This is the first problem I have ever had with it - the buttons stopped working. So I called Handspring and they are sending me a new one, and I should get it within three days. I would say that my only other beef with the Visor is that the screen is too easy to scratch (I put a little scratch in mine the first day I had it!), so I use WriteRight screen protectors which protect the screen, but makes it a little harder to see and write on.

All that aside, I use the Visor for word processing with WordSmith (www.bluenomad.com), store phone numbers, use the To Do list & calendar, and I downloaded lots of games to keep my husband occupied while waiting for a movie to start, or on long flights, etc. I am pleased with the performance of the Deluxe, and am even more happy with the large number of programs and accessories available.

I would suggest this PDA to anyone with no reservations... I just wish I could aford the Prism (color)! (that's the reason why it only got 4 stars)

Summary: Ignore the negative comments - this is a great product
Review: There seem to be two classes of Visor detractors, a small group who experienced a problematic, defective batch of PDA's (probably some of the original units from the first production run or two) and the majority whose expectations and treatment of their Visors are, to be polite, unreasonable.

This was my second PDA, after my Psion Siena died. The British Psion was a beautiful, user friendly little device with the panache of a Jaguar, but unfortunately, that car's lack of quality control as well. Despite having spent money on synch programs and long distance calls to tech support, it never did synchronize with my computer, much to my dismay when it died at age two, for totally unknown causes. I also attempted to download a dozen or more programs to it, but never could do that either.

In contrast, the Visor synchronizes beautifully with my computer and there are thousands of programs that require no more than a few mouse clicks to download (I suspect that this is the case with all Palm OS PDA's, though). A word of warning: 3Com's Palm HotSync software, provided by Handspring on the included cd rom, does not synch properly with all functions of Outlook, despite claims that it does. This may be a common problem with all Palm OS units (Palm, Sony, TG, etc...), but it is a pain to have to buy Intellisync or another third party product to do this job.

I was attracted to the Visor by its price and the Springboard module, but have yet to buy a Springboard product. I have no need for extra memory (yet) nor a modem, GPS unit, digital camera, etc.... However, if you do need a modem, the Springboard ones seem to be much more compact than the ones that attach to the Palms.

As for the naysayers, some may have had defective units. My PDA has functioned flawlessly, though, for 18 months. It has crashed a few times, but always when I tried to install new software that was problematic. Avoid these crashing problems by a)downloading only from sites like Handango and Palm HQ that give reader reviews and avoid those who have caused other's units to crash (this is primarily a software, not hardware issue); and b) purchase and install Backup Buddy, which will reinstall your entire Visor's contents after a hard crash with just a press of the button on the synching cradle.

Some people have complained about the durability of Visors - what nonsense! If you drop any PDA, regardless of brand, you will likely break it. Transport the unit in its (included in the box) padded leather wallet. Don't keep it in your back pocket and then sit down - it's not that hard of a concept, folks. Finally, you should buy an extended warranty that offers immediate product replacement if the PDA dies for reasons other than abuse. I got mine at Best Buy and they offer an inexpensive, practically hassle free replacement warranty. Isn't it worth taking out a little bit of insurance on a unit that will contain so much important information?

In summary, my Visor is a great tool, that I use at least 2-5 times per day. Most of the problems that others encountered result from their failure to take adequate care of their machines. Buy it - you won't regret it.

P.S. Don't bother with the upmarket Handsprings unless you need either color or the thinner case. Basic Handsprings are plenty fast enough and there is no conceivable need for extra processor speed on one of these sorts of units. Enjoy your new toys.

Summary: The best price/performance PDA
Review: This is my first PDA, but it won't be my last. It's the perfect starter PDA, and has all of the PALM functions people have come to know and love -- addresses, to-do lists, downloadable features like New York Times front page, CNN and Sports Illustrated. I've even put a free map of my county on my PDA from Mapopolis.com (a must if you haven't tried it! Streets are searchable). Also, make sure you add Vindigo, a city guide that gives restaurant and movie reviews.

The Handspring also has the best features for the money. It has a bigger screen than the m105 (which I returned after a week), expandability (which I have yet to use, although I long for the GPS attachment from Magellan -- maybe when it drops to $... on clearance?)

That said, I only give the Visor Deluxe four stars because it does have some significant shortcomings.

One is bulk. It's significantly larger than the Palm V, which is $... more, and also requires new batteries after about two weeks of relatively heavy usage. It still fits in my chest pocket, though. The Palm V has a lithium rechargeable, and the new Palm 500 has an even better battery, but why pay $... for what is still basically, at heart, an appointment calendar?

BTW, I am a newspaper reporter who previously had four Rolodexes on my desk. No longer. No longer do I misplace names, numbers, or dates. This thing has changed and organized my life in ways I didn't expect -- just ask my wife.

It's basically an extension of your brain -- now isn't that worth $...?

Summary: HIGH TECH JUNKIE LOVES NEW VISOR
Review: Just purchsed the VISOR DELUXE, previously used PALM IIIxe but had a MULTITUDE OF PROBLEMS WITH THE PALM RECENTLY. When I unboxed the VISOR I was surprised at the slightly heavier build. The screen is smoother and the processor seems faster than the IIIxe. The OS is the same as the Palm, so there is no learing curve. The USB sync actually works, the problems I had with the competitor. The soft tip stylus is great. Have had the HANDSPRING one day and love it.

Summary: Great for it's price!!
Review: The Handspring Visor Deluxe is totally cool! The main thing that made me buy this palm was the ability to "plug n' play" with many modules. That is the all time coolest feature. There is like a cell phone, mp3 player, bible (I have that in mine), wireless modem, and SOOOO many more! Visit ... to see a huge selection of them. The price it very good. It has a huge 8 mb of storage, so you proably won't run out of space. I've had mine for like 5 months and I've used like 400 kb :) This is the best organizer for it's price. I love mine. Hotsync'ing is a snap. I've never had much of a problem with it. I highly reccomend it.

Summary: Terrific Palm Technology
Review: I spent quite a bit of time researching palmspring's visor's versus the palm pilot's. The palmspring is without a doubt a better choice for price, options, and looks. The expandable slot is terrific for snap-on mp3 players, digital camera capabilities, gps, and much more. Among the available modules I'd reccomend the Good Technology MP3 player attachment and also the Good Technology portable battery pack for the avid MP3 fan. The visor is great for everything you need to do on the go, its also highly user friendly so that you don't have to spend hours trying to figure it out!! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THE VISOR DELUXE!! I hope you love it as much as I do!

Summary: Simply Outstanding.
Review: After successfully holding back from purchasing a PDA of any sort for the last 3 years (Sorry, Newton-Maniacs), I finally broke down and went for the Visor Handspring Deluxe Green. I'm here to tell ya, friends and neighbors... I have utterly no regrets. For this full-time university student AND full-time dotcom employee (yes, I live the monk's life), it's organizational perfection personified in silicon and transparent green plastic.

The unit itself is surprisingly light and sturdy, and appallingly easy to navigate. Within minutes I'd transferred the contents of my battered dayplanner into its address book... installation of the Handspring software onto my laptop was a snap, and synchronization via the cradle couldn't be easier: push the button, kids.

With outstanding software support from Handspring, as well as many third-party vendors, the Springboard cartidges, and my impending purchase of the nifty Good MP3 player, I can't think of a more positive tech purchase this side of my Casio wristwatch. Whether you're a college student, a soccer-mom, the CEO of a online dating company... you just CAN'T go wrong with the Handspring Visor Deluxe. And if you're cool like me, you'll get the green one.
