Rating: Summary: Too dim Review: Although the resolution and gray scale are excellent, the unit was simply too dim for me. (The screen is also very reflective, which didn't help.) Furthermore, even though the advertisement shows 4 icons across by 6 icons high, neither I, nor the Sony telephone support rep, could figure out how to achieve that (my Palm shows 3 icons across by 4 icons high). I returned the item.
Rating: Summary: Sony likes everything their way Review: Sony's new line of PDAs only support USB. That's great at home, however at work I need to sync with a 9 pin. More flexability would have been nice.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, wonderful and lovely CLIE! Review: This is the thing I've always expected! High-Resolution, good design, small size, and cheap price.I've always wanted a CLIE but they were too expensive for me. So I took only 3~4 days to buy this SL-10. A friend of mine bought this with me together and he's very satisfied about this, too(He was a former Palm M100 user). I knew somebody complains about the screen, but for me to say, No problem! If you're wasting your time to make up your mind, go to the store you can see it. Perhaps, you'll come back home with Clie SL-10. ^^ Jamie Kim
Rating: Summary: Fatal flaw Review: Just want to underscore that the dim screen on this PDA ruins an otherwise innovative and well executed product. I bought this and returned it after using it for a couple of days. The screen was simply too difficult to read under most conditions. The lack of Macintosh support was also a glaring omission.
Rating: Summary: Good PDA....small font Review: I purchased this PDA but had to return it. It has a high resolution display. That is great but it makes some of the font sizes too small (for my eyes, at least). You can adust some of the font sizes but not the fonts, say, in the address book or the icon labels. Also it was just plain too hard to read in ordinary light. I compared it side to side to the Palm it was supposed to replace and it was harder to read than the Palm. You have to look at the screen just so. My eyes are older so if you are young it might not be a problem. When I could read my old Palm better than this Clie I sent it back.
Rating: Summary: Good for the Money but unusable with the default font Review: I've had the S10 now for a little ove a week. I got it as a replacement for my Palm Personal wich I had for 4 years. The display is much better than my Palm Personal and the Palm III series BUT! the default system font is unreadable. I did find a 3rd party upgrade at simple-palm.com which made it big enough to see but I shouldn't have to do this. This is still not a big bright screen like a color PDA either PalmOS or PocketPC OS. There are also some compatibility issue with some of my old programs, Launchpad didn't display right and my Manhattan Cross Street Finder caused a page fault of some kind. I also had problems with the Desktop App on2 of my older PC (bothof which had no trouble running the Palm 4.1 desktop fromPalm. On one the hotsync kept falling over and was never successful after 3-4 hours and going up 3 levels in Sony tech support they claimed I need a new BIOS upgrade for USB v1.1. On the other PC the setup program would just hang. It installed fine on my Dell laptop and all the machines have Win98 SE. In the end the display is better than other monocroms in this price range, I think you'd have to go color to get better. I like the samll size and though some might deride the flimsy flip cover "case" I like it and find that I use the Palm more becuase it is that much easier to get to. Still I only give it 3 stars because of the fonts and the compatibility issues.
Rating: Summary: loved it but left it Review: purchased this pda from amazon (and they are FANTASTIC with service!) and was happy with it, till i had to use it at my father-in-laws home, with very poor lighting. couldn't read the screen! i'm returning it and at this point am not at all sure what i'll use to replace it. probably pen and paper for awhile!
Rating: Summary: So far, so good Review: I've been happy with this handheld so far; I only need it to replace a bulky Filofax. If you have questions about the device, Sony's website has decent online customer service. Forget about trying to get someone on the phone, though. I had to use online support to figure out how to get the display to light up - you have to keep the on/off button pressed down. But it DOES illuminate!
Rating: Summary: Screen is Hard to See Review: Having had both a Palm III and the original Palm, I am disappointed in the SL10's screen. It is very hard to get the right combination of font size, screen contrast, and lighting just right. In the sunlight, or a well-lighted room, it's OK but still not great. I read this in other reviews, but underestimated the importance (I mean, sometimes you just cannot read it). I am also a little bit disappointed with the integration of the Memory Stick. You can move applications and data to the Memory Stick, or put pictures on it, but it's a very manual process. Pictures have to be in the "right" format, and as far as I can figure out, it will not read standard file types like JPEG or GIF... Sony provides several neat utilities for both the SL10 and for your PC's desktop. The DocumentsToGo and Word/ExcelToGo utilities are especially useful when you need access to Word and Excel documents from the handheld. The integration with other Sony products (laptop, digital camera) and the combination of the bundled software are hard to beat. You may want to see the screen in action before buying, however. In my case, because of the price, I can live with the screen.
Rating: Summary: Good PDA spoiled by very dim screen Review: This PDA is very well made, compact (so that you can carry it nicely in your pockets), stylish looking, crisp hi res screen and lots of software. But all that cannot redeem the achilles heel of this PDA. The screen is very dim and unless you have direct sunlight or light you cannot read it well. In practice I found that 30-40% of the time it was a pain to read it. And the back light is pretty bad and doesn't make much of a difference. Take my advice and skip it for now and wait for the next version SJ20 which is supposed to have much better screen and back light.
