Summary: 14 months and still going strong
Review: I received my Visor Handspring Delux for Christmas 1999. I have never had any problems with it, it has always been completely reliable.

I have the USB cradle to sync at home, and I purchased a Serial cradle to sync on the NT system at work. I use outlook for my e-mail, contacts and appointments and found that all of these features have been easy to configure.

When I received the Handspring I also received a backup module (sold separately) which I keep in the expansion port. I use it out of habit, but I don't think it's really necessary unless you need to go for a long period of time without being able to sync.

My only complaint is that it is sometimes far to easy to hit the calculator button when attempting to use the scroll bar to scroll down on the right side of the screen.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with Handspring's product(s) and support and am looking forward to upgrading to a prism within the next 6 months.

Summary: Orange Handspring Is the Best
Review: I had a Palm III before purchasing the Handspring Visor Deluxe. I am glad I made the switch to the Handspring! I like the Orange color; it makes it a lot more interesting than the ugly gray Palm. While it is almost as thick as the Palm III, I'm used to the feel of it so the weight of it doesn't bother me. Also, having 8 MB is nice on the Visor, compared to the measly 2 MB on the Palm. It is a shame that the OS isn't upgradable, but I'm sure I'll live with that. I don't have to have the latest software as soon as it comes out, like many techno-geeks do.

All in all, it's a great product. I haven't bought any of the modules; I'm hoping they'll go down in price this year -- mainly the MP3 modules.

Summary: This is a really great product
Review: The Visor Deluxe is a great buy in my opinion. I have had it for well over 6 months now and I have had no problems with it. It has not locked up (requiring a reset of any kind), my PC works great with it, and it has really organized my daily activities.

I'll admit, I was skeptical because it didn't have flash memory meaning I could not upgrade to newer operating software when it is released. But, if you are an average consumer, all the applications you'll need are readily available and can run with the existing software included. Not to mention that if you're into the future of PDAs, then you will most likely upgrade your WHOLE PDA because future applications will requre faster processors (something you can't upgrade easily). So for the typical person that either works in an office or a working parent or for college students and such, this is a great product. I am personally not worried about the actual type of memory it has (although I would recommend the 8 MB of memory over the 2 MB).

I've had a Palm IIIxe before and they are roughly the same thing as far as what they do. The springboard modules are the one thing that made me buy the Visor though because this also helps with future expansion. More and more developers are using the expansion port to create programs and hopefully this will give the consumer more choices. For now though, I am very pleased with it.

Summary: Stock up on batteries!
Review: I received the Handspring Visor Deluxe as a birthday gift. It was the best! I loved the convenience of being able to have all of my calendars and to-dos in one place. The only bad thing about it was the battery life. I used the alarm notifications that you can set with Outlook and they transfer over to the Visor when you sync up. This is great in the respect that you are notified when you have an appointment, but it majorly drains the batteries. Also, the power button gets easily depressed when it is in a purse or other tight area, even when it is in a case. This, of course, also drains the batteries. After much thought, I decided that I could not change batteries every 2 weeks. Therefore, I returned the item and am thinking about buying the Palm Vx. That unit has a recharger and I have heard a lot of good things about it. Hope this is helpful for anyone looking at buying this unit. It's great and colorful and VERY useful, just watch your batteries!

Summary: Everything that I expected, but...
Review: Been using the Visor for a month now, and it has been everything that I hoped it would be. My only complain is that she's (yes, it's a girl. Any problem with that ;-) a battery guzzler!!! I received my visor on the 2nd. of February and I had to change batteries last thursday the 15th.! Let's hope that these last a bit longer. Maybe it was just me playing a lot with her, otherwise, these little babies were born to rock!

Summary: Makes life much easier...
Review: I've had my Visor Deluxe for over 2 months now and it is hands down one of the best investments I have made. I use it for everything going on in my life: appointments, writing down quick notes, contacts, play games, etc. If you're still wondering if you should get the 2MB or 8MB version, defintely go with the 8MB. The contacts and appoinments don't take up too much space but once you see what applications are out there, you're going to wish you had spent the money for 6 extra MB. I've got AvantGo and Liberty (I know the Visor wasn't meant to play Gameboy games, but it sure is a great time killer) in mine and still have enough memory to add much more (currently have 89% of the memory free). I also expected the batteries to drain quickly but using it for the past 2 months a few times a day has only wasted about a quarter of the battery life. It's just great having all this info in one place and being able to carry it where ever you go.

Summary: The best PDA for the money
Review: Why would I recommend Visor Deluxe above others? The springboard modules of course. These modules give the Visor a flexibility which none of the other pdas have. With the modules you can use the visor as a GPS, MP3 Player, a voice recorder, a digital camera and now with the visorphone module as a mobile phone!! With the right modules th Visor would surely do whatever you want it to do. Even without the modules it would really simplify most of everyday jobs. With an IR mobile phone you can browse the web, check e-mails and send SMS (which is way easier than with a mobile phones keypad). And of course it has all the usual PDA stuff to make life easier. Datebook, memo, address book, etc. The Visor Deluxe uses Palm operating software so it has really lots of software. 8 mb ram is enough for 99% of the users, synchronising with a desktop is really easy. One downside of the Visor Deluxe is the service outside US. In most countries the parts are sold for about twice the price than US. (A replacement screen for $175 in Turkey opposed to $85 in US)

Summary: Good for what I need
Review: I recently purchased a Handspring Visor Deluxe. The only real differentiation from the one pictured is that it is a translucent blue color, but it's specs and functions are still exactly similar. I bought this originally just as something that I could use to play games on (there are hundreds of games out there-from Dreadling, a FPS game, to iRouge, a dungeon and dragons type of game; all for free) and to possibly store my address and such on. I gave it four stars for exactly two reasons. First of all, the price is a little high. For me, at least...I can't imagine that it's too high for some businessmen who make a six figure salary, but I don't make that much...It was kind've a leisure item. Secondly, the compatibily for wireless internet is horrendus. I'm anxiously awaiting a visor with wireless internet capabitlities, unfortunately that would involve selling my current one and replacing it with a more expensive one. A wireless internet springboard is available, from what I know. I haven't gotten the chance to test it out yet. I have found my Handspring Visor to be a wonderful addition into my life. I keep lots of books on it: 1984, The Hacker Crackdown, etc, etc. With the eight megs of memory, even I have not succeeded in filling it up to full capacity yet. I would definitely insist that 2 megs of memory is really not enough for someone who is going to use this device day in and day out. On the box they say something like, with the 2 megs you can store 140000 address or something. Sure, that's great-but it also means you can't put in more things that you want, such as document readers and games. One particular downside that I've notised with my handspring (this may affect some of you, I'm not quite sure) is the fact that it doesn't seem to be IR compatible with the Palm Pilot handhelds. This means that the small infrared port on the side can't transmit data, etc, to palm pilots-only to other handsprings. On the whole, I would defnitely recommend this device to anyone with enough money to afford it. It's on the pricey side, but is well worth it if you're willing to take the time to learn it's fucntions and uses (this will take about a week to pick up the handwriting technique used for it).

Summary: O/S not upgradable
Review: I got a Handspring because it was cool. It has the card-slot (springboard), which is a little limited in what has actually come out for it, but it's a good design.

The deluxe model has 8MB, and this was a good price for an 8mb palm-pilot with an upgrade slot, plus, cool colors.

With the non-deluxe model, this is dropped to 2MB. It's only purpose in life was to be a cheaper replacement for the Palm III and earlier.

Then I realized the problem. The O/S is in ROM, not FLASH. The O/S on these are Palm v3.1, which is about a year old. THERE IS NO UPGRADE PATH TO PALM O/S 3.5! To upgrade, you have to buy a whole new one.

Even if you could, you'd have to wait for handspring's version.

I recommend the Palm-IIIxe, it's the same thing, minus the springboard module (only REALLY useful for a few things, which are easily worked around). Palm 3xe has 8mb, and FLASH ROM, plus it comes with Palm O/S 3.5 and is upgradable. If you NEED the cellphone or wireless option, there are sleeves that fit over the pilot that do this.
