Summary: Great buy despite the high price
Review: I was initially leery about buying the Tungsten due to the mechanics of owning a device that slid open and closed. However reviews I've seen say Palm put the unit through a 100,000 open/close test which would equate to opening and closing the unit 3 times per hour for six years, with no problems. I only use my PDAs for about a year or two anyway before upgrading.

The unit is solid. Sliding mechanism is solidly made. Color is brilliant with good definition. The voice memo feature is wonderful. It can be used with the unit closed and then on hotsynch it synchs your voice memos as .wav files to your hard drive so you can send them as email attachments if you like.

The processor is fast, definition is great.

There are only a few qualms I have with the Tungsten:

1. Palm left out a fully charged two-color indicator light. It would have been easy enough for them to include on this model. It charges in about 2 hours but it would be nice to have the LED change color to indicate a full charge.

2. I also feel there is room to work on in the voice memo area in terms of file labeling configuration. It names your voice files random numbers so it is hard to determine which is which when sending them.

3. It does not come with a case, only a clear plastic snap-on cover which is awkward to take on and off. Hopefully someone will come out with a hard case for the unit.

All in all however, a great unit. My buy was between the Tungsten and the Sony Clie NX series. I chose the Tungsten because I do not need my PDA to take photos and listen to MP3s. If I wanted to listen to MP3s I would buy an iPOD from Apple and not a Clie. As a productivity tool for business, the Tungsten is great and very compact. It's a good buy despite the high price tag.

Summary: Didn't think I'd like this but my old Handspring had to go
Review: For the longest time I wasn't sure why I'd ever need to upgrade to another model of PALM -- after all they each have essentially the same user interface.

The New Palm Tungsten is better than the older models that I've owned (Handspring, Palm V) in several ways:

1. Bright color screen - very readable EVEN in sunlight
2. Nice circular dial to select icons. I thought this would be a gimmick and get in the way of my using the device -- but it actually is my favorite feature. I can use it to one-hand select the different icons on the screen or tick off a to-do item. VERY handy.
3. Fast processor - even those most of teh Palm applications are very efficient - the new speedier processor is very noticeable when navigating.
4. Solid metal case
5. Compact "slider" design.

Overall I am very pleased with this new Palm model and think that it represents a very good value for anyone who relies on their PDA on a daily basis. I would love to see some apps written specifically for the new Palm 5 OS that ships with the Tungsten. I'm sure those apps will be out shortly.

Summary: Nice, But Longevity Not Good
Review: I use this primarily with my ACT! database. Have never even come close to using the maximum memory even with hundreds of contacts and extensive notes. It has served me well for about 2 years; however now the standard plastic screen cover is hard to read through and the machine "resets" itself or locks up requiring a manual "reset" about once per week. For the purchase price I would have expected a much better life to it.

Summary: Annoying digitization problem
Review: Although I was happy initially with my Tungsten T, I am no longer happy because it needs to be redigitized several times a day. I am a teacher and use it for a lot of data entry, calculation, and organizing and it is time consuming and aggravating to have to double-check all the time to ensure that the correct item is going in the correct field. I was dismayed to discover within these reviews that this is a glitch that is endemic to all model T's. I am even more upset to discover that it eventually just breaks! At the price I paid, I expected to get several years of use out of it. I am hesitant to replace a defective product with a product from the same company, especially if Palm is not backing up their product with a meaningful solution (as is reported elsewhere in these reviews).

Summary: Worked well for a while
Review: Initially I loved my Tungsten T, but after 6 months, the touch screen began requiring repeated recalibration. This has become progressively worse, to the point that recalibrating or repeatedly soft rebooting does not help and the T has died. This all occurred after the warranty period, and the online knowledge base and phone support have been worse than useless. After reading customer feedback here, it appears that several other people have experienced the same problems with the T and the same frustration with Palm support. I'm now shopping for a (non-Palm) replacement. I would strongly discourage anyone from buying what appears to be a flawed product from annon-supportive company.

Summary: Terrible touchscreen
Review: I bought this model (not at Amazon) and I can say that those devices are very, very useful. I use this model for college (read texts) and to listen MP3s. However, it just became practically unusable after almost 5 months of use (3 months warranty).

So, what happened? Something that I see over and over again on Palm PDAs: the screen fails to recognize where you are pointing the "pen" (called stylus, right?). At the beggining, it was misaligning more frequently. So, I was aligning the screen more and more on the third month, but nothing that I should call a hassle. Then, the worst happened: with more or less 100 days (right after the warranty expired), it started to get extremely worse, like I need to align 2 or 3 times a day. Well, after some days, even the align process wouldn't work anymore...

At least it's still "usable" to read texts and listen to MP3s, but anything that requires lots of input can't be done. Funny that I've seen the same problem on the internet, and a friend bought a Tungsten E and exactly the _same_ problem happened, and on the _same_ period of time. I don't need to say that Palm support was like a "robot" for me and for my friend, automated humans that only says what you already know... I know lots of people at the college, and I can say that I made lots and lots of people don't buy a Palm. I will alert everyone not for the problem, because problems happen (even if this problem seems to happen a lot), but a crappy support is unaceptable.

It was the first and last Palm product I bought.

Summary: This is an "OEM" product !
Review: To anyone I led astray w/my original review - I apologize. When I wrote it I loved the Tungsten T. There are better quality PDAs out now that are comparable in price to Tungsten T.

It still has good qualities: a good screen, good maneuverability and good processing speed.

What it doesn't have is good support. Around month 10, I started having issues with a shift in the keyboard. Type 'k' and you get a 'j'. First it was only w/the right side of the keyboard....then the left. Then it switched: Type 'j' and you'd get a 'k'. Completely screwed up.

The odd thing is - I ended up getting used to typing that way.

Redigitizing helped for short periods of time. Maybe 1/2 a day. But always it would go back to being f***ed up. The Palm site had a patch that worked for about 10 minutes. Reading on-line, this was not just my problem - but fairly wide-spread.

Palm was of NO HELP. I had no 3rd party software loaded onto my Tungsten - so that wasn't the issue. To have Palm "fix" it - I'd have to send it in, which was a difficult option. Try to fix it yourself and you violate the warranty.

I ended up buying a new PDA (which I'll review after a sufficient amount of time in using) and giving my Tungsten way to someone whom was going to attempt troubleshooting.
