Summary: Incredible price, worthless alarm and stylus.
Review: First of all, this the best deal for someone looking for a budget Palm (much better than the childish Palm Zire). I previously had a Sony Peg S-320. The alarm is an embarassment. I used to be able to make notes for things to do at home and stick my PDA in my book bag and when I'd get home I'd still hear it in the bag, but now it's impossible to hear. There is no excuse for that. The stylus top is unscrewed/stripped etc. already, but I'm obviously not going to send it back for that. The flip screen is much more secure than previous Sony's. I'm very disappointed in the inability to hook a Targus mini-keyboard at the bottom. Sony sells some ridiculous keyboard with a cable. This is a big turn off for me as I am constantly throughout the day writing down long notes or facts (Stocks and politics, world events; I keep alot of info. in it, but writing 4-5 sentences would be much better with a keyboard. I don't get excited about color, but the extra [money] may be worth it to you. CAUTION, I have had numerous problems getting this unit to Sync with both XP Home and Pro. I've downloaded and installed all the drivers. This is unacceptable, so be warned. Size is nice, backlight is great in typical Sony fashion. Bottom line: Nothing better for [the price] but much room for improvement.

Summary: OK for the money
Review: I purchased this unit to give my more expensive Cassiopeia a break. I especially like the size (very compact), and that like my Casio unit, it is rechargeable.
There is also more software available for the Palm OS, than for the Win. CE.
So far, I'm very happy with it, and hope that reliability is as good as the other Sony products.

The connector does seem to be a little flimsy, so we'll see how it holds up.

Summary: Good device BUT write pad and pen low quality !!
Review: At present, I own a Sony SL10, and I'm planning to buy a SJ22 or SJ20 or SJ30 (I'm not sure about whether I need color, perhaps to show digital pictures, but the battery drain is 3-4 times higher I heard : you can hold the device 4 days instead of 2weeks with a B/W device). BTW, I'm an active user of PDA : nearly 1hour a day for appointments, contacts, notes taking, scientific calculator, financial calculator, dictionnaries, CIA factbook world encyclopedy, image viewers, avantgo newspapers (in the train or bus its excellent : with the jogdial, you can even read it standing up !), excel viewing, pdf viewing, maps download, mails....

The problem of Sony devices (compared to palm m515) are as follows : quite slow (the palm m515 can make an entire search in 2-5 seconds, the sony needs twice as much time)- while they have the same Dragonball vz 33Mhz. Screen refresh is 2 times slower (it's not a big problem, but its really noticeable), but thats explained by the resolution.

My real concern is about the pen and write pad : I have my sl10 for 2 months only and the write pad becomes a real mess : I had to stick a plastic film on it, but it doesn't 100% resolve my problem. Perhaps this is because the pen is too small, too "design" (palm pens are much better and the write pad of palm's is a dream when you write fast !).

Also, 16MB is a must (EVEN WITH A 64mB MEMORY STICK) when you want to use dictionnaries on your palm. With 8Mb, you will need a lot of optimizations every time (docs to go requires already 600KB just for install, mails : 500K, forget the dictionaries : dictionnaries : 2-8MB). It's quite a big problem after some time.
Also remember : a lot of programs cannot acces the memory stick and the memory stick is much slower (2-5 times slower acces)

So the dilemn is here :
Get a Sony (SJ20 or SJ22) for the style, the hi-res screen and the jog dial.

Get a palm (Vx, m500,m505 or m515) for the very good writepad and pen (trust me, this is very important for heave PDA users), for the fact it's very fast and perhaps for the more common (and cheaper) SD-cards.

I'm really concerned by my SL-10 writepad problem, and as the SJ22 seem to have the same writepad/pen, its a big trouble for me.

Summary: Great little device
Review: I decided to buy a Clie to upgrade from my old Handspring Visor. A good decision, my familiarity with Palm software made getting aquainted to this model a breeze. It has a rechargeable battery, backlit screen, a wheel to scroll through different pages and is generally well laid out, compact and lightweight.
I chose a monochrome model because that suits my needs, a color model would make a real nice xmas gift (just dreaming)and would be well worth the extra money.
Sony have really made a great little PDA here and I most certainly recommend it.

Summary: Disappointed -- Particularly by Sony Customer Service
Review: I purchased the next step up -- basically, the same PDA only with a color screen (the PEGSJ-30). I was very excited about it and purchased additional accessories and software.

Although I didn't have much trouble syncing it with two computers (both with Windows 98 SE -- Suggestion: be sure that you have upgraded to the most recent version of the Palm syncing software -- 4 something), I have found after less than two months that it is not responding well at times to the provided pointer pen at various area of the screen or in the graffiti area. For example, when I am trying to click to get the internal keyboard to appear, I often have to tap from 3 to 7 times before it shows. This can be very frustrating!

My experience with Sony customer service was not unlike a previous reviewer. The issue involved a minor purchase off of what appeared to be their website. I hoped that a supervisor could assist in remedying the situation, but was very disappointed. I found the experience so unpleasant that I haven't contacted them since and would seriously hesitate to buy from them again.

I was very disappointed and I am now considering other alternative products offered by Amazon.

Summary: Nice little item
Review: I bought one of these a couple of months ago - so I can't attest to the durability of these units yet.

But - I can say that the SJ-20 makes a perfect little portable ebook reader - the screen is sharp with nice backlighting, and I really like the little jog wheel for one-handed operation. Nice design.

I charge the batteries when I'm not using it - and have never had the battery run out on me.

I do have problems with synchronization sometimes. You really have to make sure that everything is firmly and tightly connected, otherwise things seem to hang occasionally.

I don't like the direction Sony is going with the SJ-33. The hard flip-top seems annoying. I prefer the soft flip cover of the SJ-20. So pick up an SJ-20 before Sony starts messing too much with the design.

Summary: DON'T DO IT
Review: My experience is completely different from the other reviewers. My SJ20 worked out at first, long enough to waste all my time inputing data. Then I tried to synchronize with a second computer - I was trying to combine personal and business information from the two computers onto the Clie. The Clie doesn't work on two computers, Barry at Sony support says that it may work on two, but Sony won't help you figure out how to do that. That is three hours later - I purchased this because of the reviews saying Palm support wasn't so good, but Sony's was. Not true - at least not in this case - talked to two different Sony technicians - they were kind of jerks and really didn't care. I don't care about the Clie - if it don't work for my purposes, I will return it - what I care about is the havoc Sony technicians unleashed on my computers in an attempt to get the Clie to work - following their directions, my computer has been trashed. I have spent hours on this ordeal and now have much more work to do to reinstall and reconfigure my computer and uninstall the clie software. On top of it all, I have lost all of my data - well, actually the data does exist on the computer I put it on, but now the Clie doesn't sync with it and Sony won't help. I have had bad experience with Sony products a decade ago, but thought things had changed - guess not. No thanks. Should have listened to my friends, all of whom have older Palms - but are very happy with them. I read these reviews and thought that maybe things had changed and that the Clie is better than the Palm. It is amazing how advanced some of this technology is, but it can't sync with two computers - that doesn't sound like an unreasonable expectation.

Summary: Excellent for the $
Review: I've had this unit for over a month now. Of course its price dropped quite a bit since I got it. Oh well, this is good news for those who are buing it now. The unit works extremely well with PCs. And it works just as well with OSX!!! Just use Palm desktop software (free from Palm) I also bought the music adapter and Lexar 128 meg memory sticks. Now this is where it becomes tricky. The adapter works extremely well; good sound quality, reliable, good on batteries. I updated to Audioplayer 2.2. I used the version for T605 model. It works like it should. I installed Filez, and installed the Audioplayer the usual way to the Clie, not to the Memory Stick as the instructions recommend. The player comes with Real Jukebox that does not work on Mac. So I bought The Missing Sync to use with iTunes on Mac's OSX. But I found out that it does not do that much in addition to regular Palm features in OSX. First, iTunes produces much larger MP3 files than RealJukebox with no improvement in sound quality. Second, the files when transfered via the Missing Sync do not play properly on Clie. So this was a waste of money.
Going back to the Clie: I am impressed by the price and functionality of this machine. I honestly do not see any point in spending several hundred more on their NX series at the moment since it has the same 16mb of memory, and the memory stick is still limited to 128mb (about 4 hours of music). For the price I'd expect them to have at least 1/2gig. If the color display is not a must than SJ20 is really hard to beat.

Summary: Proved, no colors needed
Review: I made a good choice: "good price + no color display + documents to go + 320x320 display + memory stick port".
I miss in this clie: An "easier to press" on/off buton. A better version of Documents to Go, I can not see charts or graphics: but I can edit Word and Excel perfectly. Could be also nice to have a mail software that allow to read attachments.
The batteries are good. The quality for images is impresive.. gray scale but I really don't need colors: I have my notebook for this and my friends can receive my pictures by mail or by ofoto.
16Mb is perfect. I also use a 8Mb memorystick (is empty). From my digital camera I can move pictures to the clie.
Now I use my clie instead of my notebook for meetings, I can edit Word documents, update my outlook contacts, tasks and send mails.

Summary: practically perfect
Review: I got my clie sj20 a few days ago,and i coundn't be much happier with it. The only discenable flaw is that it lacks color, which signifigantly limits your game selection. However, the white back light is very easy on the eyes, which is an advantage over the rival palm m125.
Since the clie works on the palm operating system, it's easy to communicate with palms. I would recomend this product to anyone unless color is essential to them. P.S.- If the i.r. beam doesnt work at first, try doing a hard reset.(insert the stylus into the reset area while holding down the power button.)
