Rating: Summary: Really bad backlighting Review: I'm really upset that my Pilot Personal (four years old) gave up the ghost. The new Palm III HotSynchs faster, but the backlight is REALLY bad. Unless it's DARK, you can't see anything with it on, and the unlit screen is nearly invisible. Oh, well, I guess this is progress.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for basics! Review: If you are looking for a basic handheld organizer, the Palm IIIe is worth considering. I have been using my Palm for the past few years, and it has never given me a problem. I'll admit that I probably don't use it to its full capabilities, but for everyday usage it is fine. The Palm IIIe is perfect for the basics: datebook, address book, lists and reminders. I also find it handy for reading e-books or playing strategy games. However, because the memory is not expandable, I'm not storing pictures, or huge databases, writing email or playing fast-action games. What I like best about my IIIe is that it runs on 2 AAA batteries. This means that I can take my Palm on long trips without having to worry about charging it in the base, like most newer models require. (I also use rechargable batteries, which helps keep down costs.) The plastic casing of the IIIe is light and durable. After three years of tossing it in my bag, it has no visible scratches. The same cannot be said for the metal casing on newer Palm models. Unlike the Palm m100 series or Zire, the screen size on a IIIe is the same size as that of a Palm V. The other two models have screens that are considerably smaller, and in my opinion, quite cramped. My only regret is that the Palm IIIe's cradle does not have a USB connection but a serial one. There are adapters on the market that will convert your serial plug into a USB one, though.

Rating: Summary: It Does The Job Review: It can keep track of almost everything. There are so many applications to choose from and you can use a great deal of them w/o sacrificing too much memory. I've had mine for a month and a half and still have not needed to change the bateries yet. All this plus it can play tetris, chess, & Asteroids. If you don't need too much memory this is a mighty fine unit!
Rating: Summary: WAIT!, Palm V is worth the upgrade Review: It's is only a touch smaller, but the Palm V is that much more portable. The IIIis still a little too bulky for the coat pocket (V is invisible in a sport coat) and therefore ends up not there when you need it. This kind of ubiquity and convenience is the key to its value. For me, the III and previous units never were fully adopted because they were ever so slightly to big. This may be less of an issue for women that universally carry either portfolios or handbags.
Rating: Summary: Worked great for 24 hours, then... Review: Let me first say that this is an incredible product for keeping organized as well as eliminating little slips of paper. That said, i will explain the simple reason behind my giving it a 1 star rating- i purchased the product through amazon and received it yesterday, and today it cracked. After reviewing the manual and calling 3com support, i was told only that the warranty does not cover physical damage to the unit AT ALL, and that i would have to pay $100 to get it fixed. So buyers beware when reviewing this product- its got a good OS, good tools, but in my experience it is quite obviously incredibly fragile.
Rating: Summary: Good value for an entry level PDA Review: My goal was to replace/combine my Day Timer and notebook PC. The CE PDAs have better handwriting recognition and displays but tend to be hard on batteries and cost 3 times more than the IIIe. I was a little concerned about the IIIe's 2MB RAM but 4500+ contacts, appointments, notes, expenses and e-mail took less than 1MB. Hot syncing to my ACT database took a little time to set up but now it's a five minute operation. Is it the best PDA on the market? Probably not, but it's still a lot of bang for the buck.
Rating: Summary: Truly Organized Review: Okay, first off, this little thing is hard to get your hands on. ... Anyway, the Palm IIIe is fantastic. I work in the "Internet Field" and needed something to organize all my meetings, numbers, memos, emails, and my LIFE. I don't need "satellite links" or "color screens". These things are nice, but until I get Jeff Bezo's job, (the head of AMAZON) I really can't afford to spend hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars on essentially the same thing. The Palm IIIe does EVERYTHING the higher models do, it just doesn't have the "flash" that comes with a higher price. It's fast. It's EASY to use. It's impressive to anyone when they first see it, and after they see it and "play" with it, they want one. After they learn the price, they GET one. The Palm IIIe is the most affordable and the wisest choice in PDAs. Trust me. Then again, you have no reason to trust me, I guess. You don't even know me. Nevertheless, one last word of advice...ordering this model online is difficult, as EVERYONE is getting one and Palm Inc. either can't or won't keep up with the demand. If you can find one locally, go for it. I called a couple places one morning (a couple days before Father's Day) and ONE place had TWO of them in stock. They had only gotten two the NIGHT before and by the time I got there, (a half hour later) there was only ONE left. Good luck, folks, in achieving mobility and organization, you may need it.

Rating: Summary: Software to sync with Outlook not included Review: The Chapure software that is included with other Palm Organizers to synchronize with MS Outlook is not included with this model and has to be bought at extra cost (~$45) from Chapura.
