Summary: The Ultimate Palm-based PDA Now
Review: I have been nothing but 100% satisified with the Clie 760. To be honest, I was leaning heavily toward the Palm m505 until I decided to learn more about the Clie 760. The Clie 760 is quire simply the m505 with a better screen and an mp3 player. When the prices of the 760 became very close to the m505, my decision was made! Now I will be able to get all of the benefits of a great PDA, but will also have a walkman to travel with as well! The bundled software is excellent, the Clie 760 has Palm OS 4.1, and the color screen is second to none. I especially like the bundled feature that allows your Clie's memory stick to be shown as a removable drive in Windows Explorer. This makes transferring apps or mp3s to the sticks very easy. With the cheaper memory sticks available from companies like Lexar, there are no drawbacks. If I have to throw in one complaint, I would have liked to see more business-related bundled software. Getting Documents to Go (like the m505 bundles) would have been nice, but I am nothing but glad I took the time to check out and purchase the Clie 760!

Summary: Sony PEGN760C Clie Handheld
Review: I kind of fell upon this handheld while I was looking to upgrade my Palm V to a Palm M505. I had the worst time getting a look at an actual screen on the M505, so when I saw the Clie, all I can say is WOW. I have been a Palm fan since the beginning so this is a big step for me. I use all the normal business apps, but being a digital camera owner I found that the 760C's photo applications were great, along with a 128mb Memory stick, I now have a way to show off all my newest pics without having to spend the time to print them out. It is very easy to copy pictures movies and mp3's (yes it play music too) to the unit itself or to the memory stick (it shows up as a drive on your pc). Best purchase I've made yet. So long Palm, Hello Sony.

Summary: cool beans
Review: I love it. the mp3 is great, hot sync set-up took about three minutes to master, and the add-on software is nice and FUNCTIONAL. No calling sony, or anybody to walk me through hours of hassles and compatibility issues. In short- A BREEZE. The only thing that I hate about Clie-760 is the headphones. They blow. It's like sony didn't even test them, but just said "yeah whatever, they look cool". Another complaint besides the headphones is the availability of a cullular modem. The only sony PDA with a modem "adapter" is the Clie 320 which is horrible without a color display (you'll need a flashlight to read it)... Lastly, Sony should hermetically seal the display area, nothing is worse than staring at your new Clie to see dust particles that you can never remove underneath the touch pad. Seal the deal.

Summary: Almost perfect
Review: I love this PDA. It's quite a deal if you can get it less than $200. The high resolution color screen is perhaps the biggest selling point. Only the newest PDAs on the market, like the Palm Tungsten, can compare to it, and this model is 2 yrs older than them.

The MP3 function is very useful, but the 8MB card provided is insufficient for this purpose. I suggest buying a 128MB stick made by a third-party, like Lexar, for around $50-60.

Battery Life:

Since I bought my model refurbished, I don't know how the PDA would perform if it were new. I am suspicious about the battery life. Sony promises something like 10hrs of performance with the screen off for the mp3 player, but it's more like 5 in real life. What this means is that you only get 2-3 days of use off a full charge. I mean, this is plenty for me for day to day tasks. However, I hesistate to take it with me in a long flight or overseas because it's difficult to recharge. I wish it came with a removable, rechargable battery.

Construction:

The construction is really nice, but don't drop it. I dropped it from about 2-3 feet onto carpet and while it still works, the memory stick slot doesn't hold the card in. It uses spring action, so now to keep the card in, I put a piece of tape over the slot to secure the stick.

Its fairly sturdy, but after repeated use, the screen loses some accuracy. It's some sort of two layered plastic which can, over time, cause innacuracy in pointing at things. Graffiti works fine though. Just be sure to buy a protective cover. I didn't and now I have scratches in the grafitti writing area which is

Also, it looks metallic, but only the front plate is brushed aluminum. The backside is painted plastic.

Accessories:

The lack of accessories for Sony handhelds is a problem, so don't expect to upgrade it in any way. I would like a hardcase, but no one, except hobbyists, make them. Also, until very recently, there was no keyboard for the CLIE. The one they have now is a thumb keyboard and that's no good at all.

Summary: Sony Clie Upgrade 710c to 760c considerations...
Review: I purchased a Sony Clie PEGN710C in the summer of 2001. I was extremely impressed with the screen resolution and the mp3 player. This handheld has by far one the sleekest designs for PDA's. More recently, I was dismayed at the fact that my model was NOT compatible with my new Windows xp computer. This newer model (PEGN760C) is compatible. Additionally, it has better screen resolution and improved software.

Things to consider when purchasing this Clie.

1. You can buy the older model (PEGN710C) and have it upgraded by Sony -- this essentially "turns the older model into the newer one," so says a Sony Techie.

2. My Clie PEG710C has collected dust under the screen, as another reviewer has noted. This is quite annoying and unfortunate since the picture quality is so stunning. As of Feb. 17, 2002, I called Sony about this problem and they are sending me a box to mail the Clie back to them. They will then fix it free of charge (after much arguing over the merits of my warranty through an Ebay purchase). We'll see how this ordeal goes. This newer model improves on the problem (supposedly).

3. Note about mp3 player: You can only play songs encoded at 128 kilobytes/second. This means that if you're stealing a song off of bearshare, for instance, you may get it at 160 or 192kbs; once you play this song off the memory stick on your Clie, the device may very well crash (but not burn, pheewww). This is a bit of an annoyance, but you can always reencode a song at 128kbs and solve the problem.

Besides those issues, I do highly recommend this device over other PDA's. You will be the envy on the subway or at work--Beware of pickpocketers!

Summary: Leos review
Review: I recently purchased this unit and must I tell you that this is by far the best PDA I have ever owned. I had palm IIIc and compaq in the past. But as for size and convenience this is the one. Although I came very close to picking up compaq's new ipaq, I didn't feel like coughing up 600 + bucks on a bulkier unit. I am not worried about pocket word and excel that comes with compaq's Ipaq because I rather do those things on my Laptop. If you are looking for a superior (compact)organizer (trust me this is more than a organizer)that let you watch videos, pictures and a built in mp3 player, then go for this one. One complaint is Memory gate sticks can be very expensive. But you have some choices. Check with stores like best buy, circuit city etc..

Review: I was extremely dissapointed the price was too high but the quality was low.

Summary: Excellent PDA-MP3 player!
Review: I've had this PDA for about a week. here's my initial reactions

included stylus: is nice and heavy weight. not the wimpy kind that came with my old visor handspring. blue color on ends. smooth silver.

memory: buy a lexar 128 memory stick. so cool. so small. prices dropping. don't buy the MG unless you don't like to download music via a P2P service

included cover: flip top. bends back on itself. looks cool. a little annoying b/c you have to remember to take the stylus out before you flip the cover back.

sony leather slim case(pega-usc11): doesn't fit the pda very well and the fit is too snug to make me feel comfortable about it. the included flip cover is sufficient unless you want a sturdy case to make it bomb proof.

headphones: look very cool, but don't need to be so big. they're more of a design/advertising scheme. thank you sony for allowing the headphones to disconnect from the remote control enabling people to use whatever headphones they want through the standard headphone jack.

remote: very cool. has a mine stylus nub built in. useful.

sound: could use a bit more "oomph" in the volume department, but all in all it has excellent sound.

jog dial: so nice. customizable and very useful.

BACK BUTTON: this is one of the best features out there and I don't know why people don't demand it more. there is a small back button next to the jog dial. it is so convenient to be able to return to whatever program you were using before. navigation is so much easier.

battery: MP3 sucks battery, but not at a horrible rate. question: I believe you have to have the pda on to charge the battery. there is no indication otherwise. this seems kind of silly. it's great to charge directly into the pda. only downside of the rechargeable batts is you can't bring along extras when you know you'll be away from electricity.

screen: the color screen is magnificent. I'm waiting to receive screen protectors. There seems to be a screen protector built in, as there is a thing layer of plastic in front of the actual hard screen. this would be great if it was easily replaced, but who knows.

overall: this is a great PDA. color, MP3, expandability. the newest one with the flip top doesn't seem quite ready for prime time and the features don't seem to justify the cost and relative size of the PDA. I would buy the 760C before they go out of stock or are discontinued as sony pushes their two newest models.

caveat emptor: obsolescence has hit the PDA market with the sony clie.

Summary: The best PDA I've ever had
Review: I've owned a HP Jornada, Palm Vx, Palm IIIc and now the Sony Clie N760C. Obviously, one would hope that technology would make leaps and bounds regarding PDA functionality but wow! The Sony Clie just has no comparison to the all the others I've owned including the ones (Palm M505, i705) I checked out prior to purchasing the Clie:

Physical appearance:
i705 wins. The m505 is ugliest of the three while the i705 is pretty even with the built-in antenna, it's still very thin. The Clie is clean and chic in silver but thicker than the rest.

Screen:
Clie wins hands down. None of the Palm's 160x160 came close to the Clie's 320x320 resolution. Picture running out of color ink on your printer and you can imagine the dullness of the Palm's display side by side with the Clie.

Software:
Who cares? You can download anything you want and install them.

Extra benefits exlusive to the Clie:
- Built in MP3 player: Good sound, nice headphones, very impressive! A drawback is that you can't listen to music and use your PDA for any other purpose. Plus, it would be great if they made it a cell phone too, then I would only have to carry 1 device.
- Jog dial: Didn't use this much at first, but this dial gives me the ability to do almost everything I need to do with only 1 hand. Very convenient if you're on the phone.
- Media slot: This isn't exclusive to the Clie (the Palms have them too) but the cost of Sony's media stick is WAY cheaper than Palm's smart media card. You can buy 128MB Sony compatible media stick for [less than] compared to Palm's 64MB for... more!

I think the only thing the i705 has over the Clie is the i705 has a built in wireless modem (hence the built-in antenna) but unless you plan on subscribing to Palm's ISP, this is utterly worthless. Bottomline, I love my Clie!

Summary: Best PDA I've ever owned!
Review: I've owned Palms (and even Pocket PCs) almost as long as they've been around. I was very excited when I first saw a Palm in color...the Palm IIIc. Paid the price and got it home only to be disappointed with the look of the screen with the big pixels and the poor visibility outside. Tried an HP jornada for some time and loved the color, hated the OS. So went back to a plain Palm. Finally the Sony came out. Beautiful color AND high res! This was what I wanted!! And I've not been disappointed. Let's look at the pros of this device:

1. Excellent color screen indoors and out
2. Good MP3 player
3. Memory stick expansion so you can load tons of programs, songs, and now video too
4. Nice looking device
5. Good stylus
6. Excellent battery life
7. Decent buttons
8. Nice software bundle

Cons
1. Memory stick is proprietary and expensive (but Lexar sticks are fairly cheap)
2. Sony support not real great
3. Newer models available

Why should you choose this model over some newer ones? Well, you might be able to get a better price on it, and the battery life is unmatched by newer ones. If I were buying a new Palm. I probably would get a newer one. But I have yet to see a model that truly has convinced me to switch.
